Large sites are limited and therefore large groups have fewer choices than small and medium sized groups. Extended stays at popular group sites displaces others for multiple days in a row. Some sections of the river do not offer as many campsites, especially for larger groups. Take advantage of sites that do not have an outhouse. These include many sand and gravel bars and low elevation benches just above the river. Be courteous and accommodating to groups that may have to share your site. If you are a small group using a large site – use one side of the site so you are prepared to share if necessary. Remain flexible in your choice of sites. Don’t unnecessarily impose your group on a site already occupied when other sites may be available. 1/9/2012 Wild Rogue Campsites The Rogue River is unique in that the management plan calls for maximizing use on a per person basis, up to 120 people per day. This means the number of groups launching each day widely varies. In addition, the length of time spent on individual trips typically varies between 3 and 7 days. With this unpredictable combination of trip length and number of trips, your river experience may feel either crowded or remote. During those times when both length of trip and number of launches is high, the competition for campsites is increased. If your group has 9 people or less, please consider using a small site and leave large sites for large groups. If your group is smaller than the estimated size of the site, be prepared to share that site. Small sites accommodate 9 people or less. Large sites accommodate 10 and over. Campsite size, number of tent sites, and the description of sites can vary due to water levels; differing opinions on closeness of tents to one another; and changes in the amount of sand, vegetation and flat area. Numbers in table are for 1,000 - 2,000 cfs. Keep in mind when the river is running above 2,000 cfs, fewer campsites will be available. Permits are required for float trips below Grave Creek from May 15th thru October 15th. Contact the Smullin Visitor Center for more information.
