Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme Inspiring excellence, all-round development and leadership Waikato siblings sing their way to the US University of Waikato music students June and Jarvis Dams, soprano and baritone, were selected for this year's Astoria Music Festival Vocal Apprenticeship Program held in Astoria, Oregon. Hillary scholar June and her brother Jarvis, both postgraduate music students, had to audition by singing and video recording two contrasting arias which they submitted online with a headshot, CV and reference. "It was [senior teaching fellow] Dame Malvina Major who suggested we audition," says June. “It was an amazing experience.” During their time on the program, June and Jarvis took part in Italian language classes, and went through movement classes, stage training and acting. They had individual lessons and coaching rehearsals, and attended Master Classes with performers such as Juliana Gondek and Ruth Ann Swensen. Days ran from 9am to 10pm at night, but June says it felt like a singing holiday for both of them. “It was great having my brother with me. Jarvis and I are so used to singing together so it was good having someone there who you already knew.” June, the elder of the two, is in the final year of her Doctor of Musical Arts. Jarvis, a Hillary alumnus, graduated with a Masters of Music last year and is now studying towards a Postgraduate Diploma (Music) in professional performance practice. SINGING SUCCESS: Siblings June and Jarvis Dams. From the Vice-Chancellor Through the years the Sir Edmund Hillary programme has fostered leadership and excellence in each scholar – qualities we admire at the University of Waikato. This year has been an excellent year for our scholars. Luke Coxhead, Natalie Good, Sharee Hamilton and Steven Rae were recently named the recipients of the Step Higher award where they will travel to Khumbu Valley in Nepal next year. We look forward to hearing about their experiences; it is great to see four passionate scholars inspired by the work Sir Edmund Hillary started in Nepal. The Step Higher awards ceremony was also special as it fell on the 60th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary scaling Mt Everest. This made the day particularly momentous for our recipients, and we are grateful to Compass Group for their support in establishing this award. While those scholars are thinking about Nepal, Chris Dunn, an alumnus of the University and the Hillary programme, recently competed in the highest race in the world – the Tenzing Hillary Marathon. Starting at the Everest Base Camp, Chris travelled 60km through the Himalayas to Namche Bazaar which is an extraordinary accomplishment for any individual. Many of our Hillary scholars are acknowledged for their achievements in various ways. The Wallace Corporation University of Waikato Blues Awards are one such platform that celebrates student excellence in sport, creative and performing arts. The Blues Awards take place in October every year and are one of the University’s strongest traditions, dating back to 1971, with the tradition of the “cultural” blue joining the sporting blue in 1990. Through the Hillary programme, students are able to recognise their full potential, are given skills that set them up for life, and become competent leaders that inspire others. These talented young individuals hold with them qualities that we see in those who achieve great things, and we are proud of them. Professor Roy Crawford Vice-Chancellor Wallace Corporation University of Waikato Blues The Blues celebrate the commitment and achievements of students and acknowledge their contribution to the University of Waikato. The Awards evening and dinner will be held on Friday 4 October 2013 in The Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts from 6.30pm. Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Programme WHO CAN APPLY? Follow us on facebook www.facebook.com/ HillaryScholarsWaikatoUniversity Sold on theatre – studying with a passion A group of Theatre Studies Hillary scholars say support and mentoring is the aspect of their scholarship they appreciate most – along with the chance to be part of a tight-knit group who love the theatre. “We’re all sold on theatre, it’s our passion,” says Ngaia Mason, a fourth year student doing a conjoint Bachelor of Primary Teaching and Bachelor of Arts degree (majoring in Theatre Studies). “But the mentoring we get and the opportunity to gain academic leadership skills are some of the best things about being a Hillary scholar.” Ngaia, along with Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws third year student Natalie Foster, Theatre Studies honours student Brendan Theodore and Bachelor of Arts student Philip Garrity, are well into rehearsals for Carving In Ice’s production of Alan Bennett’s play The History Boys. The four are involved in both acting and production, with Philip playing the role of Posner, Brendan producing, Ngaia as production assistant and Natalie as wardrobe assistant. Carving In Ice artistic director and University of Waikato Convenor of Theatre Studies, Gaye Poole, believes the chance to learn every aspect of theatre is a major benefit of the Theatre Studies programme. “The range of skills these students learn will stand them in good stead in any career,” she says. “Theatre Studies is not just about acting and working with me on Carving In Ice productions. They might be an actor in one production and a wardrobe assistant or a production assistant on the next so they get a real grounding in all facets of the production process and develop a consistent work ethic and a respect for performers, technicians and production managers alike,” Gaye says. All the extra-curricular activity on the Theatre Studies programme means giving up weekends and evenings. A PASSION FOR ACTING: From left, Natalie Foster, Brendan Theodore, Ngaia Mason and Philip Garrity. “You’re with these other people who have the same interest and passion that you do,” says Natalie Foster. Out of the four, Brendan is the one with his sights firmly set on a producer role. He already has a taste of what it’s like to make sure everyone turns up on time for rehearsal. “But this is community theatre and everyone is a volunteer so it’s not hard to motivate people,” he says. Meanwhile, in his role as Posner, Philip is rehearsing hard to be ready for opening night. “It does have an effect on your social life,” Brendan says. “I not only have to sing but to sing in French so as an untrained singer it’s a challenge but it’s also a lot of fun.” Their role as Hillary scholars and their love of theatre also means they have formed a tight-knit, mutually-supportive group. Alan Bennett's highly popular play The History Boys is on from 30 August to 7 September at the Playhouse, Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts. Highest Marathon for Hillary scholar alumnus A University of Waikato Hillary Scholar alumnus braved ice, snow and altitude as he took on the highest race in the world – the Tenzing Hillary 60km Ultra Marathon in May this year. Qualified snowboard instructor, internationallevel wake-boarder, action sports fanatic, and former Sir Edmund Hillary scholar Chris Dunn was sponsored by the University of Waikato to train for and compete in the Marathon. The Tenzing Hillary Ultra Marathon runs through the Everest Expedition Base Camp crisscrossing the Sherpa village trails to Namche Bazaar covering a distance of 60km – to celebrate the 60th year of Sir Edmund Hillary’s ascent of Everest. Athletes had to battle snow, ice, altitude and exposure to rough terrain as they descended almost two vertical kilometres. “Ever since I was a Hillary scholar I've had a goal to visit Everest Base Camp,” says Chris, who during the day is a graphic designer for Gold Coast-based water sports company Jetpilot. “I wanted to understand what Sir Ed endured on his expedition to the summit.” He says despite the fact the runners were descending, the course had plenty of uphill running, including the world’s highest and longest uphill section covering 10km. HIGHEST HEIGHTS: Chris Dunn training for his toughest marathon – the Tenzing Hillary Ultra Marathon. “That was after 30km or four hours of running. That next 10km took me over three hours,” says Chris. “The course turned out to be roughly 66km instead of 60km. The toughest part was when my GPS watch ticked over 60km and I was nowhere near the finish line, wondering if I was on the right track. With only 18 participants in the Ultra Marathon event, for almost the entire race I was alone. AT THE FINISH LINE: Chris Dunn ran for over 12 hours and came eighth overall. “It was a weird feeling running at the finish line, after putting in so much effort for over 12 hours and having no one at the finish line to congratulate you. “It was the most epic experience – just getting to the start line fit and healthy proved difficult. I could never have done what I did without the training support from the University of Waikato and the Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship programme.” Chris came eighth overall and was the third foreigner in the Ultra Marathon race. Sam Gibb, also a University alumnus, placed ninth. The marathon was created to commemorate the first successful ascent of Everest by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Ed in May 1953. Hillary scholars set to travel to Nepal Following the success of this year's trip, four more University of Waikato Sir Edmund Hillary scholars have been given the opportunity to travel to Khumbu Valley in Nepal next year to view the work started by Sir Edmund Hillary and the Himalayan Trust. Luke Coxhead, Natalie Good, Sharee Hamilton and Steven Rae are recipients of the Step Higher Award and will spend three weeks in Nepal. As part of the award, scholars must fundraise $1,000 each for the Himalayan Trust. Luke Coxhead Hockey player Luke is in his honours year of a Bachelor of Management Studies and has a graduate position lined up with Ernst & Young in Auckland once he’s finished at Waikato University. Being on the Hillary programme for the last four years, Luke says the trip to Nepal will be the perfect way to finish off his studies. “Being able to walk in the footsteps of Sir Edmund Hillary was the reason I applied for the award. I hope to gain a lot from the experience and it’s something I’ll never forget.” HOCKEY PLAYER: Luke Coxhead. As a Junior Blackstick, Brooke has played tournaments in India and Australia, and recently she travelled to Germany to play in the Junior World Cup. “Brooke is an excellent role model to have around. She gives a lot back through the coaching of kids and is an excellent example of how, with dedication and hard work, one can succeed academically as well as at sport.” Brooke had to play a number of national tournaments in the U16 and U21 squads before being selected in the Junior Blacksticks and the Blacksticks development squad. SNOWBOARDER: Natalie Good. Sharee Hamilton “I had to go through selection camps at the start of the year and from there I was selected to be a part of the national Blacksticks. My two biggest goals now are to win the Junior World Cup with my team and play in the 2016 Olympic Games.” Brooke has been playing hockey since she was four, and her family is also dedicated to the sport. Like Natalie, Sharee is studying a conjoint degree in Management and Law and wants to get into a graduate law position once she finishes university. The basketball player had her eyes set on the Step Higher Award since last year and says it’s a “once in a lifetime opportunity”. “My dad played representative hockey and my brother, Shay Neal, plays in the Blacksticks men’s squad.” Brooke is studying for a Bachelor of Communication Studies and so is Kim Tanner another Hillary scholar who was recently named in the women’s Junior Blacksticks. BASKETBALLER: Sharee Hamilton. Stepping Higher Steven Rae The Step Higher Award, which is sponsored by Compass Group, covers the scholars’ travel, accommodation and daily allowance for up to three weeks. The Compass Group is the world’s leading provider of contract food and supplies hospitality services on campus, including halls of residence catering. Steven, whose sport is cricket, is in the middle of his Masters of Management Studies degree and one day wants to work overseas. For Steven, applying for the award was an opportunity he couldn’t miss. “I applied for the Step Higher Award because it’s just one of those opportunities where you have to give it a go. It’s been a privilege and an honour to be on the Hillary programme so far and this is a chance to experience another part of the world and get a feel for the culture. Being named a Blackstick has been HOCKEY PLAYER: Brooke’s goal since she started playing Brooke Neal. New Zealand age group hockey with the national Under 16s. She’s already a Junior Blackstick, and being selected for the top national squad was the icing on the cake. Declan Wyndham-Smith, CEO of the Waikato Hockey Association, which is a partner to the Hillary programme, says Brooke is an inspiration to younger players. Natalie is studying a conjoint degree combining a Bachelor of Management Studies and a Bachelor of Law. An avid snowboarder, Natalie is looking forward to travelling to Nepal. “It’s something that I always wanted to do and I really aimed for the award this year. I’m excited to go to Nepal and see what Sir Edmund Hillary started in the community.” For Brooke Neal, hockey is in the blood. Coming from a family that’s heavily involved in the sport, it’s no surprise this Hillary scholar was recently named in the national Blacksticks squad. “Last year I was selected into the Blacksticks development squad and in March this year I got pushed up to the national squad.” Natalie Good “I applied for the award because it was such a fantastic opportunity to go overseas and it’s not something that I would pass up. I want to experience what Sir Ed created in Nepal and see first-hand the impact one person had on the community.” Olympic Games in sight for new Blackstick player The Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship CRICKETER: Steven Rae. “I’m looking forward to seeing the work Sir Edmund Hillary has done and the influence he had on the people there. The whole experience will be inspirational.” Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarships are Waikato University’s most prestigious scholarships and are awarded to students who are high academic achievers who are also achieving in the arts or sports and demonstrate leadership skills. Scholars have their course fees covered, receive specialist coaching and physical conditioning and take part in personal development and leadership programmes. 2013 Sir Edmund Hillary Scholars
