Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship Newsletter
Inspiring excellence, all-round development and leadership
Hillary Scholarship
Programme celebrates
10 year anniversary
This year, with a number of events
and celebrations scheduled to
take place, scholars, partners,
supporters and contributors of
the programme will have the
opportunity to commemorate what
has been a successful initiative for
developing future leaders.
Established in 2005, the Sir Edmund Hillary
Scholarship Programme has helped inspire
excellence and all-round development
and leadership among students, with the
scholarship’s underpinning values reflecting
those of New Zealand’s greatest adventurer,
Sir Edmund Hillary.
Michelle Jordan-Tong, Head of Student
and Academic Services, says the Hillary
Scholarship is unique to Waikato University
in that its focus is three-pronged – academic,
sports or arts, and leadership.
“We have worked hard to ensure the
students who are awarded the scholarships
are given every opportunity to excel. We’re
continually refining what we can offer,
and developing new partnerships with
sporting and arts organisations to expand
opportunities for students. The Step Higher
Award is just one example.”
Initiatives to celebrate the 10-year
anniversary include specialised scholar and
graduate scholar pins, a video history of
the scholarship including scholar footage,
and a 10-year anniversary emphasis on the
annual events scheduled for Hillary scholars,
including Purpose Day and leadership
development.
An official event to celebrate the 10-year
anniversary will take place on Saturday
23 May at the University. All current Hillary
scholars, Hillary alumni and contributors
to the programme are invited. Those
interested in attending should contact the
High Performance Student Manager on

March 2015
From the Vice-Chancellor
As the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Waikato, it is my
pleasure to officially welcome new and returning Sir Edmund
Hillary scholars to the University of Waikato for 2015.
Having spent just over
a month in my new role
as Vice-Chancellor, I
am quickly coming to
appreciate the breadth
and quality of the work
being undertaken at the
University of Waikato, and the impressive level
of student achievement that is led by our Sir
Edmund Hillary scholars.
The Sir Edmund Hillary Programme is an
outstanding programme designed to support
new and current students wishing to develop
their skills in leadership and sport or the
creative and performing arts. This year marks
the 10th anniversary of the Sir Edmund Hillary
Programme which, since 2005, has been
fostering the most talented young people in
New Zealand, including international musicians,
composers and vocalists, and national and
international sporting champions. I look forward
to being involved with the 10-year anniversary
events this year, as well as the Sir Edmund Hillary
Scholarship Programme over the coming years.
The University continues to take a strategic
approach to high performance sport by increasing
the number of partnerships and ties it has
with local and national sporting organisations.
Last year we signed agreements with the
Chiefs, Midlands Hockey, Bike New Zealand
and Triathlon New Zealand. I am sure we will
continue with the same approach this year with
developing relationships in the sporting arena.
The incredible talent pool among the student
body at the University of Waikato extends
also to music and art. This talent includes
accomplished pianist and former student
Andrew Leathwick, who was recently accepted
into the Australian National Academy of Music
(ANAM), and soprano Beverly Pullon who is the
University’s first Doctor of Musical Arts and
just one of two people in New Zealand to have
the qualification.
I thank the sponsors of the Sir Edmund Hillary
Programme, Calder and Lawson Orbit Corporate
Travel, Compass Group, ULeisure and our
sporting partners and arts advisers for their
for their continued support in making this
programme a successful initiative.

Scholars see work of Sir Ed first-hand
The altitudes are high, the temperatures
are low, and every day requires four
to six hours of trekking. Braving the
elements through the Khumbu Valley
as part of the Step Higher trip isn’t an
easy feat, but it’s an experience that
won’t be forgotten.
Located 4800m above sea level in the middle
of Nepal lies Khumbu Valley – home for three
weeks to four Hillary scholars.
In 2014, composer Jeremy Mayall, soprano
and music student Blaire White, middle
distance runner Timothy Stewart, and 2014
Commonwealth Games 4 x 400 relay squad
member Kristie Baillie became recipients of
the Step Higher Award – a chance for Hillary
scholars to travel to Nepal and see first-hand
the work that Sir Ed started.
Sponsored by Compass Group, the company that
supplies catering services to the University’s
Halls of Residence, the awards are given to
Hillary scholars who not only excel academically
but who express a desire to share their skills and
contribute to the community.
One way the Hillary scholars contribute to the
community is by fundraising for the Himalayan
Trust through events such as the annual Hillary
bake sale and movie night. Before heading to
Nepal, the Step Higher recipients did their own
fundraising. Overall a total of $15,000 for the
Trust was raised.
Kristie approached the fundraising in a unique
way by climbing Mt Te Aroha four times.
“Being that Sir Edmund Hillary is the sole
STEP HIGHER TRIP: (L-R) Professor Kay Weaver, Blaire White, Jeremy Mayall,
Timothy Stewart, Kristie Baillie and their guide Dennis Casa Shrestha.
reason I am here, I wanted to do something
that aligned with who he is and what he has
done,” Kristie says. “Going out and climbing
Mt Te Aroha four times in 48-hours with my
mum – which equals the total height of Mt
Everest – seemed a great way to engage local
community support and raise funds for the
Himalayan Trust. It was a rewarding experience
and provided merely a taste of what was yet to
come during our fantastic adventures in Nepal.”
Magic recovery for young netball star
It was a bitter-sweet end to 2014 for new Hillary scholar and recently signed Magic
player Kelly Jury, but the young star shows no signs of stopping.
In August last year, while finishing her final year
at New Plymouth Girls’ High School, Kelly got
the call to say she’d been signed to the WaikatoBay of Plenty Magic netball team.
But the good news quickly turned to bad
when a day after the call, Kelly ruptured an
Achilles tendon.
“As soon as the injury occurred, I remember
looking up to my parents and being in disbelief
thinking ‘is this seriously happening right now?’
BOUNCING BACK: New Hillary scholar and
recently signed Magic player, Kelly Jury, is
bouncing back from injury ready for the
season ahead.
“I had gone from a major high to a devastating
low, but thankfully my injury didn’t affect my
signing to the team. Looking back from this
point, I’m actually surprised at how well I dealt
with the situation and feel that I’ve become
mentally stronger because of it.”
Not one to be stopped by the set-back, Kelly is
working closely with the team physiotherapist
and strength and conditioning trainer to make
sure she bounces back. She’s currently working
in the gym five days a week and participates in
team trainings as much as possible.
“I’m still involved in everything and still travel
with the team. Just recently we went to Sydney
for a pre-season tournament and the first game
of the season is set for February 28 in Adelaide.”
Kelly is one of this year’s new Hillary scholars,
and has just begun studying a Bachelor of
Sport and Leisure Studies. She looks forward
to the busy year ahead with studies, leadership
development as part of the Sir Edmund Hillary
Scholarship Programme, and training.
“I’m looking forward to gaining leadership skills
and meeting a lot of new people. As for my
sport, I’m looking forward to just getting out
onto the court again and all the experiences I’m
going to have with the Magic team in the ANZ
Championships.”
Motivational
adventurer
inspires future
leaders
Waikato University alumnus Jamie
Fitzgerald gave an inspirational
speech to Hillary scholars about
his business successes and extreme
adventures.
Jamie, who graduated with a Bachelor of
Communication Studies in 2005, gave
insights from his experiences trekking to
the South Pole, rowing across the Atlantic,
being a front man for the TVNZ series First
Crossings, and running his own management
consultancy.
The talk came as part of the Hillary
programme’s annual leadership development,
an opportunity for scholars to hear from
inspirational keynote speakers. Scholars
were undoubtedly impressed with the tips
and tools given by the famous alumnus.
“I really enjoyed his speech. Setting
milestones and understanding how powerful
progress is as a motivator was a great idea
that I took away,” says Tim Stewart, Hillary
scholar for athletics.
“The fact that he was able to link it to our
personal purpose made it even more relevant
to us.”
Last year, Jamie was awarded a Distinguished
Alumni Award for his successes, mainly
that of his business Inspiring Performance,
helping individuals, groups and organisations
strategise goals and achieve them.
The University of Waikato Distinguished
Alumni Awards celebrate and honour
graduates of the University of Waikato who
have achieved throughout their careers, taking
into account excellence in the professional,
cultural, creative and voluntary sectors.
Hillary alumna
gets vocal
It can be a hard job singing all day long,
and sometimes, for weeks on end, but for
Hillary alumna and soprano Julia Booth
it’s a walk in the park.
Julia, who graduated with a Master of Music, has
been busy the last year with vocal training and
performing. Last May she was the star performer
in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the
Opera, playing the lead character of Christine.
“My worst fear was driving the boat into the
orchestra pit. Thankfully it behaved! It was a
brilliant show to be a part of. Quite literally an
opportunity of a lifetime.”
Following that, Julia spent three and a half weeks
in London to further her training within the
Estill Voice Training System. After eight years of
study, she is now a Certified Master Teacher, one
of only two in New Zealand.
This year, Julia took to the stage again in another
musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tell Me on a
Sunday and was a soloist with the TWSO at
Sunset Symphony, both part of this year’s
Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival.
Julia lectures voice at WINTEC, Canterbury
University and St Peter’s School in Cambridge
and is voice consultant to occupational voice
users from her private studio.
2014 Hillary
Medal recipients
International snowboarder Natalie Good
and clarinettist Nathaniel Smorti have
been named Hillary Medal recipients –
a highly prestigious award given to top
Hillary scholars.
Two Hillary Medals are awarded each year, one
for sports and the other for the top arts scholar.
To be eligible for the medal, Hillary scholars
must demonstrate a high level of academic
achievement, a very high level of achievement in
either a sporting code, or a performing or creative
art and show exceptional leadership qualities.
Natalie completed a conjoint Bachelor of
Management Studies/Bachelor of Laws degree.
She should be training and competing overseas,
but she broke her leg while training on the
slopes in northern Japan and has come home to
Cambridge while her leg mends.
In 2013 she was the first New Zealander in
history to win a gold medal at the World Winter
Universiade games, which rank second only
to the Winter Olympics, when she won the
slopestyle finals in Trentino, Italy, ahead of two
Swiss competitors.
INSPIRING LEADERSHIP: Adventurer
and Waikato alumnus, Jamie Fitzgerald,
was the keynote speaker at the Hillary
leadership development day recently.
SUPER SOPRANO: Hillary alumna Julia
Booth has been busy with vocal training
and performing.
“It’s great to win the Hillary medal,” Natalie
says, “And my injury has got me thinking it
might be time to start thinking about a job,
either in finance or law. I guess it will depend on
my recovery and how the next year pans out. I
still have the 2018 Winter Olympics in my sights
and will be there if I can.”
Nathaniel Smorti is returning to Waikato this
year to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in
HILLARY MEDALLISTS: Nathaniel Smorti and
Natalie Good.
Music Performance, but will spend much of the
winter in Europe as he works toward becoming
an international musician.
Nathaniel graduated with honours from Lake
Taupo Christian School at age 14, winning the
top academic and musical awards. After high
school, Nathaniel spent a gap year volunteering
as a teacher aide in Santo, Vanuatu.
During his first year at Waikato University, he
topped second-year economics and several
other papers. A switch to music has seen him
performing on a national and international level
in orchestral, chamber and soloist performance
– most notably a second place at the Sydney
Eisteddfod Chamber Music Competition and
third at the National Concerto Competition.
In addition to his studies, Nathaniel is heavily
involved in numerous community organisations
as a teacher, coach, organiser and conductor.
“I am truly humbled to have been awarded
the Hillary Medal. When I started my musical
pursuits at Waikato I applied three times to
become a Hillary Scholar. The input of my
mentors, parents, friends and university staff,
and the opportunities available here at Waikato
have been instrumental in me standing here as
the person and musician I am today.”
