Upon Acceptance to The University of Akron, students will participate in an orientation program and meet with an advisor. Students wishing to pursue a nursing major will be admitted and advised as follows: Direct Admit/Pre-Nursing Students directly admitted to the School of Nursing will be advised through the Office of Student Affairs while completing the prerequisite courses. Direct Admission to the School of Nursing DOES NOT mean direct admission into the nursing major. The criteria for direct admission are: New High School Graduate (within two years): • 3.00 high school GPA • 22 ACT or 1030 SAT • Complete core curriculum (Algebra, Geometry, Biology, and Chemistry) Transfer Student: • 3.00 cumulative college GPA • Minimum of 24 semester hours of prior college courses from • an accredited college or university. Post-Baccalaureate Students: • Minimum baccalaureate GPA of 3.00 from an accredited • college or university Admission Requirements for the Nursing Major University of Akron students apply through their Academic Adviser during a specified period of spring semester to be considered for fall admission into the nursing major. Students must meet the minimum criteria listed below and are separated into categories for admission consideration. Minimum Requirements: • • • • Full Admission Category: All School of Nursing Pre-nursing students as of the first day of spring semester and Intended Nursing Majors still in University College are prioritized by science GPA. 2.75 Prerequisite GPA (All prerequisites must be completed by the end of spring semester. 2.75 Prerequisite Science GPA (Intro to General, Organic, & Biochemistry I and II lecture/lab and Anatomy & Physiology I and II lecture/lab)—ranking in each admission category will be by science GPA. No grade less than a “C” in any prerequisite course (grades of “C-“ must be repeated; see repeat policy below) Important note: Completion of all admission criteria does not guarantee admission into the nursing major. Entry is competitive. Admission Consideration Categories • • Priority Admission Category: Prenursing students, who were admitted or transferred to the school before the first day of spring semester, are prioritized by science GPA. (Army ROTC scholarship holders are guaranteed placement in the major.) Full Admission Category: All School of Nursing Pre-nursing students as of the first day of spring semester, any Priority Category students who have repeated a prerequisite science and Intended Nursing Majors still in University College are prioritized by science GPA. Repeat Policy • If School of Nursing Pre-nursing students or University College Intended Nursing majors do not successfully complete science prerequisite courses the first time, they are allowed to repeat the course for a change of grade one time only.
