LAKE VIEW HIGH SCHOOL Principal Report | February 25th, 2015 Scott Grens, Principal, [email protected] PRINCIPAL LEADERSHIP: The 7 Standards School Leadership § Builds High Performing Teams § Coordinates the Work of Others § Implements the Vision UPDATES: Continuous Improvement • CARE Team servicing students with all major misconducts logged and making major success. • Organizing Freshmen Grade Level Team to focus on improving FOT and student-‐centeredness. • Collaborative meetings taking place (Collaboration Calendar): Department Leaders, Departments, Course Teams, ILT, Counseling, Freshmen Team, etc. Instructional Leadership • Creating a focused “Course of Study” to improve student growth, increase staff certainty of teaching assignment(s), and diminish frustration from packed classrooms. • Implementing “Data-‐Driven Programming” versus “Student Choice” in course level selections. • PPLC pushed back due to weather days of instruction – PPLC will be elected by staff. • One Goal program launched for SY2015-‐2016 taught by Ms. Darnell to 30 students. Student-‐Centered • Academic Approach taking place for 60 Juniors in preparation for PSAE (ACT). Learning Climate § High Academic Expectations • Academic Approach ACT Preparation started in December for 61 students. § Personalism and Caring • Lake View High School is regularly communicating with its partner, University of Chicago’s § Discipline and Order Network for College Success, for coaching, support, and best-‐practice sharing for both teacher leaders and administrative leaders (Recent benefits include mentoring, meeting co-‐facilitation, and visits to the University of Chicago for collaboration and an upcoming March Collaboration Event). Professional Development • 5Essentials (My Voice My School) workshop took place last week for staff to celebrate accomplishments of school-‐to-‐date. and Human Resources rd • PSAE (ACT) Testing workshops took place today for staff to prepare for March 3 exam date. Management • REACH Observations in Second and Third Round for many staff. § Professional Development • REACH Mid-‐year feedback provided to all ESP staff at LVHS. § Recruitment and Hiring § Staff Observation/Evaluation • Currently seeking and hiring 1 additional Special Education Classroom Assistant (SECA). and Instructional Supervision • Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) members are reviewing school-‐wide data for the design of a Professional Learning Cycle (Supporting Teaching and Learning) • Mayor Emanuel breakfast w/ Aldermen O’Connor, Pawar, and Tunney took place Thursday at Parent Involvement and LVHS in partnership with Amundsen HS and 5-‐6 LSC members from schools to share success and Community Partnership raise awareness of school success and community involvement. § Parent Involvement th • “Spring Showcase 2015” Scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 26 . § Community Partnerships th • PAC meeting taking place tomorrow, Feb. 26 • Early College STEM School Partnership “Reset” Meetings taking place with DePaul and Microsoft. • Community Newsletter reaching 4,000 in production celebrating 30 LVHS Seniors accepted to Univ. of Illinois. th • Entry change for visitors and students scheduled for March 11 due to extreme weather School Management & conditions. Daily Operations • Website content increasingly updated. § Daily Operations • As a result of final ISBE authorization, CPS is releasing an additional $1.6M in Title I Parent § Fiscal Management Involvement funds and has increased the Title I Per Eligible pupil rate from $12.83 to $21.60. * This means PAC budget increased from $8,424 to $14,061. • Focusing on increasing “Principal Visibility” in following weeks for school climate and service. Lake View High School will work with the University of Chicago’s Network for College Success to develop the capacity of our Instructional leadership Team with the goal of the ILT leading staff through a series of professional development opportunities centered around one common targeted instructional area (TIA). The ILT will progress monitor the TIA to ensure that effective teaching and learning strategies are shared, supported, and rooted in action research to increase student achievement. CCSS Math: The Math Department will work collaboratively to unpack Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for math and the 8 Mathematical Practice Standards and develop a scope & sequence for the department, as well as common assessments & unit plans for the grade-‐level teams. The department and course teams will meet every other week to perform and progress monitor this work so that effective DDI can be utilized to continuously improve math instruction that is aligned to CCSS. Science: The Science Department will work collaboratively to unpack the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and develop a scope & sequence for the department, as well as common assessments & unit plans for the grade-‐level teams. The department and course teams will meet every other week to perform and progress monitor this work so that effective DDI can be utilized to continuously improve science instruction that is aligned to NGSS, CCSS, and CRS. Attendance: Build school-‐wide attendance policies and plan for parent/guardian engagement. Strengthen incentive program, regular communication to parents/guardians regarding student attendance, and a school-‐wide teacher-‐driven focus on attendance monitoring and support. College Access & Persistence: Strengthen curriculum, instructional practice, and professional development, particularly in Math and English to qualify students for college-‐level coursework. At the same time, develop an Early College culture and structures for ensuring students are prepared for and supported in their Early College coursework. Climate, Culture, and Social Emotional Learning: LVHS has a school-‐wide guideline that Lake View is HOME, which focuses students on the importance of Honor, Ownership, Mastery and Education and what each one entails; explicit social-‐emotional learning on needs as identified in various data; incentives to motivate students in growth areas as seen in data; restorative justice that prioritizes learning rather than punishment; a focus on collaboration and continuous learning for staff as well as students common planning time that is prioritized, structured, and planned in advance to maximize planning around both academic and social-‐emotional supports.
