15 MONTH TRACK STARTS EACH MAY WHY CONSIDER A BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING (BSN)? • Hospitals, visiting nurse services and other health care settings prefer, or even require, nurses to have completed a Bachelor’s Degree • A BSN provides a comprehensive background and more complete program in nursing • Graduate work in nursing requires the foundation of a BSN degree • The American Nurses Association, The National League for Nursing, and The American Association of Colleges of Nursing support the BSN as the entry point for professional nursing WHAT SPECIAL OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE AT UA? • • • • • • • • • Students begin clinical experience in the first semester of the nursing major. Clinical settings will provide interaction with individuals from birth to old age, families, groups and whole communities. Faculty members strive to create an academic environment of learning experiences tailored to meet each student’s needs. Senior Nursing Practicum pairs students with a professional nurse preceptor in a health care setting selected by the student. Cooperative Education Program in Nursing provides relevancy to the world of work and allows students to earn income while completing their degree program. Students can take leadership roles in the Collegiate Nursing Club, Ohio Student Nurse Association, Minority Student Nurse Association, and the Graduate Nursing Student Organization. The Accelerated Option is four semesters beginning in the summer semester. Admission occurs at summer semester only. Students will progress through the curriculum taking the courses as they appear on the program plan and complete the program in August of the next year with a baccalaureate degree in nursing. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS • • • • • • • • • • • • Prospect Record Form (Application to the Program itself, available on the website) Two letters of recommendation Resume A 500-word Personal Statement addressing how you can contribute to the field of nursing Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited four year college or university Cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale Completion of the prerequisite courses prior to beginning the first nursing course Prerequisite science courses completed within five years of application to the program. Science courses must have a lab component. Full time status Admission to The University of Akron – students previously enrolled at The University of Akron must complete an InterCollege Transfer (ICT) to the College of Health Professions. Prerequisite science courses must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Important note: Completion of all admission criteria does not guarantee admission to the accelerated program. Admission Procedures Submit the Prospect Record form along with copies of your transcripts to the School of Nursing, attention Accelerated Option. You will receive a written evaluation (Planning Sheet) of the prerequisites you have completed along with those that need to be completed. From this point forward, you must maintain close contact with the Accelerated Option office in order to ensure proper progression towards entry into the program and to confirm continued interest for consideration for admission. International students should contact the Office of International Programs for admission. If you have attended The University of Akron in the past, you may need to reactivate your file by contacting the Office of Admissions. Prerequisite Courses: The following list of prerequisite courses are offered at The University of Akron and Wayne College Campus, as well as Medina County University Center (MCUC). Prerequisites may be completed at any regionally accredited university or community college. However, to ensure transfer of credits, you are strongly advised to submit a course description prior to registering for approval from the Coordinator/Advisor.
