Assigned Projects

Group project description Part of your course grade (20%) will depend on successful completion of a group project. These projects must be done in groups of 3‐4 people. The project will consist of each group designing and carrying out a factorial experiment. Your project will be graded based on the components listed in the table below. Due Date Format Component Points Email—fill in doc provided—see instructions on Project proposal 5 Sept 13 fill‐in‐doc Bring 5 hard copies to class: one for me, four for Experimental Protocol 5 Oct 4 classmates to peer review Oct 18 Submit hard copy in class—format provided Peer Review 5 Email—specifics TBA Submit data 5 Nov 8 Dec 1 Email—format provided Report 80 For any component submitted late, 2 points from that component will be deducted for each day it is late, including non‐class days and weekend days. You could wind up getting 0 for a component, but I will not grade the following components if you have not turned in the previous ones. That means that even if you get a zero on a component, you must do it and turn it in. Pick a subject that interests you and plan, conduct and analyze the results of a two factor experiment intended to increase your understanding of the subject. Each factor must have at least two levels; one factor must have more than two. You must have a numeric response variable. You must use some type of blocking variable to show you understand what one is. The requirements here involve genuine experimentation. A completely observational study or an analysis of data collected by someone else will not be acceptable. This project may not be based on a laboratory exercise (being) completed for another class, unless you can convince your instructor that you were responsible for the planning and execution of the exercise. This project need not be expensive, nor require a huge time investment in data collection. It does need to show careful planning, good logic and the use of data collection and analysis concepts discussed in the course. You should plan for 2‐4 hours of data collection. Final approval of the project idea is at the instructor’s discretion. Projects involving alcohol, firearms (including ‘tater guns’), illegal activities, anything deemed UNSAFE by the instructor will not be allowed. Also, projects involving experimentation on human or animal subjects will not be allowed. If you think your idea has safety issues, tell me so in the proposal, and tell me how you will protect yourself. I will probably ask you to get a subject‐area advisor to sign off that you are planning to take appropriate precautions.
