Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Newsletter
Inspiring excellence, all-round development and leadership
August 2014
From the Vice-Chancellor Roy Crawford
Although we have just passed the halfway mark for 2014, we have already seen a great deal of success
among our Hillary scholars.
Eight current and former
Hillary scholars have been
named as competitors in
this year’s Commonwealth Games, representing
New Zealand in athletics, badminton, netball
and shooting. This is a great achievement for our
students who work hard to balance their studies
with their sport.
As part of developing and fostering sport
scholars, the University has established a high
performance gym based at UniRec – our oncampus recreational and gym facility.
Developed in conjunction with the Department
of Sport and Leisure Studies, the gym, equipped
with world-class strength and power training
equipment, provides a unique teaching space
for Sport and Leisure Studies students and adds
to the training outcomes of Hillary scholars and
high performing athletes.
Our creative and performing arts scholars have
also been very successful. Earlier this year one
of our music scholars, Paul Newton-Jackson,
was awarded the Girdlers’ Scholarship valued

at £25,000 per year to study at Cambridge
University. Paul, who is currently studying
a conjoint degree in engineering and music
at the University of Waikato, will head to
Cambridge in September to study at the Corpus
Christi College.
Our music, creative and performing arts
scholars are preparing for their annual
Hillary Showcase – a programme of music
contributions, collaborative work, creative
work, and performances. It is always good
to see the talents of our scholars showcased
to the public, and this will be a great
opportunity for them to perform in front of a
live audience.
As part of the Hillary programme our scholars
have the opportunity to apply for a Step
Higher Award. The Step Higher Awards, which
give four scholars annually the chance to
travel to Khumbu Valley in Nepal, are given
to students who demonstrate exceptional
leadership qualities. This year’s Step Higher
recipients are Jeremy Mayall (PhD (Mus),
Blaire White (BMus), Kristie Baillie (BSocSc) and
Tim Stewart (BMS).
The Wallace Corporation University of Waikato
Blues Awards are another opportunity for us to
celebrate student success, particularly in the
areas of sport, and creative and performing arts.
Held each year, the Blues Awards celebrate the
commitment and achievements of students and
acknowledge their contribution to the University.
Dating back to 1971, the Blues Awards are
one of the University’s strongest traditions.
Looking ahead, we are excited to celebrate the
10th Anniversary of the Sir Hillary Scholarship
Programme in 2015. Since 2005, the programme
has helped educate future leaders at this
University while fostering their skills within
their discipline. This will be a very important
occasion for us, particularly as the 50th
celebrations for the University come to a close
later this year.

Shuttling to Commonwealth glory
Several current and former Hillary scholars are looking to take a place on the
podium at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and it looks like
badminton is the sport to get them there.
Siblings Susannah and Oliver LeydonDavis, along with alumni Joe Wu, Madeleine
Stapleton, and Michael Fowke – a 2013 Hillary
Medal recipient – will represent New Zealand
at the games.
Waikato Badminton CEO TJ Weistra says the
partnership between Waikato Badminton
and the Hillary Scholarship Programme is a
testament to the success of these players.
“These five athletes have worked extremely
hard over the past 10 years when the Waikato
Badminton High Performance programme
started. The support from the University of
Waikato in the form of Hillary scholarships
when they left high school has been a key
component in their drive to succeed on the
international stage.
“Without that partnership it would have been
extremely difficult for them to maintain the
right balance between elite sport and their
academic career. Waikato Badminton is
extremely proud of them and congratulates
them on having achieved selection for the
games in Glasgow.”
Oliver will be competing in the team event
and men’s doubles, as well as the mixed
doubles in the individual event. Susannah will
be competing in the team event and women's
doubles, as well as the mixed doubles in the
team event. Michael Fowke will be competing
in the team event and men’s singles in the
individual event, and Madeleine will compete
in the women's doubles and the mixed
doubles in the individual event.
50th NZ Girdlers' Scholarship Award
Paul Newton-Jackson (pictured), a first-year music student and Sir
Edmund Hillary Scholar at the University of Waikato, was the 50th
New Zealander to be awarded the Girdlers’ Scholarship to study at
Cambridge University’s Corpus Christi College.
Paul says the opportunity to study Music
Composition at Cambridge will be a
“life-changing experience” and he hopes the
connections he makes at university will enable
him to bring the music of young New Zealand
composers to international audiences.
academic ability and is a talented and
creative musician who is humble about
his achievements. He also has a strong
work ethic and has been involved in a wide
range of school and community activities
demonstrating his excellent leadership skills.”
A former pupil of St Paul’s Collegiate School in
Hamilton, Paul says he aims to become heavily
involved in the creation and promotion of
music in New Zealand.
Paul says the music course offered at
Cambridge, which includes weekly composers’
workshops, will be intensive yet rewarding.
“My dream occupation would be to compose
music professionally, while mentoring and
supporting younger writers.”
The Girdlers’ Scholarship is valued at £25,000
per year and is funded by the Girdlers’
Company in the United Kingdom, a craftsman’s
guild founded in medieval times. In 1952,
the company decided to grant an award to
a young outstanding New Zealander every
three years, with the award becoming an
annual one from 1969.
“We had an excellent list of candidates to
choose from and are thrilled with Paul’s very
well-deserved selection,” says the Clerk of
the Girdlers’ Company Brigadier Ian Rees,
who visited New Zealand from the United
Kingdom to commemorate the scholarships
50-year milestone. “Paul has extraordinary
“Cambridge was the first university in the
world to offer a dedicated music qualification,
so it’s the ultimate university for an
academic musician.”
Paul plays the piano, pipe organ, electric
guitar, bass guitar and percussion. While
he enjoys performing music, his first love is
composition – an interest that began when
he attended a young musicians’ mentorship
initiative at the University of Waikato.
In 2013, Paul received his school’s most
prestigious prize, the Seaville trophy, for his
extensive contribution to school activities.
He was Deputy Head Boy, captained the
table-tennis team and was strongly involved
in drama and music.
Paul will head to Cambridge in October
where he will be ably supported by the
Girdlers’ Company.
Art Thou Arty? – Scholar's Hillary showcase
Creative and performing arts Hillary scholars from the University of Waikato will
offer an entertainment spectacle as they perform their showcase, Art Thou Arty?
The August showcase is an
opportunity for Sir Edmund Hillary
scholars to work collaboratively
with peers and share their talents
with the public.
A key feature in this year’s
programme is the collaborative
work between musicians, dancers,
singers, theatre artists, Māori
performing artists, graphic artists
and screen and media artists.
They drew inspiration for their
piece from Late Song – a poem by
New Zealand poet Lauris Edmond.
Director of the collaborative piece and Senior
Lecturer in Sport and Leisure Studies, Dr Karen
Barbour, says the piece will be a “wonderfully
rich expressive performance.”
"Scholars in performing and creative arts are
deeply engaged in their own arts practices.
This project provides an opportunity to extend
their skills to include collaboration and to
broaden their understandings
of performance beyond their
familiar practices.
“Composer and 2007 Hillary
medallist Jeremy Mayall has
responded to the poem with
a new musical composition
written with specific scholars
in mind and including sections
for choreography, spoken work
and theatrical development.
Bringing these talented students
together in the creative process
is very exciting.”
The Hillary Scholars Showcase will take place
at 7pm, Sunday 3 August at the Gallagher
Academy of Performing Arts in the Gallagher
Concert Chamber. Tickets cost $10 and can
be purchased pre-sale from Greg O'Carroll
at [email protected] or at the door
on the night. Half of the revenue from ticket
sales will be donated to The Himalayan Trust.
Waikato opens high
performance gym
Hillary scholars will now be able to
enhance their training regimes and
improve competition performances by
taking advantage of the University of
Waikato’s new high performance gym
and sports testing laboratory.
Equipped with world-class strength and power
training equipment, the high performance
gym – based in the on-campus gym UniRec
– was established in conjunction with
the University’s Sport and Leisure Studies
department to provide a unique teaching space
for Sport and Leisure Studies students, and
add to the training outcomes of Hillary scholars
and other high performing athletes at the
University of Waikato.
The high performance facility is a
complementary outfit for the University
of Waikato Sport Science lab based at the
Avantidrome in Cambridge.
Four University staff drive the Sports Testing
Laboratory at the Avantidrome; sports scientist
Dr Brett Smith, sports physiologists Dr Matt
Driller and Joe McQuillan, and skill acquisition
specialist Professor Rich Masters who has
recently joined Waikato from the University
of Hong Kong. Athletes can be tested on many
aspects including current baseline fitness and
exercise economy, which is then analysed and
used to set training intensities.
The Hillary Scholarship programme will work
with sport partners, coaches and scholars to
integrate these two world-class resources into
their training programmes. The University’s
goal is to support up-and-coming athletes by
providing them with tools that will allow them
to achieve success at the highest level in their
respective sports.
For further information about the University
of Waikato’s Sports Science Laboratory, or to
book a test, please contact Sport Science Lab
Manager Joe McQuillan on 027 4295 140 or

High achievers going even higher
Four high achieving students will be going to Nepal at the end of the year as recipients
of the University of Waikato’s Step Higher Awards.
Step Higher Awards are open to Sir Edmund
Hillary scholars. They are awarded to four
participants per year who excel academically as
well as in their sport or creative or performing
art, and who show strength in leadership.
The 2014 recipients are doctoral candidate and
composer Jeremy Mayall, soprano and Bachelor
of Music student Blaire White, middle-distance
runner Timothy Stewart who is studying for a
Bachelor of Management Studies and Kristie
Baillie, a Commonwealth Games 4 x 400 relay
squad member who is studying for a Bachelor of
Social Sciences (Hons).
This will be the third group of Hillary scholars
to visit the region. Scholarship winners go to
the Khumbu Valley in Nepal where they get to
see the work started by Sir Edmund Hillary and
work on projects run by the Himalayan Trust.

“We support the Hillary Step Higher
Programme as part of our commitment
to excellence. The Hillary Programme is unique
in New Zealand and focuses on three qualities
we know also deliver the best results in our
business – leadership, a strong knowledge base
and an active life. With a shared set of values
with Waikato University, the Compass Group
intends to support this programme throughout
our partnership,” says Mr de Vries.
2015 is a special year for us as we mark the 10th anniversary of the Sir Edmund
Hillary Programme. Established in 2005, the scholarship programme has helped
inspire excellence, all round development and leadership among recipients.
Michelle Jordan-Tong, Head of Student
and Academic Services, says the Hillary
Scholarship is unique to Waikato in that its
focus is three-pronged – academic, sports or
arts, and leadership.
“We have worked hard to ensure the students
who are awarded the scholarships are given
every opportunity to excel. We’re continually
refining what we can offer, and developing new
partnerships with sporting and arts organisations
to expand opportunities for students. The Step
Higher Award is just one example.”
Michelle says, at Sir Ed’s instigation, students
are required to have a personal purpose that
The degree involves study at three
universities – eight weeks each at De Montfort
University (UK) to study humanities of sport,
the University of Bocconi in Milan for marketing
management and finance and at the University
of Neuchâtel in Switzerland where she’ll be
studying law. She’ll become a student again after
the Rowing World Championships in August.
The FIFA Master is awarded by the International
Centre for Sport Studies (CIES) with the
objective of strengthening the links between the
students of the FIFA/CIES Programme in Sport
Management and the FIFA Master.
Rod de Vries, director of operations for the
Compass Group, says the scholarships are a
good fit with his organisation.
Hillary scholarship programme turns 10 next year
With the purpose of educating future leaders,
the scholarship’s values reflect that of
New Zealand’s greatest adventurer, Sir
Edmund Hillary.
International rower Emma Twigg will
have her head in text books when she’s
not rowing over the next year.
The single sculler and Waikato graduate is one
of 30 people selected for the FIFA Masters
in Sports Management, selected from 300
applicants worldwide.
The awards are sponsored by the Compass
Group, the company that supplies the catering
services to the University’s halls of residence.
The announcement of this year’s Step Higher
Awards coincides with the anniversary of Sir
Edmund Hillary’s conquering of Mt Everest on
29 May. University of Waikato Vice-Chancellor
Professor Roy Crawford says the chosen
students have met the criteria of excellence
in their academic work, leadership and their
specialist field. “But more than that, they
have also expressed a desire to share their
skills and experiences with their community
and contribute to their communities in many
positive ways. They are also required to
contribute to the Himalayan Trust.”
Hillary Alumna snags

defines and refines what they stand for and
they’re expected to contribute to their local
communities. It’s a balance which requires
hard work from scholars but they are
supported by mentors within the programme.
“The University is flexible in accommodating
students with off-campus sporting and arts
commitments, but we know our national
and international reps spend time studying
in their motel and hotel rooms across the
world,” she adds.
The University will officially celebrate the
10-year anniversary of the Sir Edmund Hillary
Scholarship Programme on Saturday 23
May 2015. Hillary scholar alumni who would
