FMD, University of Waikato Issue No: 109 – Jan/Feb/Mar/Apr 2013 From 2013 Facilitation will come out every two months rather than monthly. This first issue covers the first four months of the year as we are a little late getting started. This is a staff newsletter for all FM staff to contribute to – please don’t hesitate to come forward with articles you think will be of interest to others within the division. Lauren Hartnoll I have been a Human Resource Advisor at the University for coming up one year. Facilities Management Division is one of the areas where I am the HR Advisor. Some aspects of my position are to provide advice to management and employees in relation to HR policies, guidelines and practices, as well as assisting with recruitment processes, including advertising and interviewing. My role here is very varied, and no day is the same, I love the challenge. A bit about me before life at the University: I grew up on a small farm in Auckland (yes another JAFA), with my parents, older sister and younger brother. I graduated from AUT and got my first full time position with Accor hotels and Resorts. After a 12 month traineeship, where I worked in every area of the hotel, I was lucky enough to get a position as HR Co-ordinator. A year later I was transferred to Wellington, where I was the HR Co-ordinator for four Accor hotels. In 2007 I moved to Hamilton to be the HR Manager of Novotel Tainui Hamilton and Ibis Tainui Hamilton. I then decided to get experience in another industry and worked for Fairfax Media for 2 years before unfortunately my position was disestablished. I was then lucky enough to be successful in this position and started in June 2012. I’m pleased to be part of your team and when you see me around come and say hello. IJK Pathways Realignment At the end of examinations last year work commenced on upgrading the junction, meeting points, i.e. bus stops, shops, base of KL Block. A much needed improvement with greater emphasis for pedestrians movement and safety. We look forward shortly to completing the planting following the Big DRY. --- Mark Thompson Before After Nan Sinclair’s Retirement On the 13th February, at the Grounds Workshop, work colleagues and friends gathered for a Retirement Function for Nan Sinclair. Special guests included Nans son Rob, whom use to work for the Grounds Department, Eilla McKenzie whom helped fund the fernery re-development in 1996 and a close friend of Nan’s, Lloyd, whom played the bagpipes for the occasion . Nan was employed as a Gardener/Groundsperson for 18 years and involved in many of the developments. Nan was well known for her interest and skills in photography and contributed a number of pictures to Facilitation. While working here she managed to take 9 albums of photos of the Campus Landscape, each album containing 300 photos, all dated and labelled. Thank you to all who attended and we all wish Nan a long and Happy Retirement. --- Mark Thompson Contractors’ Shout – 12 March 2013 April Graduation – Thanks! On 12th March the FMD team once again hosted a wide Selection of our consultants and contractors. Could you pass our thanks onto those from your team who assisted with Graduation please. “Our Shout” was the most successful to date and we had a bigger turnout than ever before. It was really good to see people from all the different businesses sharing stories and jokes, an acknowledgement that we are all working here for the common good – to make and keep the University of Waikato the best it can be. Thank you very much for assisting at the April graduation ceremonies. Your contribution to these ceremonies helped to make the graduation ceremony a memorable event for the graduates and their family and friends. On behalf of the Graduation Office, thank you again I look forward to seeing you at future graduation ceremonies. Thanks so much to all FMD staff who attended to host those people who are not always seen as a crucial part of the FMD Anna Cook Team Leader, Assessment & Graduation Office team – but they are. ---- Tony Dicks Picture taken at the Graduation held at Claudelands FMD Social Club: The Social Club has several numbers available in the weekly $2 raffle – if you want a ticket please see Faye. Apart from the chance of winning $50 in the weekly draw, the funds raised from the raffles goes towards subsidising functions and sausage sizzles. The support of those already in the raffles is much appreciated – thanks! Facilitation will be produced bi-monthly.
