Introduction to RideLink
Pictured: Tom Moke in carpark
For those staff that do not know, for a number
of years now a group of people have been working
on a computer program that has the ability match
the details of those people either requiring a ride
to campus or offering a ride to campus.
The main program designer was Jeremy Mould
from ITS, with a number of others working on the
project, those include John Cameron, David McGregor,
Ray Hayward and Marganne Allen.
The concept of RideLink was started to help reduce the number of vehicles travelling to
campus with a single occupant. Presently 80% of the vehicles parking in gates 1 and 10
travel to campus with a single occupant, that statistic alone is quiet staggering.
RideLink is available through the University website - www.ridelink.waikato.ac.nz.
We are also offering preferential parking in gates 1 and 10 for our RideLink permit
holders. To be eligible for a RideLink permit you must share a ride to campus with at
least one other person. You can have this organized through the RideLink program or have
made your own arrangements. RideLink is open to both staff and students.
The RideLink permits are available at the Security office in B Annex.
Marganne Allen had organised two lucky draw prizes for staff or students who registered
with RideLink by Friday the 13th June.
The winners were Shane Dudfield (student) and Margaret Henshaw (staff member) congratulations to both those winners (pictured below).
Comings and Goings
John Cameron has just returned from
a 3 week trip overseas, visiting a
number of universities in the UK to
see how they manage their facilities –
John will tell us more once he's settled
in again.
Issue No: 12 - June 2003
Many many years ago
when I was twenty three,
I got married to a widow
who was pretty as could be.
This widow had a grown-up
daughter who had hair of red.
My father fell in love with her,
And soon the two were wed.
This made my dad my son-in-law
And changed my very life.
My daughter was my mother,
For she was my father's wife.
To complicate the matters worse,
Although it brought me joy,
I soon became the father
Of a bouncing baby boy.
My little baby then became
A brother-in-law to dad.
And so became my uncle,
Though it made me very sad.
For if he was my uncle,
Then that also made him brother
To the widow's grown-up daughter
Who, of course, was my step-mother.
Father's wife then had a son,
Who kept them on the run.
And he became my grandson,
For he was my daughter's son.
My wife is now my mother's mother
And it makes me blue.
Because, although she is my wife,
She is my grandma too.
If my wife is my grandmother,
Then I am her grandchild.
And every time I think of it,
It simply drives me wild.
For now I have become
The strangest case you ever saw.
As the husband of my grandmother,
I am my own grandpa.
Trevor Harris and John Badham are
spending 2 days in Otago discussing Space management, drinking Speights
and looking at the new library building.
A number of the buildings-type folk will be going to an expo in Auckland
next week to see all the latest in building products, designs, etc.
We've just hosted Bevan Holden from ITS for 2 weeks while he learned
some more about 440v electricity.
The Property and Buildings staff from Auckland University of Technology
visited us on Friday to see the campus and our workshops (which are heaps
better than theirs) - it was good they came as we all got a free-bee lunch to
celebrate the mid-year and their visit.
Car 15 is away for a couple of weeks following some action down Grey
Street way - If you're really curious Hemi may be able to let you know
more.
FMD Social Club
Thanks again to everyone for supporting the weekly raffles – these help to fund activities run by the Social Club.
Last Friday’s dinner at the Post (Sky Riverside) was very successful with 56 people attending.

Savings Achieved over May 2002 equate to 9.3% however factors to consider are:
a) Replacement Late 2002 of Block R Gas chiller with Electrical chiller
b) Energy Trends in first 3 months of year showed a 5% increase over 2002 Figures
Real savings therefore are close to the 15% Target as set by EECA

A former FMD Porter gets caught by a Scottish Lassie
Some of you will be aware that the University is looking at
developing an Information Commons (sometimes called a Learning
Centre), adjacent to the Library. The above photo is of an
Information Commons at the University of Nottingham.
The whole building internally is built on a spiral such that you go
to the top in a lift and then wind your way down in a continuous
spiraling passageway amidst stacks of books and computer work
stations.
I suspect our “Commons” will not look like this one!!
