Title III Fast Forward, Native American Student Profile
Title III, Part F Grant, Fast Forward Program
Accelerating AA/AS Degree and Certificate Completion for Native American Students
In September 2011, San Juan College was awarded a U.S. Department of Education Title III Part F
grant for a single Native American Serving Non-Tribal Institution (NASNTI) activity to identify and
develop strategies that support Native American student academic progress, degree completion,
and increase transfer success.
Purpose
The purpose of this Native American Student Profile is to gain a better understanding of the needs of Native American
students at San Juan College regarding their education experience and success. This profile taps into that experience
quantitatively. The objective of providing this profile to SJC personnel and the community is the expectation that it will be
used in designing instructional programs and allocating resources in future institutional planning.
Methodology
In collaboration with the SJC Office of Institutional Research and the SJC Native American Center, student data regarding
Native American students were collected and analyzed. Adherence to FERPA standards and the Association of Institutional
Research Code of Ethics were followed in the publication of this profile.
Data was extracted from the SJC student information system. Data illustrating unduplicated headcounts refer only to annual
fall terms (FA) over 9 academic years (AY). Unduplicated headcount data is limited to the fall term because a students’
identifying demographic can change from term to term. For example, 17 year old student A may enrolled full time in the fall
term but be 18 years old and be enrolled part time in the spring term. Data exploring only fall terms is a more accurate
snapshot of the Native American student body on campus.
Enrollments, student credit hours, and completion/success rates are represented over an entire academic year (AY) for 9
years because enrollments and student credits hours cannot change over the course of an academic year. Identifying
demographic of Student A may change from fall to spring terms but the number of courses and student credit hours enrolled
remains unchanged, therefore this data is illustrated over an entire academic year.
Native American Students
To best meet the needs of SJC’s Native American students’ academic success, the Fast Forward Program opted to include in
this profile all the students who self-identified as American Indian/Alaskan Native and were entered into the student
information system.
Therefore, quantitative data in this profile will differ slightly from data reported by the SJC Office of Institutional Research
which reports data regarding Native American students in compliance with the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data
System (IPEDS) and the New Mexico Higher Education Department (HED).

Title III Fast Forward, Native American Student Profile 3
Introduction
San Juan College is located in Farmington, New Mexico in a largely, rural, sparsely-populated, isolated corner of
northwest New Mexico. San Juan College is a public, two-year, degree-granting institution offering 124 programs,
leading to associate degrees and certificates. It draws students from throughout the Four Corners region, which
extends into Utah, Colorado, and Arizona. Several Native American tribal lands are located nearby.
The nearest New Mexico public four-year institution of higher education is located 183 miles from Farmington, in
Albuquerque, NM. The nearest four-year institution is Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado.
San Juan College’s close proximity to many Native American communities has made San Juan College the 4th highest
ranked two-year institution for awarding Associate Degrees to Native American students.

Unduplicated Headcount
The chart below illustrates the unduplicated headcount of Native American students at SJC who were enrolled in at
least one credit course. The data is based on each annual fall term at San Juan College over the last 9 academic years
(AY).
In Fall 2014, there were 3,008 self-identified Native American students attending SJC. The number of Native
Americans attending SJC decreased by 7% from the Fall 2013 term.

Unduplicated Headcount
The charts/tables below display the unduplicated headcount of Native American student at SJC disaggregated by gender,
age, and full/part time status. Data is based on each annual fall term (FA) over the last 9 academic years (AY).
In Fall 2014, Native American students between 18-24 years old accounted for 40% of the total unduplicated headcount
at SJC and in that same term, the majority (53%) of Native American students attending were part-time students

Enrollment and student Credit hours
The graphs below illustrated total enrollments and total student credit hours for each academic year for all Native
American students at San Juan College over the last 9 academic years. Each graph also displays the year-to-year percent
change. Enrollments in hybrid and audited courses were excluded due to insignificance.
In 2014-15, there were a total of 17,167 enrollments and 54,868 student credits hours taken by the Native American
student body at SJC. Both enrollments and student credits hours decreased by 5-6% compared to the 2013-14 academic
year.

Enrollments receiving an A, B, C, or S grade are considered “Passing” and are deemed successful.
Enrollments who did not withdraw, remained until the end of the course/semester, and earned an A,B, C, D, F, S, U, or X grade are considered “Completed” and reflect the
retention rate of Native Americans at SJC.
Enrollments remaining after course census are significant because a grade of A, B, C, S, D, F, U, X, W, AW, I, RR maybe reflected on an official transcript and thus
retention, completion, and success rates can be calculated.
The graph above illustrates the retention, completion, and success rates of all Native American enrollments at San Juan College by academic year for the last four years. The
graph depicts enrollments after course census which is the date after which a student receives no tuition reimbursement if s/he drops a course. Enrollments that remained
after census, received a letter grade reflected on an official transcript.

Passing Rates of Native Enrollments in Online Instruction
*Enrollments from the Center for Student Engagement and hybrid style instruction methods were excluded due to insignificance.
For example, in AY 2014-15, 60% of all enrollments in the School of Science, utilizing a face-to-face, lecture style instruction method received a passing grade. Since AY2012
-13, passing rate in the School of Science, by face-to-face instruction rose 2%.
The following reflects passing rates of Native American students at SJC for the last 3 academic years. Passing rates by school are disaggregated by online or lecture style
instruction method. These rates are calculated based on total enrollments receiving a “passing” A, B, C, or S grade.
