FMD, University of Waikato Issue No: 82 – June 2010 rd 3 Annual University Planning & Design Summit John Cameron and Tony Dicks spent three days at a forum/conference in Sydney in June – the aim of the gathering was to learn more about the strategic planning of campuses and the international trends in student accommodation. Presentations were made by people from Canada, UK and Australia – the kiwis choosing to be part of the audience. It became fairly evident from the presentations and discussions that countries like Australia fund their universities to a far higher level than our government does. But the general feeling among the kiwi contingent was that we make far better use of the limited funds we are given and consequently we tend to be less “wasteful” than people in the more affluent countries. If you have anything you would like to share with the rest of the team within FMD, please send it into Judy Swetman, and it will be included in an issue of Facilitation. We endeavour to put this newsletter out at the end of each month – next issue is due out end of July! Singer Electrical installing a new light fitting in G Block, as part of a major upgrade of lighting for this building. Fairly lengthy discussion took place around the change that is taking place in the way teachers teach and the way that students learn – it was suggested that patterns are changing and the emerging “super traits” of education are that it must offer wide choice, it must be customised, it must encourage and support collaboration and it must be fast and fun. Overall, the conference was informative and gave good insight into the way Campus and accommodation planning is done on other campuses and in other countries – we hope that we will be able to extract and implement some of the good ideas here at Waikato in due course.
