EXAMPLE
This research was inspired by the following problem in demography.
Macmana1ytic studies of the relative role of dev,e10pment variables in
fertility change are usually based on cross-sectional aggregate data
for multiple countries.
Various statistical techniques are applied in
an attempt to study fertility determinants.
Ornran and Salama (1980) drew
attention to the point that the countries involved in the study may
belong to different transition models, among which the dynamics of
fertility (and mortality) change may vary.
The models referred to in
this study are as described by the epidemiologic transition theory of
Ornran (1971 and 1977).
In that theory, several transition models are
identified and characterized according to the pace and dynamics of
mortality and fertility change in different societal settings.
The
classical model represents the health and demographic transition in
western societies over the last two centuries.
A variant of this model
was described for Japan and several eastern European countries where
fertility decline was accelerated (by induced abortion:
"accelerated model" for the epidemiologic transition).

developed countries, the mortality transition was delayed until well
into the twentieth century, while fertility maintained high levels.
A variant of this, the "delayed model" for the transition, is described
for a number of less developed countries where fertility started to decline
in the mid 1960's and/or thereafter.
This last model will be referred to
as the "transitional" variant of the delayed model.
The data used in the study (Ornran and Salama, 1980) involved 22
variables representing different socioeconomic factors affecting fertility.
