Statement of Purpose
Increasingly, the University of Akron’s off-campus students’ needs are becoming more complex. As
university staff members have responded to students’ needs, gaps in service to students have been
identified.
The purpose of this manual is to provide professionals in Off-Campus Student Services with relevant
resources to assist their target population. Each resource, agency, program, and website listed offers
services which can be useful tools in assisting student-victims, non-traditional students, off-campus
students, and others with specific needs. This manual is meant to provide for the campus community’s
growing and changing needs, therefore professionals are encouraged to add to or remove content from
this manual over time as programs change.
How to Use this Manual
This Manual is organized to help you successfully navigate comprehensive information. Each section is
titled in congruency to listed services. Each section of the Manual may stand alone (as quick reference,
for example) but should be read from beginning to end in its entirety before being used. All information
in this manual is accurate and up-to-date as of December 2013.
Special Requirements & Considerations for Service
In sections of the manual which utilize a grid or table, a section following the table is meant to be used
as a key to corresponding numbers in the table. If you identify an appropriate shelter for a homeless
student, for example, and a number is listed in the final column (“Special Requirements?”) please use
the Shelter sections “Special Requirements” key to determine if the student is eligible for services.
Shelters
This table may be used to compare multiple shelters at once, or to identify specifics of eligibility and
qualifications for each agency. No student should ever show up to a shelter and expect to be served.
Being disqualified or ineligible for services may be prevented by identifying these important facts ahead
of time. While this information is up-to-date, it is still necessary for clients to call ahead to utilize
shelters’ services.
Pantries & Food Resources
This table may be used to compare multiple pantries, hot meals, and distribution sites at once, or to
identify specifics of eligibility and qualification for each agency. No student should ever show up to a
pantry and expect to be served. Services, supplies, and meals are often offered on a ‘first come, first
served’ basis, and locations (as well as hours of operation) may change. While this information is upto-date, it is still necessary for clients to call ahead to utilize pantries’ services.
Day Care & Preschool
The day care centers listed in this table are generally located in Greater Akron (West Akron, Green,
Tallmadge, and so on). Most of the centers listed accept Title XX funds for service. Please assist the
client in contacting a location which may be convenient for them.
Non-Traditional Student Resources
The resources listed in this section are different from the previous sections’ but only represent a fraction
of services offered in Akron which may assist students with specific, unique needs. The agencies listed
have been identified as useful in particular to students who make use of Off-Campus Student Services’
programs and services. Professionals are encouraged to add to this section as new needs of students
are identified.

Special Requirements & Considerations for Service
-1. No funds for homeless or emergency shelter for this fiscal year—check resources in 2014.
2. Families—however the client defines that (married, unmarried, mixed gender couple, samesex couple, etc…)—must have at least ONE child; an appointment must be made over the
phone to qualify for shelter stay. Please note that there is almost always a waiting list so
calling ahead of time is essential.
3. This is a sobriety shelter that has detoxification and addiction treatment options available
for its guests.
4. This is a day center for single men and women; women staying in Harvest Home or single
people from community may come to participate in services.
5. A call to the Canton Homeless Hotline must be made for a valid referral to Refuge of Hope—
there are no direct call-ins to the number provided.
6. The primary building and offices of the Salvation Army are located within 5 miles of campus
on Hall Street in West Akron, near Krispy Kreme’s Donuts and Glendale Cemetery—the
location of Booth Manor is private and undisclosed.
7. Seek primary care provider for a referral (should be referred to Pat James Stewart). Tell
your provider “I’m dealing with a situation of homelessness” unless already enrolled in the
VA.

prepare low-English proficient pre-school immigrant and refugee children in
Summit county for successful entry into kindergarten. The program

birth to kindergarten). At present, READY primarily serves “high need”
refugees from Myanmar (formerly Burma) who were relocated from United
Nations camps and now reside in the University Park and North Hill
neighborhoods of Summit County. The READY Program uses the nationally
recognized, evidenced-based Parents As Teachers (PAT) curriculum, which
