student visa information brochure

You will need to renew your student visa before it expires and if
no PC has been provided during this time your visa application
will be declined without INZ making any further contact with you.
Note: When you receive your medical or police certificate you
are required to send it to INZ at the following address:
Student Visa Information
Student Processing Unit,
Immigration New Zealand
State Insurance Building
61-75 Rangitikei Street
Palmerston North

We recommend that you courier these documents as they are
very valuable. We also recommend that you keep a copy of
your certificates.
Medical/Police Certificate Update for
Students Who Have Applied on Campus
Label Has Arrived
If INZ request a medical certificate, they will hold your visa
application and send an automatic email requesting additional
documents. The timeframe given for a client to obtain their
medical or chest x-ray certificate is 15 days from the date the
email was sent. Be sure to acknowledge this email immediately.
If you are unable to obtain certificates within the 15-day
timeframe, please contact the International Services Office to
request an extension.
We will email you when your student visa label arrives at our
office. Failure to collect a visa label will result in your label being
returned to INZ and you will need to submit a new application.
Note: If INZ does not receive these documents or any contact
within the 15-day timeframe the application will/may be declined.
If you do not wish to continue your studies here at the University
of Waikato and you hold a student visa we are obliged to inform
INZ by submitting a Termination of Enrolment Form. At this
point please contact Immigration NZ if you wish to remain in
New Zealand so that they can advise you on the appropriate
visa you will need to lawfully remain.
The above also applies to police certificates (PC); however, if
you are unable to provide this within the given time frame, due
to either a delay obtaining the PC from your home country/
embassy, or appointments to obtain fingerprinting, please contact
the International Services Office.
When requesting a PC please also request a letter of confirmation
or receipt to confirm that you have applied for it. Please bring it to
the visa team and we can scan this to INZ for you.
If you have not provided your PC, INZ may approve the student
visa for a shorter duration. A notice will be included with the
student visa label advising you that you are still required to
provide the PC before you apply for the next visa.

to you:
When renewing your student visa and your family’s visas there
are two options available to you and your family:
» You can submit a student visa application directly to INZ using
Student Visa Form INZ 1012 (white); or
Student Visa
» Apply through our Students Online service on campus using
Student Visa Form (blue).
» You can submit your (student) application on campus and

or alternatively
All international students in full-time study must have a student
visa to study at the University of Waikato.
A student visa allows you to reside and study in New Zealand and
will state the expiry date and conditions of your visa. Conditions
include course of study, educational institution, location of the
institution in New Zealand and any other restrictions.
It is your responsibility to ensure that your student visa does not
expire and that you do not breach the conditions of your visa.
If you change your course of study or your education provider then
you must apply for a new student visa or variation of conditions to
comply with Immigration New Zealand (INZ) policy.
Note: Full-time study is considered to be enrolment in at least three
papers (courses) or equivalent per semester.
If you decide to drop a paper then you may no longer be considered
a full-time student and no longer entitled to hold your current
student visa. Please consult with Immigration NZ before dropping
a paper.
An exception to the above is if you are completing your degree
and may have only one or two papers remaining. You will need
to complete the remaining paper(s) in one semester to qualify for
a student visa and you must provide a letter from your Faculty
confirming that you are completing your course of study.
Visitor Visa
You may undertake a course of study on a visitor visa if the
course is no longer than three calendar months in duration, eg
English language courses (Waikato Pathways College).
» Submit all (yours and your family’s) applications directly
to INZ.

The University of Waikato is accredited to INZ as a Students
Online partner. If you are already in New Zealand and meet the
requirements you can apply for your student visa on campus
(refer to www.waikato.ac.nz/students/international).
We can only accept a visa application on campus if you are a
student of the University of Waikato.
You can renew your student visas on campus throughout the
year. At the beginning of A and B Semesters we have a drop-in
visa renewal service for at least four weeks. Please enquire at the
Student Centre or check www.waikato.ac.nz for those dates.
Outside of these dates, you can renew your visa by making an
appointment at the Student Administration desk on Level 2 of the
Student Centre.
Academic Progress
Immigration instructions state that the visa holder must make
satisfactory progress in their course of study. This is primarily
determined by the education provider offering the course, and
assessed against its academic progress policies.
Note: If you are not eligible to apply for a student visa through
the International Service Office due to poor academic progress
(not passing at least 75% of your papers), you will have to apply
directly to Immigration New Zealand. Your student visa may be
approved but you will likely be issued with a warning letter from
Immigration New Zealand to improve performance to acceptable
levels and/or a visa for a shorter duration.
Interim Visa
Interim visas may be granted to maintain a person’s lawful status
in New Zealand, where he or she holds a valid temporary visa
such as a student visa, and has applied for a further temporary
visa. The new type of visa is one of the changes introduced by the
Immigration Act 2009.
In most cases an interim visa will be granted automatically by
electronic means, and there is no fee and no visa label. People
who are granted interim visas will be notified by email or letter.
The interim visa will be valid until the date a person’s application
for a temporary visa is decided (up to a maximum of six months).
Please bring this notification letter or email to Student
Administration at the Student Centre when you receive it.
Insurance Requirements
Foreign fee-paying students (excluding New Zealand Aid
Programme-supported students, PhD or Exchange students) are
required to hold acceptable insurance as a condition of their
visa. Your insurance must cover you from the beginning of your
studies until at least the expiry of your student visa.
You are required to declare in your student visa application
that you will make the necessary arrangements to meet
this condition.
An acceptable insurance policy is one which complies with the
insurance requirements of the Code of Practice for the Pastoral
Care of International Students and is acceptable to the University
of Waikato.
The University of Waikato has selected Studentsafe-University
(SSU) as its preferred insurance for all international students.
