FMD, University of Waikato Issue No: 26 - October 2004 Social Club Mystery Bus Trip 13th November 2004 26 of us left Hamilton at 7.30am not knowing where we were headed. We ended up at Waihi and had a guided tour of the Martha Gold Mine. We then went to Waihi Beach RSA Club for lunch which everyone enjoyed very much. Bill the bus driver who organised our day without anyone knowing where we were going then took us to Bowentown for a look. We then drove back to the Karangahape Gorge & stopped for afternoon tea at a winery/café before stopping in Paeroa to have dinner at a club there. Can you Hackett!! We then headed back for home which ended the trip at about 8pm. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and a big thank you goes to Tom Reidy for making this happen. Linda It was a pleasure to attend the 2004 New Zealand Arborticultural nd Association, ISA 32 Chapter Conference and NZAA/SHIHL National Tree Championship held at Copthorne Hotel and Resort, Queenstown. The things we have to do!! The range of topics covered were numerous and I will only mention a few. ¾ Tree AZ on development sites presented by Jeremy Barrell from the UK. ¾ Using the Resistograph by Peter Blank, from IML, Australia, and in bed with the IRD by Katrina Fowler from New Zealand. By the end of the conference I was knackered!! Saturday gave me the opportunity to watch the climbing competitions, enjoy the serenity of the scenery, especially the snow peak mountains, and rippling lake and reflect on everything I learnt over the past three days. Then the finale. I hacked it!! AJ styles off the 43m Kawarau bridge, which apparently was the world’s first Bungy site. Shar assisting with setting up at Graduation I would like to mention, I thank you Mark for giving me the opportunity to attend the conference. Nan for encouraging me to go, and the remaining ground staff for carrying the extra Shar Te Mara workload during my absence. 100 % TU MEKE Kia ora koutou This is to let people who don’t know that we have a Touch team in the Uni Rec Centre competition on Tuesday nights, the name of our team is 100% TU MEKE, the team consist of staff from the Grounds department who gives us inside knowledge of the fields and Security staff that make sure everyone is safe and secure and a member of the Mailroom who makes sure everything gets though and Portering staff to carry the heavy work load and also a staff member from the Postgraduate office who makes sure we achieve our goal. We have played 4 games so far and have drawn 1 and won 3 and hope our good luck continues as we are looking desperately for any sponsor/s (hint hint) JC and the FMD social club (hahahaha). Playing touch is a good way of getting together and having fun and enjoying ourselves and also a good excuse to have a beer or two. We play hard and fair (well most of the time). So if you have nothing else to do you are more than welcome to come down and support us at our next game just ask any team member and they will tell you what time we play and what field we will be playing on. Team members are: Luke (NO FLUKE) Karanga, Merv (WITH THE SWERVE) Kapea, Derek (DANGERMAN) Freeman, Mike (MEAN MACHINE) Green, Devon (THE MAN) Daniels, Jim (GOT THE SKILLS) Wilson, Zita (CANT TOUCH THIS) Enoka, Terri (DON’T MESS WITH ME) Collins, Hayley (THE COMET) Coleman, Huri (GET OUT OF MY WAY) Nelson, Shirley (TWINKLE TOES) Ashby, Linda (ICE COOL) Brahne, And our super sub Jhai (THE HOT STEPPER) Kapea. Pieter Koers scored a perfect 100% for the latest assignment in the "Construction Planning" module of his course - Amazing! Well Done!! Changes Uni Golf Day Well, as I think everyone knows Cherie Mason, Susan Jensen and Robert Moir are all leaving us between now and Christmas. This is the most people we have had resign for a long time and always of course makes one wonder if THERE IS SOMETHING IN THE WATER!!! All 3 will be very much missed by Facilities Management and we will all have our own memories of what made them valued colleagues. Amongst mine will be Robert for his desire (in the friendliest of ways) to stir me up on some topic whenever we had morning tea; Cherie for her amazingly prompt and efficient draughting services to me; and Susan for the pace at which she did everything from her work to her movement down the corridor outside clutching a small cardboard packet. They will all be missed and I sincerely wish them all the best in their new endeavours and please do come back and visit on occasions. John Cameron Another Uni Golf Day has been and gone. There were a few people flying the FMD flag, some a little more illustriously than others. Whilst there was good representation from the Porters, Security and Building Maintenance, it was Derek Freeman who really turned in a star performance. He played off a lowly 13 handicap, swore that he has only played 10 games this year, hit a couple of less-than-perfect shots, missed a few putts and still managed to walk away with two prizes in the “Burglars” category Go Derek! Facilitation will be produced monthly.
