Suite by Tylman Susato The University of Akron Brass Choir *Presentation of candidates are in the order of college founding date. three Academic Processional & Ceremonial Customs The pageantry of commencement is rooted in traditions that are centuries old. The following information is designed to assist you in understanding the significance of these ceremonial rites. Processional The academic processional is an official prelude to the commence ment ceremony. The University marshal leads the procession, bearing the University Mace, which represents the authority of both the University and of the state. Following the University marshal are the members of the platform party including trustees, recipient(s) of honorary degrees, and the president of the University, who wears a medal lion with inscriptions represent ing the history of the state and the University. Next come the members of the faculty followed by the degree candidates. The marching order of candidates customarily reflects the historical order in which the various colleges or schools of the University were established. Led by marshals, the candidates for degrees march in with their respective colleges. Academic Attire The academic regalia worn at commencement is of medieval origin. The scholars of Bologna, Paris, Oxford, Cambridge, and Heidelberg dressed in a manner to distinguish themselves from the merchants and other townsmen. When the universities first came into being in the 11th century, “learned clerks” robed themselves in gowns, caps, and hoods, thus signifying the distinction between “town” and “gown.” As additional universities came into being, their faculties adopted distinctive forms of the gown and hood for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. These customs are reflected in today’s academic attire. In Europe, a professor generally wears the four type of garment customary in the university where he or she is lecturing. In the United States, however, professors wear the gown and hood of the university where they earned their highest degree. All commencement ceremony participants at The University of Akron are attired in the appro priate academic apparel. University marshals are distinguished by their blue and gold robes and Elizabethan caps. Caps and Tassels The cap, also called the mortar board, may have been derived from the squarish cap worn by the masons of the Middle Ages, or perhaps was suggested by the shape of the books which occupied so much of the scholar’s time. In the United States, the cap is usu ally flat and square in shape. In Europe, one sometimes sees caps of other varieties. Attached to a button atop the mortarboard is a tassel; associate’s are often silver in color; bachelor’s and master’s are black or of a color appropri ate to the college from which the candidate is being graduated; and doctor’s are usually golden. Gowns Originally, the gown may simply have been a type of overcoat to protect the teacher from the cold in unheated buildings. The cut or style appears to derive from ecclesiastical attire and most often is black. The associate’s and bachelor’s gowns generally have a closed front and open sleeves. The master’s gown more often has long, closed sleeves, from which the arms extend through a slit at the wrist. The doctor’s gown is faced down the front with velvet panels and has bell-shaped sleeves adorned with three velvet bars. Hoods A triangular fold of cloth worn over the back of the gown, the hood is faced with colors which denote the field of study represented by the wearer’s degree. The colors of the lining indicate the college or academic discipline in which the degree is granted. Recipients of the doctor of philosophy degree wear royal blue hoods, and their caps feature golden tassels. Those who have earned the doctor of education degree wear light blue hoods and tassels. Colors The various colleges and academic disciplines of The University of Akron are represented by the following hood and tassel colors: White Arts and Sciences Drab Business SilverSummit College, Associate’s BlackSummit College, Bachelor’s Light Blue Education Orange Engineering Dark BrownFine and Applied Arts Purple Law Peach Nursing GoldPolymer Science and Polymer Engineering Banners The impressive backdrop for the ceremony consists of the banners of the eleven colleges and the Graduate School. Each banner bears the name, founding date, and traditional colors of the college it represents. Banners were first insti tuted at The University of Akron in the spring of 1995. The University Seal and the Presidential Medallion A seal serves to confirm, ratify, or secure an emblem, symbol, or word that is used to certify a signature or authenticate a document. The use of official seals dates back to the Norman Conquest in 1066. During the next century, seals were used throughout England to authenticate documents. Persons of rank had unique seals befitting their status. Most seals were circular or oval-shaped and bore heraldic designs embossed on their faces. The use of seals became part of academic tradition in the medieval university and continues to the present. The University of Akron, for example, displays its seal on diplomas presented to its graduates. The coat of arms shown on the University’s seal includes an open book and quill, representative of the University’s original liberal arts curriculum. A lamp of learn ing shown against a city skyline depicts the University’s metropoli tan setting. Three diagonal bars represent the private, municipal, and state stages of the University’s history. The phoenix, a mythi cal bird that is consumed by fire and rises from its ashes to achieve greater glory, is a tribute to the University’s rebirth following the devastating fire of 1899. The seal also displays the original Buchtel College motto, Fiat Lux (let there be light). The University’s current Presi dential Medallion, as designed in the year 2000 by renowned art ist Don Drumm, consists of the University seal, set in a necklace of pewter. Originally, the Presidential Medallion was presented by the Alumni Association in 1970, com memorating the University’s cen tennial. The medallion is a symbol of the authority of the president, as bestowed by the Board of Trustees, that traditionally is worn by the president on important ceremonial occasions. Ceremonial Mace University Seal The Ceremonial Mace The Ceremonial Mace was presented to The University of Akron by the Alumni Association on Founders Day 1970, in recognition of the University’s founding 100 years earlier as Buchtel College. Since ancient times, maces have been symbols of authority for many academic and governmental bodies. The University of Akron’s Ceremonial Mace is carried by the University marshal at all formal academic occasions. The most distinguishing feature of the Ceremonial Mace is the ris ing phoenix. A mythical bird that rose anew from its ashes to achieve even greater glory, the phoenix is a fitting symbol for the University whose predecessor, Buchtel College, suffered a disastrous fire in 1899 and was rebuilt through the generous support of alumni and the community. five University Board of Trustees Trustees Student Trustees Officers of the Board Philip S. Kennedy Dr. Joseph P. Kennedy is an internationally renowned polymer scientist whose inventions include life-saving materials and technologies. At the age of 80, Dr. Kennedy works six days a week in his lab, continuing to make contributions to science and our quality of life. A native of Hungary, Josef Kenedi attended the University of Budapest where he earned a bachelor of science in chemistry degree. However, in 1948 the son of Hungarian intellectuals came under suspicion by Communist authorities who ordered him to turn in his personal academic transcript. The young man refused, packed as many belongings as he could carry and hiked for two days to Czechoslovakia, where he caught a train to Austria. Dr. Joseph P. Kennedy earned a doctor of biochemistry degree from the University of Vienna in 1954, and a master of business administration degree from Rutgers University in 1961. He also completed post-doctoral studies at the Sorbonne University in Paris, and McGill University in Montreal. He was active in private industry from 1957 - 1970 as a research chemist for Celanese Corporation and later as a senior research associate for Esso Research and Engineering Co. During his years with Esso, he also served as a guest professor in polymer science at the University of Kyoto, Japan. Dr. Kennedy’s long and inspiring career with The University of Akron began in 1970, as a Distinguished Professor of Polymer Science and of Chemistry. He is a recognized expert of polymer syn thesis and biomaterials, and he led the development of the SIBS copolymer. That material was used in the development of polymer-coated arterial stents that slowly release clot-inhibiting drugs. It also paved the way for drug-eluting polymers in other implantable devices, and the development of new biomaterials for the treatment of diseases ranging from brain cancer to diabetes. Dr. Kennedy’s current research includes elastomeric gels for spinal implants, and an artificial pancreas built upon smart amphiphilic polymer networks. In addition to the thousands of lives that have been saved or improved by the fruits of Dr. Kennedy’s research, his innovations have contributed to the establishment of a $28 billion industry, in cluding the drug-eluting stent market, which was non-existent in 2002 and today is valued at more than $5 billion. Dr. Kennedy is a model of enterprise and productivity for students and his peers, receiving 100 patents from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, contributing to more than 700 publications and four books, editing several scientific journals and organizing a number of international meetings. His achieve ments and reputation have contributed substantially to the great esteem and respect afforded to the University’s polymer science and polymer engineering program. Dr. Kennedy has accrued numerous awards and honors for his work and career, including the Morley Award, Doebereiner Medaille, American Chemical Society (ACS) Award in Polymer Chemistry, George S. Whitby Award, National Science Foundation Special Creativity Award, the Goodyear Medal by the ACS Rubber Division, the Award for Distinguished Service in Polymer Science by the Society of Polymer Science in Japan, and listings in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Frontier Science and Technology, American Men of Science and Hungarian and International Who’s Who. Dr. Kennedy lives in West Akron with his wife, Ingrid. They have three daughters and five grandchildren. nine THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON HONORARY DEGREE R ECIPIENT H T he Honorable Harold F. White will receive the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Judge Harold F. White Judge Harold F. White is a talented jurist whose service to the Akron community extends well beyond his years on the bench. A devoted supporter of this University, Judge White provided students both with the means to an education, and the education itself. Judge White was born in Hartford, Conn., on April 29, 1920. A child of the Depression, Judge White managed a paper route as a teenager and worked his way through college, receiving a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Ohio University in 1947. During World War II, Judge White served for four years in the U.S. Third Army under General George Patton as a combat engineer, during which time he was awarded the Purple Heart and four Battle Stars. Judge White served in the U.S. Army Reserves as a lieutenant colonel until his retirement in 1980. After his discharge from active service, Judge White returned to Ohio. Availing himself of the benefits of the G.I. Bill, Judge White attended The University of Akron School of Law and received a Juris Doctor in 1952. Judge White practiced law and served as a city prosecutor in 1952 and as an assistant county prosecutor in 1956. In May, 1958 he was appointed a referee of bankruptcy and later appointed to the bench. Judge White officially retired in January 1994, but was recalled for service in January 1997. He celebrated his 40th anniversary as Judge, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of Ohio, in 1998 and has had the distinction of being the most senior bankruptcy judge in the United States. He presently serves as a mediator to the Bankruptcy Court. Judge White brought to the bankruptcy bench a sense of Yankee frugality and Depression-era work ethos, yet he was well known for the respect and dignity he afforded to debtors who appeared before him. A devoted coupon clipper and bargain hunter, Judge White also displayed a wry wit. A sign in his law office read, “Totum Pretrim Pro Cista Frumenti Ne Solveris Umquam,” which translates to: “You should never pay full price for a box of cereal.” In 1999, he was named to the Ohio State Bar Foundation Fellows Class, which is an honor given to individuals who demonstrate dedication to the highest ideals of the legal profession and to the welfare of their community. Judge White served as an adjunct professor in the School of Law for 26 years, and in 1988 was honored as the John R. Quine Adjunct Professor of Law. In 2004, he received the Sir Thomas More Award bestowed annually by the Bishop of the Cleveland Diocese of the Catholic Church and the Akron Bar Association. Judge White has been a member of the National Alumni Board and received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the School of Law in 1983. His late wife, Jeannette, was named an honorary alumna of the School of Law in 2006. The Whites were long-term supporters and major benefactors to the University, provided many gifts including a 1998 donation to help refurbish Buchtel Hall, the School of Law and the College of Nursing. The Whites have three children: Frances White James (JD '81), Dr. Susan White Braunstein, and Dr. Harold A. White, and three grandsons: Andrew White, Ethan White and James White. ten Graduation With Honors Graduation With Distinction To graduate with distinction, students must have maintained specified levels of academic achievement directly related to quality points earned for all undergraduate courses taken. Buchtel stands in the middle of the campus he helped found in 1870. thirty-two The Alma M ater Chorus The Alma Mater for The University of Akron was written by the Rev. Augustus B. Church who was the last Universalist clergy to serve as president of Buchtel College (1901–1912). He was also the first person to assume the board responsibilities of chief executive officer. In fact, Church served both as president and as a trustee of the institution — as well as pastor of the First Universalist Church of Akron. Dr. Church understood the importance of higher education as a means to improve society, and he worked diligently on projects to successfully link the educational efforts of Buchtel College with the needs of a growing city. During his presidency, Buchtel College offered the world’s first courses in rubber chemistry (1909). thirty-three The Akron Blue and Gold The University of Akron’s fight song, “The Akron Blue and Gold,” was written in 1939 by Fred Waring, nationally known composer and leader of the wildly-popular band, “Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians.” In response to a request from the University’s student newspaper, Waring wrote “a distinctive song” for The University of Akron. “The Akron Blue and Gold” premiered over his NBC hookup on November 17, 1939, and has been used as the University’s fight song ever since. thirty-four The University of Akron: A Proud Tradition O T he Ohio Universalist Convention established a small, liberal arts college in Akron in 1870 and named it for one of the city’s prominent industrialists, John R. Buchtel. It was Buchtel who led a group of 100 individuals and 13 businesses in a fund-raising campaign to build the college. On July 4, 1871, thousands of area citizens turned out to witness the results of that initiative, joining in a great celebration as the cornerstone was laid for a single but impressive structure that constituted Buchtel College. Both a vision ary and a pragmatist, Buchtel believed that the vigor of any city is closely tied to the proximity of a high quality institution of higher education. Decades of progress, both for the city and for the college he launched, have proven him right. With an enrollment of 25,900 students from throughout Ohio, the United States, and 86 foreign countries, the successor of Buchtel College is one of the largest principal campuses in Ohio. Long committed to an academic tradition which stresses excellence, The University of Akron offers more than 300 associate, baccalaureate, and master’s degree programs and options, as well as 18 doctoral degree programs and four law degrees. Since 1914, the University has been accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and it is currently classified at the highest level as a comprehensive, doctoraldegree-granting institution. Today, more than 142,000 of its alumni live and work around the world. This program is not an official graduation list. While every effort is made to ensure accuracy in this commencement program, printing deadlines sometimes prevent inclusion of candidates’ names, or may result in the use of names of persons not completing graduation requirements. All honors indicated in this program are tentative. Official degree honors for diplomas and tran scripts will be determined after final grades are reported. This printed program, therefore, should not be used to determine a student’s academic or degree status. The University’s official registry for conferral of degrees is the student’s permanent academic record, kept by the Office of the University Registrar, Simmons Hall, Akron, OH 44325-6208. thirty-five
