2016 Travel Study Proposal Instructions
Congratulations on your decision to organize a travel study experience. Helping students experience the vast world
beyond the comfort of their hometown is truly one of the most powerful ways of impacting their lives. San Juan College is
committed to helping you create an organized and profound experience. The first step is filling out this proposal.
Please complete and return the following application materials by
your records.
April 10, 2015 while retaining copies for
Proposal Materials
Your application will not be reviewed by the Global Studies Committee unless it has all of the following materials:
 Travel Study Proposal Form [including signatures of travel study leaders and dean(s)]
 Preliminary Budget
o Include the major travel expenses such as airline tickets, hotels, food, entry fees, etc.
o Use the Preliminary Budget Generator Excel spreadsheet.
o See the sample page 4.
 Draft Course Guide/Description
o Provide the course title, description, outcomes, and assessment methods.
o List what materials the students will use.
o See the sample on page 5.
 Tentative Itinerary
o List when and where you plan on going.
o See the sample on page 6.
 Letter of Support from Department Chair/Program Director/Lead Instructor
o Letter should confirm support of the program by the department’s faculty, describe how the program
fulfills a need in the department, and articulate the appropriateness of the program’s location to the
topic.

Proposal Guidelines
 Two leaders are required for each travel study. One must be a full time employee of the college. Travel
study leaders’ travel costs are covered by the students and factored into the Budget Generator
spreadsheet.
 Destinations can be anywhere in the world that do not have US State Department Travel Advisories. The
college reserves the right to revoke approval of a destination- at any time- based on political events, safety
considerations, or other factors.
 Destinations must have academic merit and be connected to course outcomes. Your Dean must agree that
the course meets the academic rigor for your School, so please gain their approval before
submitting a proposal.
 If two courses are offered with the travel study, please consider making them a Learning Community.
Compensation may be available for course planning, team teaching, and other Learning Community duties.

*You are providing preliminary information to the Global Studies Committee. Details of the travel study can be changed in
the future based on the Committee’s feedback and discussions with the Global Studies Coordinator.

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS
Both travel study leaders must participate in all required workshops and travel study meetings
during the academic year prior to travel in order to fully participate in planning and publicity.
Travel study leaders and students may be required to participate in a college presentation or
general public activity upon return.
Travel study leaders should be aware that planning and leading a travel study program is timeintensive and requires substantial communication with Office of Global Studies and other
offices on and off campus.

ENGL 299- Writing About People and Place: Japan
3 Credits – Summer 2008

GOALS:
This course is designed to give students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in an entirely
new and alien environment while honing the art of transferring all their wonder, thoughts, and
impressions onto the written page. Students will study the art of creative writing (both non-fiction
and fiction) and its components such as observation, journaling, and interviewing. In addition,
students will study the writing of both indigenous authors as well as “outsiders" to Japan.
OBJECTIVES & OUTCOMES:





Expose students to the wonder and marvels of modern, as well as historical, Japan.
Engage students in works from Japanese authors writing about their own country and people.
Engage students in works from “outsiders” who write about Japan.
Study the process of creative writing about place and people.
Produce original creative works that stem from experiences on the trip.

ASSESSMENT METHODS & COURSE REQUIREMENTS:




Students will be required to attend all planned day trips, attend daily discussion sessions, and
read the required materials. Included in this is a mandatory 1.5 day classroom experience the
week before we depart. 40% of final grade.
Students will be required to make DAILY entries into their three part journal. 10% of grade.
Write a 3-5 page synthesis paper on 2 or more of the course readings. 25% of grade.
Submit a 10 page creative writing portfolio that stems from the trip. This can contain writing done
in Japan (journal entries, poems, etc), stories, reflections upon your return, etc. 25% of grade.
SAMPLE PROPOSAL ITINERARY: JAPAN
Overview:
Tokyo/Osaka- World famous megalopolises where neon outshines the sun.
Kyoto- Spiritual, cultural, and ancestral capital of Japan.
Hiroshima- Home to an unforgettable Peace Park memorializing one of only two places on earth
where atomic weapons were actually used against mankind.
Day 1-2 (could be 3 days based on flight logistics)
Travel Albuquerque to Tokyo/Osaka. Spend night in Tokyo/Osaka.
Day 3
Take shikansen (the bullet train) from Tokyo/Osaka to Kyoto. We’ll cover 320 miles in 2 hrs 20 min.
How fast is that?
Day 4-6
Kyoto




Spend a day and night with the Shingon Buddhist monks at Chishaku-in Temple.
Experience Gion, the bustling entertainment hub of the city and tradition home of the Geisha. Setting
for the book & movie Memoirs of a Geisha.
Visit several of the over 1,000 Buddhist temples and Shinto Shrines that pepper the city. Many are
centuries old and have earned recognition by the United Nations as World Heritage sites.
Nijo-jō. The castle of the greatest Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and also a UN World Heritage site.
Day 7
Take shinkansen from Kyoto to Hiroshima (1 hr 45 min)
Day 8
Hiroshima



Peace Memorial Museum & Park. The most haunting and emotionally potent museum I’ve ever
experienced.
A-Bomb Dome. The mangled shell of the only building that remained after the atomic blast.
Experience Toukasan, a 400 year old festival to celebrate summer. Also known at the “Yukata
Festival” because the colorful outfits everyone dons.
Day 9
Take shinkansen from Hiroshima to Tokyo/Osaka(4 hrs).
Day 10-11
Tokyo/Osaka

To be honest, I have no idea what we’re going to do yet, but it’s going to be an adventure. Guaranteed.

Return Home

All nights are in basic hotels, double occupancy, usually with 2 twin beds. You can choose who you
want to room with.
