FMD, University of Waikato Issue No: 112 – September/October 2013 Hi, I’m Craig and I’m here to fill the shoes of Sonny Te Karu as Logistics Team Leader. Coming from Duty Free Stores at the Hamilton Airport and being surrounded by alcohol and cigarettes all day, this role is definitely a change of scenery and is a lot more varied, with a much bigger area to cover. With the help of everyone, I am slowly finding my feet and enjoy getting out and about, and getting to know this big campus. I don’t seem to be getting myself too lost! In my spare time I’m either in the garden (along with my assistant Karleen), or hidden away in my art room where I try to conjure up some master pieces in the hopes that someone will want to hang them on their walls. Thanks and I look forward to getting to know you all. Exciting times ahead! Within the next few days we will know who our contractor is to be on the new Law-Management building – and they will soon be setting up on site. Some preparatory work is already taking place as trees are removed, rocks are cleared and roadways are amended. Behind the scenes there are still a number of lastminute refinements being made to the plans for dealing with the people and facilities that will be affected by the building project. This new building will form a really prominent and iconic structure on the skyline and we look forward to mid-2015 when it will be complete and occupied. Our thanks to all the members of the FMD team who have been involved during the design process – attending meetings, checking plans, improving specifications, making suggestions, and so on. Of special note is John Badham, who even spent time working on the project while he was laid up in hospital. We look forward to a continuing level of engagement and co-operation as the building work progresses. Tony Dicks Next Issue – November/December If you want to keep Facilitation going, we need your articles. Please send items of interest through to Judy Swetman so they can be included. HEALTH AND SAFETY - Contractors It’s getting to that time again when most students will soon be vacating campus for their summer holidays and many of our construction projects will start vamping up, with the flurry of contractors on site. In recent months we have had a couple of instances involving our contractors, whereby H&S practises have not been followed, leading to potential harm and in one case, the injury of an employee of one of those contractors. This has brought renewed attention to tightening up on our contractors H&S practices and procedures and to ensure they keep themselves and those working for them, out of harm’s way. Mike Davies, the university’s H&S Coordinator, has recently put together a document called “University of Waikato Minimum Health and Safety Requirements for Contractors”. This is a guide for our contractors of what the university expects from them and their staff. It has been sent out to all FMD contractors and will be given to any new contractors that start working for the university. I know it’s difficult to find the time, but please look over this document as it is a good reminder to us all of the expectations that we put on our contractors and essentially the example that we should be illustrating. You can find an electronic copy of this guide on our FMD Shared folder under Health and Safety, a hard copy on the FMD Notice Board or come and see me as I have several copies in my office. Remember to be on the lookout for any unsafe practices and report these to either your line manager or myself so that we can ensure that our workplaces are free from aspects that could cause serious harm.
