Facilitation Issue no 6 - December 200 2

FMD, University of Waikato
Issue No: 6 – December 2002
Kia Ora Koutou !
In the short while I've been here as the Campus Constable there have been a variety of things to deal with, on and off campus. I
have certainly noticed that when the locals of a community are vigilant and report suspicious behaviour to us, crimes soon learn that
they can’t even walk through the place without someone watching and reporting it. They soon go elsewhere looking for an 'easier'
touch.
That’s generally how they work - looking for something for nothing - another’s inattention or lax security - whether its leaving a
vehicle insecure or valuables in view, or not reporting suspicious behaviour - then becomes the crimes opportunity. They don’t care
who it belongs to. It could be yours or your mates. Don’t give them the chance.
I would just like to encourage you all to keep an eye open. If you don’t see anything, then open the other eye and when you see
anything suspicious call us ASAP. Congratulations on some good catches (and scares) so far. Keep it up.
With the festive season upon us, I am reminded of something once said to me by a wise person - "wherever you go, there you are!"
(.. so be sensible and you wont go / end up where you don’t want to be).
Have a great and safe Christmas and New Years.
We welcome 2 new faces to the Grounds team

FMD Standard Operating Procedures and Workshop Policies:
Over the last couple of months I have been looking at reviewing
existing health & safety manuals held by the different areas of
FMD and introduced some new to create a new FMD SOP. This
new manual will have standard operating procedures for the
different workshops, quick reference material safety data
sheets for chemicals and other substances used by the various
areas, standard procedures for when working with asbestos,
identified hazards and their controls, various standard forms
etc.
The end result of this manual is a quick reference for all staff
and I would like to see it on our web page with links to the main
University Health & Safety policy.
If you wish to view this document in its draft format please let
me know - I am open for any constructive comments.

Environmental Website Up and Running
You may think green-oriented folks like myself are out to have
everyone living in grass huts. Maybe so, but you better believe my
hut will be equipped with internet access. The University of
Waikato Environment website is live now and provides information
about everything from policy to recycling to commuting to work.
You can find the website at www.waikato.ac.nz/environment.
Curious about what kind of genetic engineering research happens
on campus? Wondering what the campus bus schedules are? It’s
all there. The site will continue to grow and change over time, so
please check it out and give me your feedback.

Weeding of the Lakes
You might have seen some aquatic action on the lakes in recent days. The action has certainly caught the eye of people’s attention
particularly at lunch time with a regular audience. Hayley, Brett and Allan all agree that they have enjoyed the positive feedback
from staff, students and public and interest in their work from staff, students and the public. There was one classic being asked if
they were scientists, when they replied “no”, the reply “ohhh – are you Periodic Detention workers?”
Unusual finds include – 1 shoe, pair of underwear, 1 glove, pantyhose, bike wheel, video tape, glasses, jugs, number of beer bottles
and a lot of weed!
