Research, Resources and Indigenous Rights Symposium Venue: Date: Hosts: The Lady Goodfellow Chapel, Gate 1, Knighton Road, University of Waikato 8.30am - 4pm on Tuesday May 19, 2015 Te Mata Ira Research Project and Te Mata Hautū Taketake, the Māori and Indigenous Governance Centre, Te Piringa - Faculty of Law, University of Waikato The purpose of the symposium is to share key messages emerging from the Te Mata Ira research project focussed on the use of human tissue in biomedical research. Key messages from this research will be presented alongside international experts in bioethics and Indigenous health, and Māori academics from the University of Waikato who will discuss how these issues relate to the management of resources more generally and lessons that might be applied to biomedical research and biobanking. The speakers will share examples from national and international contexts relating to the issues of Governance, Cultural Foundation, Engagement with Indigenous communities, Free Prior Informed Consent and Benefit Sharing, and discuss how this relates to discourse around Indigenous Rights and the management of resources.
