Advisory Board Meeting Minutes Friday, November 13, 2015 9:11am-10:18am Attendees: Dr. Gene Hilton, Jessica Jaramillo, Dr. Julius Manz, Betty Onik, Sylvia Ortega, Linda Parks, Sherry Paxson, Chuck Schumacher, and Ruby Woodard I. II. III. Introductions Dr. Manz started off the meeting by welcoming the Advisory Board Members and thanking them for attending today’s meeting. The members introduced themselves. Advisory Board Updates Dr. Manz informed the members that Becky Miller has resigned from the Advisory Board. If anyone knows of anyone, please send their names and contact information to Dr. Manz. Sherry mentioned that Myra Rutledge and LaShawna Dodd had expressed an interest. She will contact them. Program Highlights CE Program-Radiology Course o Sherry spoke about the Continuing Education Radiology Course that she taught during the month of October. There were 16 students registered. The students needed to complete modules online and come in to the clinic for a lab session. All 16 completed the lab, 8 completed the lab and modules in the time frame allowed. A few students have registered for the DANB test, but have not taken it yet. Sherry will follow up with these students to see how they did. Sherry may offer another course like this during the spring semester. SAHDA CE Fundraiser o Sherry said there were 37 people who attended the “Healthy Strategies to Avoid Workplace Tragedy” CE on November 10th. SADHA raised about $1,500.00. We plan on having another CE fundraiser in the Spring. Changes to our Acceptance Criteria o Dr. Manz went over the changes to our Acceptance Criteria. Below is the percentage breakdown. College GPA (Last 24 Academic Credit Hours) 15% Prerequisite Course GPA 22% General Education Course GPA 15% ACT Exam 15% Previous Dental Experience 1% 1 Professional Program Success 10% New Mexico Residency 5% Advanced Degree Up to 2% Essay 15% Class of 2016 o Betty spoke about the Class of 2016. Table Clinics-All the students did a great job. Jessie and Brooke received; Best Researched, Best Presentation, and Best Overall. Kim and Elana received; Best Use of Media and People’s Choice. Community Rotations-The rotations are going good and the students get a practical learning experience. Honors Service Learning-There has been an Honor Service Learning Section added to all the second year courses. Boards-Three students have taken the written Local Anesthesia Board. Betty is still waiting to hear about National Boards from the Class of 2015. Dr. Schumacher asked what test students prefer, WREB or CREDTS. Betty responded that it depends on the time, money, and location of the tests. Rotations for Spring Semester-The students will be going to Life Care, Public Schools, and Head Start. They might go to Dental Offices or Native American Clinics. Betty received some feedback from the members that are Dentists on how they feel last year’s Dental Office rotations went. Mission of Mercy-Students might attend this year. Give Kids A Smile-Students will attend. Class of 2017 o Sherry spoke about the Class of 2017. Class of 2017-There are 12 students. Some are former Assistants. Mission of Mercy-Students will attend. Give Kids A Smile-Students will attend. Adjuncts o Dr. Manz informed the group of three new adjuncts that will be teaching for us during the Spring Semester. Allison Cahoon-Clinic, Board Review, Principles of Practice, and Practicum Kathy Jo Golden Myers-Clinic Dr. Bruce Volkerding-Clinic Equipment Update o Dr. Manz said there are no big changes. The Clinic has a digital PANO Machine and an Intra-Oral Camera. Dr. Manz is hoping to get rid of the Processor and film. o Dr. Manz mentioned that the Program implemented Perio. and Dental Charting on the computer. 2 IV. V. VI. Miscellaneous Linda asked for an update on the Common Core Curriculum. Dr. Manz responded that San Juan College implemented certificates that students can get that are health related. As part of this, The Dental Program has opened Tooth Morphology up for all students. Future Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) o Dr. Robison, a Prosthodontist will be the CE speaker for GKAS on Friday, February 5, 2016. Mission of Mercy (MOM) o New Mexico Mission of Mercy will be April 7th-10th, 2016 in Santa Fe, NM. Accreditation o The Dental Program’s Accreditation Site Visit will be June 7th-8th, 2017. Conclusions Dr. Manz concluded the meeting by again thanking everyone for attending and expressed how much he appreciates the support of the community and the college. 3 Advisory Board Meeting Minutes Friday, April 17, 2015 9:06am-10:22am Attendees: Dr. Gene Hilton, Dr. Ron Johnson, Michelle Tensay, Patricia Dixon, Sylvia Ortega, Dr. Julius Manz, Sherry Paxson, Elizabeth Onik, & Ruby Woodard I. II. Introductions Dr. Manz started off the meeting by welcoming the Advisory Board Members and thanking them for attending today’s meeting. Program Highlights Class of 2015 o Betty spoke about the senior class attending the NM Mission of Mercy (MOM) this year and last year. She was really impressed with all the students. o Betty mentioned that we saw about 45 children for Give Kids A Smile this year. It was a great event. o Dr. Manz applauded Betty for doing an excellent job with the Honors Service Learning projects. Ten out of the eleven senior class students will graduate with Honors. All students are planning to walk in Graduation, which is Saturday, May 9th at 8am. Our Pinning Ceremony will be in the Zia on Friday, May 8th starting at 7pm. o Betty said the students did a great job with Table Clinics. She heard good comments from the dental community that attended. Some of the members mentioned they learned valuable information and the topics were relevant. o Betty spoke about the Community Rotations the students visited during the semester. They included Head Start, Life Care, Public Schools, and Dental Offices. Betty had the students submit a reflection paper after each rotation. Dr. Manz would like to have DZ back on the rotation. Sherry said the Indian Health Service (IHS), nationwide are not letting students come in because they are short staffed. o Betty informed the members that two of our senior students took the Central Regional Dental Testing Services (CRDTS) exam and passed with a 93%. The other nine students are planning to take the Western Regional Examining Board (WREB) exam. The students are getting registered for the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE) and plan to take it in 1 June. About half the students have taken their Local Anesthesia Boards and have passed. Dr. Johnson asked if the students attended the National Meeting. Dr. Manz said no, the timing is not good and travel is expensive. Class of 2016 o Sherry said the junior students attended Scientific Session and Mission of Mercy this year. Sylvia (junior student) shared with the members that MOM was an eye opener for her, because they have only worked on each other. She said it was fun and there was hands on learning. The junior students helped with Sterilization, Hygiene, and Patient Education. They also watched extractions being done. o Sherry mentioned that the gifted students from Esperanza Elementary School visited the clinic. The juniors and some senior students helped teach the younger students about hygiene and showed them how to make impressions of their thumbs. Sherry received letters from the Esperanza students and their teacher saying they loved coming to visit the clinic and it was a great learning experience. One of the members asked if the Dental Station was still at the Children’s Museum. Betty said yes, she will be contacting the staff there to see what’s going on with it. Class of 2017 o The Class of 2017 has been selected and letters have been mailed out. Dr. Manz said we have applicants from all over. One applicant from Alamogordo, three from Farmington, two from Cortez, one from La Mesa, one from Albuquerque, one from Aztec, two from Durango, one from San Diego. New Adjuncts o Dr. Manz updated the members of our new Dean and Adjuncts. Dr. Teddy Farias, is the Dean of Health Sciences. Brooke Hoopes, RDH is teaching in the clinic. Allison Cahoon, RDH is teaching in the clinic, Principles of Practice, and Life Care. Brad Moon will be teaching Pharmacology in the fall. Dr. Bruce Volkerding and Kathy Jo will be teaching in the clinic during the fall semester. Equipment Update o Dr. Manz said we have a new digital PANO in the clinic. It is fully digital, but students will still learn traditional. Miscellaneous o Sherry updated the members about the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB) prep-course for Radiology. Sherry and Julie will be taking the online exam soon. They are both registered, just waiting for an exam date. Sherry has a skeleton built now. It is a six week course. She is hoping to launch it in the fall. o Sherry, Betty, and Georgia attended the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) conference this year in Boston. Sherry and Betty shared some stories of what they learned. One in particular was about InterProfessional Collaboration, being a part of the medical community. Our 2 students met with the nursing students and gave them oral bed side instructions. They would like to work with OTA next. Future o The students are hosting a Continuing Education (CE) Fundraiser on Thursday, April 30th at 6pm in the Zia Room. o San Juan College will be having an Open House on Thursday, May 14 th from 4pm-8pm in the Health and Human Performance Center. This event is open to the community. o The Annual Staff Retreat will be a painting session. Ruby is working on getting the date scheduled for some time in June. o The next NM MOM will be in Santa Fe, NM at the Santa Fe Convention Center. It is scheduled for April 7th-10th, 2016.
