New Veteran Student Checklist
1. Links and Forms for applying for VA benefits, Financial Aid, and Registration can
be accessed by going to the Veteran Center web page.

2. All Required Documentation must be submitted together before VA processing
can occur. The list of required documents is listed in Section 6 of this checklist.

1. Enrollment Process:
Apply for VA Education Benefits: Applying for VA benefits can be done on line or by filling out a PDF form. Go to
http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/ Log in or create an account. Complete and submit a form 22-1900 or 22-5490 to
VA. A letter of Eligibility should be mailed to you within 30 days after your application is processed. Transfer students
should submit a form 22-1995 or 22-5495 Change of Place of Training Form using the link above. Contact the Veteran
Center if you have questions or need assistance.
Apply for admission to San Juan College: Go to www.sanjuancollege.edu/apply to apply on line for free, or fill out the
paper application. The $10 Fee is waived for veterans. It is important to self-Identify your military status on your
application.
Request Official Transcripts: from your high school/GED, all colleges you have attended, and from military branch of
service. For all service branches except USAF go to https://jst.doded.mil/smart/signIn.do . For USAF transcripts go to
http://www.au.af.mil/au/barnes/ccaf/transcripts.asp. Send transcripts to Enrollment Services, 4601 College Blvd.
Farmington, NM 87402 OR [email protected]. (Electronically sent transcripts MUST come through a
secure email with a password required to access.
Apply for Financial Aid: All students should complete FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application even
if you think you may not qualify. Go to www.fafsa.gov to apply. Call the Financial Aid Office at (505)-566-3323 or visit
www.sanjuancollege.edu/financialaid for more information.
Apply for Military Tuition Rate: (Students with Out of State Residency Only) Complete the Military Tuition Rate
Request Form (See Last Page of Checklist). Request forms must be sent with all required documents to Enrollment
Services at [email protected] or the Veteran Center at [email protected] by the Friday prior to
the start of classes. Effective July 1, 2015 all active duty, veterans, and their spouses are eligible to receive in state
tuition. Dependent Children will be granted Instate tuition if using VA Educational Benefit Programs or have a current
military Identification Card.
Veteran Upward Bound Program (VUB): The VUB program is a TRIO program designed to assist veterans in their first
and second semesters. Eligibility requirements must be met in order to participate in the program. Contact Chris Bodley

Get your Student ID card at the Admissions & Records Office: Your first ID card is FREE. Replacement cards are $5.00.
You will use your ID card at the campus Bookstore, Library, HHPC, Mary’s Kitchen and to print from the campus
computer labs. Note: Student ID cards are not available for Distance Learning students.
Complete the Accuplacer: The Accuplacer tests your basic level of knowledge in Math, Reading, and English to
determine which classes you will be best suited for. Students must schedule appointments on line at
http://www.sanjuancollege.edu/test. Your first assessment is free. Transfer Students who have completed a college
level English and Math with a passing grade of “C” or better do not need to take the Accuplacer. (Must be verified
through Official Transcripts and evaluated)
Attend a New Student Orientation: Attending Orientation is required for all First Time Freshman; transfer students may
be encouraged to complete one by their advisor. Times and dates for NSO offerings are available through the Student
Achievement Center. To get registered for a session either face-to-face or online please call (505)-566-3378 or email
[email protected].
MySJC Portal Logon: MySJC is the San Juan College portal that connects you to the SJC community, to your SJC email, to
your documents, and access Web Advisor (used to register). To enter the portal, go to mysjc.sanjuancollege.edu. From
there, follow the instructions to log on.
SJC Username and Password: Username: first initial, middle initial, last name and the last 2 digits of your Social
Security Number. Password: sjcp then the last four digits of your student ID number.
Setup Student Email: Students are responsible for activating their student email and for checking emails on a consistent
basis. Your email address is [email protected]. Your username is the username outlined for you above.
You can log in at http://outlook.live.com with your email address and your INITIAL password outlined above.
2. Register for Courses:
Academic Advising: Students with less than 24 credit hours must meet with an Academic Advisor prior to registering
for courses. To avoid waiting in line please schedule an appointment with your advisor. Contact the Advising and
Counseling Center at 505-566-3404 or email [email protected].
Class Registration: Student must use the Student Academic Planning Tool in order to register for classes. The planning
tool can be found by logging onto your web advisor. Contact Advising and Counseling for further guidance and
information regarding the planning tool at 505-566-3107 or [email protected]. Only required courses
can be certified for GI Bill funding. Any registered classes not required for graduation will not be certified. (VA
Guidelines state that developmental courses taken online will not be certified)
3. Veteran Student Responsibilities:
Pay your tuition: Veterans using their VA educational benefits will be held in classes by the Certifying Official to allow
your VA education benefits to be processed. Students are responsible for making arrangements to pay your tuition if not
using VA Benefits. Students who fail to submit certification paperwork or make payment arrangements will be
dropped for nonpayment. Please check the current schedule or website for information concerning tuition dates and
deadlines. Tuition can be paid by phone 505-566-3396, in person at the business office, or online at
webadvisor.sanjuancollege.edu.
Purchase textbooks: Students are responsible for purchasing text books. As a courtesy to our veterans and dependents
using GI Bill, you may set up book charging through the Business Office. Contact the Veteran Center for information.
Students must pay off all charges in order to register for their next semester.
Find your classroom- Locate your classroom / verify access and system requirements for CANVAS prior to the first day.

Read the SJC Catalog- Know your rights and responsibilities as a SJC student and find information about programs,
courses and policies. Available online at www.sanjuancollege.edu/catalog
Notify the Veteran Center of ANY changes. It is important to report any changes that occur over the course of the
semester. (This includes, but is not limited to adding/dropping classes or changing your degree plan. Failure to report
changes in your enrollment could result in overpayments by VA and or debts to the Business Office.
Chapter 30 Verify your enrollment. As a VA requirement, you must verify the amount of credit hours you are taking.
This must be done on the last working day of each month that you attend school. (This process allows the VA to

San Juan College Military Tuition Rates are granted in compliance of Senate Bill No. 35 and the Veterans Choice Act of 2014.
