Facilitation Issue no 106 - September 2012

FMD, University of Waikato
Issue No: 106 – September 2012
TEM Conference
The FMD delegation to the TEM conference in Adelaide in September comprised Tony Dicks, Allison Henry and Neil
Hindman.
The trip over to Adelaide was long but in fine weather all the way and the team were able to enjoy a few days of excellent
Aussie weather. The close to 700 strong conference was held at the Adelaide Convention Centre, a modern building large
enough to host a mining drilling conference (including many enormous pieces of machinery), at the same time! The
photograph shows the room where the TEFMA breakfast was held – notice the banks of tiered seating at the back which
have been raised to create a flat floor space below – very nifty.
Tony presented a paper describing the transformation of our Library into the Student Centre. This went off very well and
there were a number of people who asked
questions and expressed interest in the project.
Other speakers covered a variety of subjects,
from energy and asset management, through
sustainable designs and projects to new designs
for learning spaces. At the same time the
conference catered for tertiary administrators,
so there were a number of presentations that
targeted the other members of the Waikato
delegation who were from SASD, FASS and so
on.
After the conference Allison took the
opportunity to visit her family in Sydney and
Neil is busy with a ‘big trip’ in a campervan –
from Perth to Sydney – something that we will
probably read about in a future Facilitation.
Kudos Science Awards
Quiz – answers on reverse side
The Kudos awards are held once a year to celebrate science achievement in
the Waikato region.
1.
Which is the only word in the English
language that ends in “ …mt”?
2.
Four University of Waikato staff won awards. Professor Cam Nelson received
the University of Waikato Lifetime Achievement Award, Dr Mike Duke, whose
research into technology of roofing materials won the Hill Laboratories Science

4.
environmental education and initiatives on campus.

The $4,000 prize money will be spent on environmental education on campus
and research.
5.

Which four words in English end in
“… dous”?
Which is the longest word that can
be made using the letters on only
one row of a QWERTY keyboard?
Bob the Builder
Last week John C, Pieter and I visited Bob Grant’s home to view the major rebuild. The main task was to replace the existing
dilapidated flat roof and framing with a new mono-pitch roof. But Bob needed to continue to live in the house while a new
roof was constructed over the winter, hence the giant plastic cover on scaffold. In addition, new double-glazed aluminium
joinery will be installed all round, as well as the kitchen, bathroom and toilet being completely refurbished. Bob hopes the
work will be substantially complete by Xmas, when we may then revisit to “sign off” the work!

If you want to keep up with environmental matters happening on campus,
I recommend that you subscribe to Rachael Goddard’s monthly Greenbites
Newsletter. To do so, drop Rachael an email ([email protected]). If
you didn’t get September’s issue you will have missed Mark Thompson
YouTube(ing) Community Planting Day UoW. The newsletters are also
available on the Environmental website.
Let us make our division a better place!
A commitment we should each make every
day:
I will start each day by …
1.
For the week 10-Sep to 14-Sep we had Waste Management take weight
2.
measurements of all the waste collected from the campus – 4.1 tons for
the week. This is only a 1 week snap shot and first indications are that we
may not be “dumping” as much as we initially thought. Next year we hope 3.
to be getting weight measurements on a daily basis.
4.
Other matters “green”. Ken Kuunders is quite involved in trying to widen
the establishment of recycling in tea rooms that FMD service. This
5.
presents challenges in finding space for the recycle bins and then finding
6.
time to service them. Throughout the tea rooms that FMD services we buy
in over 425 containers of milk weekly, so if we could get most of them
7.
recycled that would be a good outcome.
The month ahead (now actually) –
• Tue 16-Oct-2012 Graduation Ceremony – Marae
• Wed 17-Oct-2012 Graduation Ceremony - Claudelands Event Centre. A
new challenge for the portering, grounds staff and others.
• Fri 19-Oct-2012 Semester B Ends
• Mon 22-Oct-2012 Labour Day – No doubt staff will be planning to add a
day or 2 annual leave either side of this weekend. Get in early or risk
being disappointed.
• Mon 29-Oct-2012 B Semester and Full-year Exams begins (ends 10-Nov2012). The week leading up to these can be busy for the electrical,
carpentry and portering teams as the make sure the exam rooms
prepared. A reminder to all other staff that care must be taken to avoid
noise near the exam rooms during the exam period.
