It is already 25 years since EIASM embarked on an exciting doctoral adventure known as EDEN. The EIASM’s European Doctoral Education Network (EDEN) – its successful Doctoral Seminar programme – has been a very valuable asset for European doctoral students in Management, and you’ve been part of it as a student/alumnus and/or as a professor. To celebrate this important occasion, EIASM is organising a 25th EDEN Anniversary Symposium on September 28‐29, 2014. The event will take place at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels, Belgium, where the EIASM offices are located. This Symposium will be held jointly with the 2nd EIASM Forum on Research Quality – fruitfully bringing together EDEN alumni and professors, as well as Academic Council (AC) school representatives (mainly Deans and Research Deans). The conveners of this special combined event will be Chris Chapman, Imperial College and EIASM Board member (as well as EDEN Professor), and Willem Buijink, Tilburg University and EIASM's recently‐appointed Academic Director. The theme of the event is "Doctoral Training in Management Research: The Next 25 Years". Seven distinguished speakers from the EDEN alumni, and EDEN professors past and present, in 7 main areas – namely: Accounting, Finance, Industrial Organisation, International Business, Management, Marketing, and Operations Management – will share their ideas about the Anniversary and Forum theme, via 7 intensive, short yet profound, TED talk format lectures. Co‐chairpersons: Dana B. Minbaeva (Copenhagen Business School, Denmark), Michael Segalla (HEC Paris, France) and Bruno Staffelbach (University of Zurich, Switzerland). Local Chairpersons : Soufyane Frimousse (IAE, Corse), Jean‐Marie Peretti (IAE, Corse). After an introduction by the workshop chairs, 36 scholars from 28 universities of 17 countries presented and discussed their research in 6 sessions, grouped in the following topics: ‐ Reshaping, challenging and strategizing HRM ‐ Rewards, motives and expectations ‐ Culture and HRM ‐ Labour markets and industry ‐ Information, knowledge and learning ‐ New challenges. The focus of the research presented lied on context and practices of HRM, addressed HR‐professionals and actors, and was studied from the perspective of western countries. For next year, an expansion of the topics in the following direction is encouraged: ‐ HRM as a supportive function enabling line managers ‐ HRM in a context of underemployment, 3rd world issues ‐ Focus not only on actors but also on victims – the dark side of HRM. The presentations at the workshop revealed that different stakeholders have different theories because they have other purposes and constraints. Thus, theory‐building is bound to the interests of decision makers. Yet, scholars may even more emphasize on: ‐ Using multiple different theories ‐ Be critical in working with theories ‐ Testing the theories in the reality of management and employment relations. The Workshop on Strategic Human Resource Management was once more a platform to meet and discuss with scholars from HRM. The diversity of topics and methods was striking and made the presentation sessions interesting and informative. The sessions have always been well attended, despite the stunning location around the conference center. The dates and location of the 30th edition of the workshop will be announced soon. Report on the 6th Workshop on Coopetition Strategy The 6th EIASM Workshop on Coopetition Strategy took place in Umeå, Sweden, on May 21‐23, 2014. Co‐chairpersons: Wojciech Czakon (University of Katowice, Poland), Giovanni Battista Dagnino (University of Catania, Italy) and Frédéric Le Roy (University of Montpellier and GSCM‐Montpellier Business School, France) Scientific committee: Maria Bengtsson (Umeå University),Håkan Boter (Umeå University), Devi R. Gnyawali (Pamplin College of Business Virginia Tech), Sören Kock (Hanken School of Economics), Malin Näsholm (Umeå School of Business and Economics) and Paavo Ritala (Lappeenranta University of Technology) A doctoral tutorial was organized for the first time prior the workshop. 11 PhD students presented and discussed their thesis proposal. Devi Gnyawali and Sören Kock held a seminar on “What to expect from a doctoral dissertation in the coopetition realm and how to do it. After an introduction by Giovanni Battista Dagnino, the initiator of the workshop, and Lars Hassel, the dean of Umeå School of Business and Economics, 56 scholars from 11 countries presented and discussed their research in 12 sessions, grouped in topics like: ‐ Coopetition and innovation ‐ Tension in coopetition ‐ Coopetition and marketing ‐ Leadership, culture and coopetition ‐ Standards and coopetition The research presented at the sessions covered many different dimensions of coopetition spanning from the individual level to the network level. It covered areas related to coopetition as strategy and practice in the context of sustainability, internationalization, innovation and leadership to mention a few areas. Three keynote speakers have given their views on coopetition at the conference. Jonas Åkeson (director Strategic sourcing at Ericsson AB) and Jukka Rantala (Business development director, Nokia Research Center) gave their view on the role of coopetition in their practices. Next, Eero Vaara (Hanken School of Economics) gave a speech on practice‐based perspectives in management studies. The Workshop on Coopetition Strategy was furthermore a forum for scholars within the coopetition field to meet and discuss current research and future directions for the field.
