Downloading JMP: To get JMP, go to http://www.ncsu.edu/software/available‐ software/product.php?software=209 Scroll to “How to Get This Software” and click on “Instructions for Acquiring SAS Institute, Inc. Products” Click on the “Software@NC State” Fill in the Requester Information, and scroll down to JMP 9.0 Pro (for whatever type of computer you have.) Click on “Get it Now” Follow the three steps to get JMP 9.0 Pro Entering Data: Go to “File” “New” “Data Table” This brings up a new data table, and you can enter in data in the first column. You can also change the column title and other properties of the data by right‐clicking the header and typing the new column title. You can also left‐click the header and change other properties of the data when you do not have a continuous variable. Type in the Transformed Grades which you also used for your calculator exercises. Making a Histogram/Box Plot: With your newly created dataset, you will create a histogram. Below is a screenshot of what you might see. This box will pop up after clicking on Click the distribution tool the distribution tool. This is the original data table. After you have the distribution table up, select the first column (in this case “Transformed Grades”) and put it in the required box next to the “Y, Columns.” Then click OK. After you click OK, you should see something like the following: This gives a histogram of the distribution, a box plot, the quantiles (which includes a 5‐ number summary), and the mean, standard deviation, etc. To change the bin width, click the red triangle next to your variable name and then click on “Histogram Options” and “Set bin width.” Play with the different options you can change. For example, figure out how to make the histogram appear in the horizontal format you are more accustomed to. When you do your projects, and when you do work in the “real world,” you will need to output graphs or summary statistics to a word file to include in your report. The following directions show you how to do this. Outputting graphs/statistics into a word document: For the previous example, look at the screenshot of the histogram. Directly above the “Distributions” tab is a thin blue bar. If you put the mouse on top of that bar, the “File,” “Edit,” etc. tab appears. Click on “Edit” and then “Copy.” Then in your word document you will be able to paste it in. For this example, you should see the following when you paste it in the document: Distributions Transformed Grades Quantiles 100.0% 99.5% 97.5% 90.0% 75.0% 50.0% 25.0% 10.0% 2.5% 0.5% 0.0% maximum quartile median quartile minimum 96 96 96 92 87.25 83.5 71 61.5 59 59 59 Moments Mean Std Dev Std Err Mean Upper 95% Mean Lower 95% Mean N 79.428571 10.682223 2.8549442 85.596303 73.260839 14 For your assignment to hand in, redo this display in horizontal format, output it to a word file, and describe the distribution of transformed grades using the various features you learned to describe in your prerequisite course. I am holding you accountable for knowing what you should be telling me about. See Devore Chapter 1 and Section 1.2 for help. Print this file out and hand it in to show you have completed this exercise.
