Principal and leadership support
E kore au e ngaro, te kākano i ruia mai i Rangiātea.
The quality of professional leadership is absolutely critical to drive student success in learning. The demands on principals and
school leaders are significant and complex, and we offer a number of services to assist both new and experienced leaders such
as principal appraisals, use of Pakirēhua, use of student achievement data, mentoring and coaching, NAG2A reporting, teacher
registration requirements and the preparation of school charters.
Teaching Te Reo Māori
Ko te reo te mauri o te mana Māori. The language is the life force of the mana Māori.
Te reo Māori is the indigenous language of New Zealand and is embedded in the New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aoteroa. The
national curriculum acknowledges the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and encourages all schools and kura to recognise the importance of te
reo Māori and tikanga Māori at all levels from early learning through to primary and secondary school levels.
Te Aho Arataki Marau mō te Ako i Te Reo Māori (Curriculum Guidelines for Teaching and Learning Te Reo Māori) is intended to support Englishmedium schools to design and shape a curriculum that includes te reo Māori alongside other learning areas.
High quality Māori language in education is critical because it supports the identity, language and culture of all learners and provides all Māori
learners the opportunity they need to realise their unique potential and to succeed as Māori. As students learn te reo Māori, they also deepen
their knowledge and understanding of tikanga Māori and develop their own personal, group and national identities.
Our facilitators are able to work alongside teachers and schools leaders to develop Māori language programmes for students, and provide practical
support to develop knowledge, skills and confidence to use te reo Māori within teaching and learning from Year 1 to 13.
Working alongside clusters/communities of learning
Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini.
We understand most schools are keenly focused on developing the capability of their own leaders, teachers and whānau to provide high quality
education for their students. Sharing knowledge and practice across schools and their communities has also been integral to whanaungatanga
and continuing to build the collective success and well-being of our people.
Facilitators from Te Whai Toi Tangata can support your leaders and teachers to take advantage of being part of a wider learning community.
There are many ways we can work alongside schools and communities that would like to work more collaboratively on shared priorities – to
co-construct and facilitate specific focused professional learning sessions, to guide inquiry into teacher and leadership practice using the
Pakirehua model, and to work alongside tumuaki and principals who would like to establish a professional learning group.
Teacher Led Innovation Fund
Mā te mōhio, ka mārama; Mā te mārama, ka mātau; Mā te mātau, ka ora!
Schools hold a critical role in the revitalisation of the Māori language and education that reflects the language, culture and identity of their
students, whānau and iwi. The spirit of innovation thrives within Māori medium settings, and there are opportunities for schools to pursue the
creation of knowledge and research that contributes to the maintenance of kaupapa Māori within dual medium settings. Te Whai Toi Tangata is
well positioned to collaborate with teachers and schools interested in submitting proposals for the Teacher Led Innovation Fund to undertake
innovative research that will accelerate student success in education.
If you have innovative ideas and projects that you would like to explore further, we have experienced facilitators who can work alongside
teachers and schools. We can contribute to discussions or decision making processes to help your school and teachers take advantage of
being part of a wider learning community and/or undertaking inquiry into practice with other teachers to develop innovative ways of helping
students succeed at kura.
Contestable funding to support innovation research is available from the Ministry of Education. For more information about the Teacher Led
Innovation Fund, you can contact your regional Ministry of Education office or search their website: www.education.govt.nz
