Facilitation Issue no 2 - September 2002

Issue No: 2 – Sept 2002

I am extremely pleased to be asked to contribute to the Facilitation. I would like to take this opportunity to explain what my role as
Group Manager – Procurement entails, apart from trying to keep Dale in check and providing funds for the Social Club by buying raffle
tickets! I am part of Andrew Simpson’s office and my role is responsible for the procurement and purchasing strategies for the
University. Basically that means that I look for ways for the University to save “tons” (not allowed to say Sh..loads) of money. The ways
in which I do this is by going out to the market and negotiating better prices and also by cutting down on the number of vendors we use
and having “Preferred Supplier” arrangements. Some of the areas we have already done deals in are: photocopying paper, travel agents,
Air New Zealand, stationery supplies and accommodation. Another way of saving money is to make the processes in which we purchase
and pay for goods more streamlined. This will be done by using the internet rather than the paper requisitions we are presently using.
In conclusion I would like to thank all of you in FMD for making me feel so welcome in your midst.
PS: Check out the Procurement web site for more info.

Energy Information
The University uses per year some 85,000 gj
of energy per year.
The University supplies some 124,000 sq meters of floor space
with heating, lighting, and cooling services.
This equates to around 190 kilowatts per energy per year per
square metre costing around $11.50 per metre per year for
these services - or $126.00 for every student per year, how
does this compare with the energy costs for your home?

Lakes Restoration
Good bye pondweed !!
The grounds team were recently involved in
trialling weedmat in an attempt to control
the annual growth of the aquatic weed known
commonly as pondweed Potamogeton crispus.
The plant puts on abundant growth during
spring and early summer which grows to the
surface and then produces very small
insignificant flowers. In the trial we used
two 10 x 10 metre sheets of weedmat, one in
each of the lakes, being, Oranga and
Knighton Rd. While we are not stopping all
the growth in the lakes it is an ideal
opportunity to see how effective it is on the
area covered. The pondweed is partly
responsible for the large amounts of organic
material that exists on the lakes floor and
consequential algae problems etc.
