Twenty-five per cent of law students at the University of Waikato are Māori.
At Te Piringa-Faculty of Law, we teach the law with reference to the bicultural
nature of New Zealand society and within the context of the Treaty of
Waitangi. Students can learn about Māori Tikanga law and practice.

We work hard to ensure our students succeed in their studies. Staff are
supportive and there is a Māori mentoring service and a Māori Law Students
Association. Te Piringa-Faculty of Law at Waikato is home to the Centre for
Maori and Indigenous Governance which has been established to research
issues of governance, rights and responsibilities concerning Maori and
indigenous peoples.
Direct Entry
Te Pringa-Faculty of Law accepts about 250 students each year. Students are
offered a place after their applications have been considered by the Admissions
Committee. There is no intermediate year, so once you’re in, you’re in for the
rest of the degree.

Te Tohu Paetahi (TTP) – is attached to Mâori Language/Te Reo Mâori major.
It is a total immersion Mâori language programme which/and is available
to students who wish to complete their degree mainly in Te Reo Mâori.
The Hukatai stream for beginners involves intensive language learning in a
whānau environment. In the first year of study, students take six compulsory
Te Reo Mâori papers. For further details, contact the School of Mâori and
Pacific Development.

In this first year of full time study, students experience a number of different
subjects, before focusing on the major subject of the degree in their second
and third years.

»» To complete the requirements of a major, students must gain at least 120
points above 100 level in that major, including at least 60 points above
200 level
»» Students must also complete a supporting subject by gaining at least
70 points in a single subject, including at least 40 points above 100 level
»» Students must gain at least 35 points from the core Mâori and Pacific
Development papers, at least 15 points in Te Reo Mâori and at least
15 points in Tikanga Mâori
»» Students may complete a second major in any undergraduate major subject.
»» Students may take up to 80 points from subjects outside the field of the
degree
»» Students may take a further 40 points from outside the field of the degree
if the second major is a non-BMPD subject
»» To satisfy New Zealand Council of Legal Education requirements, students
wishing to proceed to a professionals programme and admission as a Barrister
and Solicitor must complete a 400 Level paper in Legal Ethics (10 points).
»» Students should check whether the papers they plan to study for their
major require any prerequisite papers at 100 level. If so, 100 level
prerequisite papers will need to be completed in the first year of their
programme of study
