Photo Elicitation Instructions

Assessment item 1 Group exploration of P&PBE
The first part of this assessment task requires you to use photo-elicitation techniques to
explore and share your understandings of:
1. professional practice and
2. practice-based education
Photo-elicitation or the viewing and discussing of photographs is a powerful medium to
elicit deeper understandings of often taken-for-granted experiences.
To get started with this assignment you should take a photograph of something that
represents professional practice and another photograph of something that represents
practice-based education to you. Remember this part of the assignment is meant to
reflect your current understandings so you are not required to undertake readings or
explore theories at this stage. Just think about these concepts and start snapping! Once
you are happy with the photographs you have taken write a few sentences on how the
photograph represents professional practice/practice-based education to you.
As an example, I have provided photographs I have taken with accompanying
explanations.
Professional Practice
This image of cranes across the city at Darling Harbour illustrates dynamic and changing
aspects of professional practice. The cranes represent ongoing building and change to
meet the city's ever changing needs - just as professional practices constantly evolve to
meet changing societal needs. The cranes also represent active and purposeful work
which aligns with the need for professional practitioners to actively and purposefully
contribute to the ongoing evolution of professional practices.
Practice-Based Education
This image of a gate represents the potential of practice-based education to open up
new worlds of professional practice for students. Through practice-based education
experiences students are prepared for and develop capabilities needed for the
professional practices they wish to enter. It can also represent the opening up of
practice-based education itself and the many varied pedagogies (teaching and learning
strategies) that are encompassed in practice-based education.
Hopefully this will help you to get started! Please respond within this thread if you would
like to add your own thoughts or ask any questions regarding what is required in this
first photograph taking part of the assignment.
Cheers,
Narelle
