FMD, University of Waikato Issue No: 8 – February 2003 Greetings and a belated welcome to the new 2003 year! This copy of Facilitation was my responsibility this time and was delayed due to my involvement with the breaking news of the pesticide contamination issue within the old orchard site on the east of Hillcrest Road. This has taken up a huge amount of time by myself and others to ensure that we are appropriate in our handling of the issue and making sure that anyone using the site is doing so in a safe manner. As at the day of doing this comment (Wednesday 26th), we have completed initial sampling and reporting and believe that there is no immediate concerns and indeed relatively minor long term concerns. Nevertheless we are looking at some further sampling and reporting to clarify the issues, particularly in the areas where young children are commonly present on site, namely in the area of the Kura Kaupapa and the Kohanga Reo. Whilst the effect of any pesticide residues is considerably less for adults working on the site I have nevertheless met with the most obviously affected group, the gardeners, and some simple procedures have been put in place. If there is anybody else who has concerns on this matter please feel free to see me to discuss it. On a completely different topic, the management team has been working through the Strategic Plan for Facilities Management and has more recently had input from many people in the various work groups. That input has now been assimilated into the plan and within a week or two you should be receiving back the draft complete plan. This is a live document which will not be perfect but should represent the kinds of goals that the division is aiming for over the next year or so. We will now need to take the points mentioned in this strategic plan and bring them down to the actual how, who and when, these points get implemented. Many of the items mentioned in the plan are merely things we are already doing but others are targets which we may have to stretch a bit to achieve. It will be an interesting exercise to review this a year or so down the track and hopefully we will find that we were successful in achieving many of the goals we set ourselves. Lastly at the back of this newsletter there are the photo captions for the photos from the Alumni Revue. These captions were chosen by a totally impartial objective and unbiased team of myself and Ken Housely (well Ken is unbiased and objective etc anyway!) and I wish to thank all those who responded with suggestions, all of which were in good taste! All those participants in the photos will get a copy of the newsletter which will no doubt thrill the caption writers!! You might be interested (or otherwise) to know that the University of Waikato uses approximately twice as much water per student as any other University in New Zealand except Massey.
