FMD, University of Waikato Issue No: 113 – November/December 2013 Well once again, and seemingly faster than previous years, the Christmas break has come around again. This has been quite a tough year for many people, and the division in general, particularly with the passing of Hemi in October. Many others have had moments of joy and moments of sadness throughout the year – health issues and losses of family and friends. It seems to me that unfortunately that is increasingly the way it seems to be as we get older. For those reasons and many others it is therefore really important that we live the expression carp diem which is ‘seize the day’. None of us know what is out there so let’s live as much as we can, and particularly at this time of the year let’s ensure we all enjoy the company and time with family and friends. In my case it will be a three generation family Christmas of about 20 people at my daughters and then off to Lake Rotoiti for a few days before coming back on the 6th. I know that Mark Thompson is crying out for rain sometime soon for his grounds but for the rest of us I suspect we would like to have nice fine weather to enjoy the holiday break and we would be reasonably comfortable if the rain started soon after we got back!! Thanks to everyone for all of the efforts throughout the year. I perhaps don’t say often how much I appreciate the efforts of all FMD staff, but I do, and realise that there are many unsung heroes in the background keeping the place ticking over, in ways that most people don’t understand or see. Once again, thanks to all – have a great break and see you in the New Year! John Extracted from an article by Ford New Zealand …… Spot the Difference! If you are driving this holiday, here are some tips to reduce the cost of your travels: Keep a light touch on the accelerator. The most used method involves driving as if there is a sleeping kitten just under your accelerator. Go easy…don’t wake the kitten. Ensure your tyres are up to the correct pressure; that includes your trailer too. Time your departure to ensure you’re not stuck in traffic. Anticipate ‐ Always look ahead and minimise your reactionary braking, or aggressive acceleration. Smooth out your driving and you’ll save fuel. Don’t drive angry – Easier said than done, but angry or aggressive driving burns more fuel. Above: College Halls Jan 2012 & Below: College Halls now Cruise – Using cruise control on the motorway can save as much as 5 per cent versus manually driving between 90 and 100 kmh. Are you in tune? By not servicing your car you may be saving money in servicing costs, but you’ll end up paying in the long run with poorer fuel economy or even a break down. Balanced? Streamlined? Check both your vehicle and/or your trailer to ensure everything is balanced or distributed evenly and is as streamlined as possible. Ensure it’s all properly secure. Rewards – This one has nothing to do with your car. Watch out for grocery store deals. Some can have many cents off a litre when you spend a certain amount, which is very exciting for your wallet!
