Kawhia Bus/Boat Trip 9th April
Proud Parents
Even though the day was overcast with a few showers we all had a
great day. Before the boat trip we had time to stop and see some eels
in a stream at someone’s place in Kawhia - very fascinating. The
boat trip took approx 2½ hours and we were able to listen to a running
commentary of the history of the place. We enjoyed a scrumptious
hangi on the boat for lunch. For an early dinner we had fish n chips
compliments of the social club. We also visited Acacia Bay beach
which had some awesome views of the sea and surrounding scenery.
We finally made it back home by 6pm.
A son for Panapa & Monehu Thompson
We look forward to our next trip to Coromandel (details overleaf).
Baby Taumata Selwyn Thompson was born on the
17th April, and weighed in at a healthy 9.1 pounds.
Panapa and Monehu are thrilled with their new arrival
and Panapa takes all the credit!
Present at the birth was Merv Kapea’s wife Alice,
who is Taumata’s Godmother.
*****
A daughter for Ken & Dawn Kuunders
Baby Amie-Ellen was born on the 21st April, and
weighed in at a healthy 8 pounds.
Ken and Dawn are delighted with their little girl and
Ken has been seen around Facilities Management
with a rather large smile.
All staff of Facilities Management would like to
congratulate
the
proud
parents
on
their
achievements and wish them all the best for the
future, especially the sleepless nights and the
required nappy changes.

Special K Women’s Triathlon “Karleen Smith & Sheryn Ireland”
After months of vigorous training, hard work, and complete dedication both
Karleen and Sheryn completed the Special K Women’s Triathlon held at
Karapiro on Easter Sunday. Yes, this meant that they both had to give up
Easter Eggs, Hot Cross Buns, Chocolate, McDonalds, KFC, and all other
yummy takeaway food to ensure they completed their goal.
They both set a very similar goal of wishing to complete the course in
approx 1 hour. However, after registration on the Saturday afternoon, they
decided they would have to re-think their times as there appeared to be a
few hills that the Council had not removed around the Karapiro area which
would hinder their time when trying to bike and run.
The swim wasn’t too bad, just a little numbing to the face, and hands, and
there were a few issues like weed in front of faces that just added to the
excitement when swimming. Then there was a short run to the transition
up approx 40 steep, slippery wet steps, put on some socks and shoes,
grab a bike helmet and bike (hopefully your own), then off onto the bike
section. First off there is a hill to climb, nothing too scary and they only
spotted a couple of people walking up the hill with their bikes. But not
Karleen and Sheryn – they had done more than enough training with all
their dedication that they just breezed up to the top of the hill. Then onto
the run section – the aim was for them both to
run the whole course, however, due to the
number of hills involved they knew this would
not happen – although they both did run the
majority of the course.
The training has continued for these two
dedicated triathletes so that they can beat their
times for next year’s event. Unfortunately
Emma was unable to compete this year, but
she is still training, and has advised that she
will complete at least two of them next year,
along with Karleen and Sheryn.
Exchanging a Porters
life for a Police Officers
life
I had occasion to visit the
Royal New Zealand
Police College on the
weekend 16-17th April.
Whilst there I caught up
with our ex casual porter
Hayden Glassy.
Hayden is thriving and
loves the challenges that
he is being set on a daily
basis.
Hayden graduates Police
College in 6 weeks and
has been posted to
Central Auckland. As a
matter of note, Hayden
was the tallest (6ft 5 in)
recruit at the college until
another recruit came
along at the height of
7ft1in.
Facilities Management Social Club
I would like to convey a big thank you to the FMD
Social Club’s committee for all the social events and
away trips organised on behalf of the members.
The lunch time BBQ’s and after work functions, with
the excellent cuisine and refreshments, gives
everyone a chance to mingle and catch up with staff
members from all areas of FMD. The away trips are
always enjoyable and educational and the pleasant
company make for a great day out.
A special thanks to Tom Reidy and Linda Buchanan
for all the organisational work required to ensure the
success of the social club. Much of this work is
completed in their own time.
Thanks also to the management for supporting the
social club.

Three New Recruits in Buildings Maintenance section
Issue no.28 (Jan/Feb 2005) welcomed two of our new recruits (Mua Taito and Paul Blair) but at that time we didn’t manage to get
a picture. Also new to our section is Neil Hindman.
Neil Hindman - A little bit about me … I am married to Sue, I have two adult children still at home. I was born, raised and still
living in Morrinsville. My interests include cycling, motorbike riding, walking and following most sport. I am enjoying working at
the University and in particular the FMD team.
