EEO Newletter - Issue 3, March 2015
Welcome
EEO Update
Welcome back,
we all seem to
be gearing up for
another busy year.
While 2014 was a
great celebration
anniversary year
for the University,
turning 50 means
the University has entered a new phase
that will bring greater expectations of
organisational maturity and new challenges.
EEO Assessment
We begin this next phase at a time of
uncertainty and change in the global tertiary
sector. These changes are likely to be felt
by each and every one of us. The nature of
this global tertiary transformation is still
evolving, but we can be certain of a few
things: we need to be more open, flexible
and cooperative; and to go about our work
more efficiently and collaboratively; we need
to show excellence in our research, teaching
and service provision so that we attract and
retain top students and staff in this highly
competitive environment; we also need to be
strong in our leadership and delivering on our
responsibilities.
2015 will provide an opportunity to better
understand our organisational culture, who
we are, what we value and the way we need
to do things around here. As individuals
we need to be current in our thinking and
practices to keep pace with change. I
encourage you to identify your strengths, any
areas in need of development and your career
directions, and to work with others to achieve
these aspirations.
I look forward to working with you in 2015.
In the words of our new Vice-Chancellor we
are ‘moving from a good university to a great
university’

and the development of EEO indicators against which progress can be monitored. A report on
the Career Progression Survey is available on http://www.waikato.ac.nz/pod/eeo/index.shtml
and the gender responses to the Staff Engagement Survey 2014 are available at http://www.

The assessment identified several areas of improvement on EEO issues which will be
developed over 2015 and EEO professional development opportunities (TBA).

Profiling Dr Laura Haughey
Dr Laura Haughey moved to New Zealand
from the North of England in January 2014
to the University of Waikato to take up the
position as Lecturer in the Theatre Studies
Programme. She comes from a background of
working within a Deaf led theatre company
in the UK, which toured both nationally and
internationally, and for the last 10 years
has been Artistic Director of the multiarts company ‘Equal Voices Arts’ (www.
equalvoices.co.uk). Further detail about
the workshops may be found at http://
www.equalvoices.co.uk/blog/sign-theatreworkshops-in-hamilton-new-zealand/
Laura’s research interests include inclusive
theatre practice and as part of a university
funded research project, she has set up three
taster community workshops to explore
Sign Theatre and physical storytelling. The
workshops will be NZSL interpreted and
will explore methods of working bilingually
through the actor’s body. Laura is very
grateful to Deaf Aotearoa for their support
and guidance in setting up these workshops,
which begin on February 17th at the
Gallagher Academy of the Performing Arts.
For further information please contact
[email protected].
Laura will also be holding auditions in March
2015 for an inclusive theatre ensemble which
will hopefully include Deaf, hearing, disabled
and non-disabled performers. This work
will draw from Laura’s previous experience
and explore modes of sign theatre and how
manual languages can inform physicality and
communication on stage.
