Facilitation Issue no 18 - December 2003

FMD, University of Waikato
Issue No: 18 – December 2003
Well Christmas has arrived again and it seems to come earlier every year. It’s been a hard year I think for everyone in
Facilities Management, but we have achieved a lot. We have also had some fun along the way which is pretty important
as well. Next year will be a year of considerable change which will include a new boss for me, Geoff Balme, who starts
on 19 January, a new boss for the University as Professor Bryan Gould retires, and a very significant capital building
programme which was announced in the papers recently. This will all be challenging and I hope exciting for us all.
Thanks to everyone for the efforts throughout the year and I am sure we are going to see similar efforts and
achievements in 2004.
All the best for the holiday season (such as it is) and I look forward to working with you in the New Year.

The intrepid group of Building Maintenance staff prior to
their kayaking adventure on Wednesday 17th. Trevor Harris
took this photograph in case we lost anybody during the
afternoon, but fortunately all survived to continue their
good work in 2004.
Roger Buckell in his usual place of work at the University.
In an alternative role where Roger provides much service to
the St Johns Ambulance service he was recently honoured
by Her Majesty the Queen as a “Serving Brother” due to
his exemplary service on behalf of St Johns.
Recycled Paper
According to figures supplied by the East Hamilton Lions
Club, they have in the Year June 2002 to 2003, recycled
67.46 tonne of paper, most of it from the University
recycling scheme, whilst not accurate it does indicate that
of the 168 tonne of paper purchased annually by the
University, roughly 40% is being recycled.
The recycled paper is collected in plastic wheelie bins that
are situated in 69 different sites on campus, collection is
weekly and the bins are stored in a garage at the Ruakura
Campus, the Lions club sorts the paper into different
grades and colours and then in a convoy of cars and
trailers takes it to Carter Holt for sale, the monies raised
are then used for donations to various charities.
The amount of $10,519 (not all from recycling paper) was
distributed to 28 different groups in the past year, those
groups included Habitat for Humanity, Starship
Foundation, Child Cancer Foundation and Maugatautari
Ecological Trust to name but a few.

FMD Social Club
A big thank you to everyone who supported the Social
Club raffles and activities during 2003.
The funds from the raffles assist in subsidising the bus
trips, lunchtime sausage sizzles, after work drinks, midyear and end-of-year socials.
The Social Club are planning another bus trip for early
2004 – details will be available in the New Year.
If you would like to become an active member of the
Social Club organising committee please see Tom Reidy.

This facility will also house a number of other hitech and innovative industries.
Congratulations to Hayden Glassey a
casual porter who passed his grading
for Black Belt on Saturday 6/12/03.
Hayden has been working for the
Porter service and the mailroom and
recently as a casual for Security.
I think this shot speaks for itself. Perhaps the most elegant
couple at the ATEM-AAPPA conference in Adelaide recently.
Hayden is intent on becoming a Police Officer.
The Gardeners doing what they do best, which is
maintaining the grounds in a magnificent condition,
such that many (including myself) believe we have the
best grounds of any University in the country. A
truly “Noble” effort!!
