PRINCIPAL LEADERSHIP: The 7 Standards School Leadership UPDATES: Continuous Improvement • Counselors off-­‐site this week for Professional Development through CPS. • Department Leaders are meeting regularly with administration to share leadership strategies w/ a focus on “Facilitative Leadership” (i.e. agendas, celebrations, etc.). • Admin. arranging meeting w/ Course Team Leaders to gain input on roles & responsibilities. • Collaborative meetings taking place (Collaboration Calendar): Department Leaders, Departments, Course Teams, ILT, Counseling, Freshmen Team, etc. • HOME Awards provided for staff in Q2: Honor: Brett Bildstein | Ownership: Matt Rosenberg | Mastery: Brian Boes and Gabriela Frate | Education: Lisa Guralnick • PPC and Administration meeting Friday, 3/20, to discuss Bell Schedule options and use of Instructional Leadership § Assessment Professional Development days for SY2015-­‐2016 before arranging possible staff vote before 4/17. § Curriculum • Department Leaders receiving support from administration around the design process for creating § Instruction common summative assessments and rubrics in alignment to our “Collaboration Map” as a school to then adapt and share with teachers school-­‐wide. • Principal Grens and Asst. Principal Newton met with DePaul University and Northwestern University today to discuss possible Professional Development structures for staff in the summer (in alignment with CIWP priorities, such as CCSS and NGSS as foci) and STEM programs for students in the fall, particularly female students (i.e. “Girls in Science,” etc.). rd

Learning Climate § High Academic Expectations • Lake View High School is regularly communicating with its partner, University of Chicago’s § Personalism and Caring Network for College Success, for coaching, support, and best-­‐practice-­‐sharing for the ILT and § Discipline and Order Administrative Team with a recent dinner at U of C on 3/11/2015 for ILT members. • 16 students enrolled in Spring Break Music in STEM Program • 15 students enrolled in Spring STEM Launch on 21 March • Microsoft Interview workshop scheduled for Juniors on 24 March 2015 • Summer internship applications are due 27 March 2015 -­‐ The district has 60 internship opportunities so far. • Night school taking place currently for LVHS and non-­‐LVHS students. • All Advanced Placement (AP) students registered and paid for testing school-­‐wide! • Lucera Varela was invited to the White House Science Fair. She presented her science fair project at the National Science Teacher Association (NSTA) conference this past Saturday; she was one of the 30 seniors accepted to UIUC and wants to major in Political Science and minor in Economics. • Candyality owner Terese McDonald recently reached out to the LVHS Visual Arts Department to create a partnership to build and model a prom dress made from Skittles wrappers. LVHS senior Cristal G. stepped up to grab this amazing opportunity to design an amazing project. • 118 students accepted to DePaul Universtiy. Professional Development • 5Essentials (My Voice My School) response rates increased 20% from staff for this year in comparison to last year with 87% completion rate for staff and 85% for students; plan for and Human Resources parent/family completion is in progress for engaging parents at Report Card Pick Up. Management • REACH Observations in Third Round for many staff; admin. working to “calibrate” and § Professional Development continuously improve feedback process to ensure both support and accountability of teachers. § Recruitment and Hiring •
Filled 2 vacant Special Education Classroom Assistant (SECA) positions this week with onboarding § Staff Observation/Evaluation of new Wildcat Team Members in progress. and Instructional Supervision • Currently seeking the hiring of 1 College Career Coach in the Counseling Department. • Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) members are planning for engaging the entire staff in the process of selecting one Targeted Instructional Area. • Ongoing “Partnership Reset” Meetings taking place with Microsoft. Recent announcement of Parent Involvement and possible funding support from Microsoft for the following: STEM Challenge $15,000; Summer Community Partnership Interns $10,000 for 2015 summer; and, Prizes/laptops for students for STEM Challenge, plus any § Parent Involvement § Builds High Performing Teams § Coordinates the Work of Others § Implements the Vision Page 1 of 2

extra funding for other Lake View HS to use with possible $4500. • “Spring Showcase 2015” feedback overwhelmingly positive in emails, social media, etc. • PAC planning for initiative process to increase Parent/Family Response Rate of MyVoiceMySchool. • Community Newsletter reaching 4,000-­‐6,000 to celebrate LVHS accomplishments forthcoming in coming week(s). • Meeting scheduled to discuss possible supports and partnership opportunities forthcoming with the University of Chicago’s Urban Education Institute, an organization focused on applied research; teacher and leader development; schooling structures; and, tools and innovative strategies (i.e. My Voice My School, etc.). • “Family Engagement Plan” in possible planning for school-­‐wide engagement of all stakeholders. • Entry change and new signage receiving praise from visitors and additional safety for students. • Administration and Deans meeting to review In-­‐School-­‐Suspension structures and best practices. • CPS proposing large-­‐scale interior painting of LVHS this summer to remodel classrooms. th
• Comcast RFP approved for a “Comcast Cares” community support day on April 25 . More TBD. • New carpeting installation scheduled for the library over Spring Break. • Request submitted by Principal Grens to CPS for earlier start and dismissal times at LVHS. • Focusing on increasing “Principal Visibility” in following weeks for school climate and service. • Parent Conferences taking place regularly for attendance and student intervention/support/etc. • Website Updates in-­‐progress • Staff Memos and Staff Updates shared regularly via Staff Updates, which need more frequency. CCSS Literacy: The English, Social Studies, and Focus Departments will work collaboratively to unpack Common Core State Standards and develop a scope & sequence for the departments, as well as common assessments & unit plans for the grade-­‐level teams. Lake View High School will work with the University of Chicago’s Network for College Success to develop the capacity of our Instructional leadership Team with the goal of the ILT leading staff through a series of professional development opportunities centered around one common targeted instructional area (TIA). The ILT will progress monitor the TIA to ensure that effective teaching and learning strategies are shared, supported, and rooted in action research to increase student achievement. CCSS Math: The Math Department will work collaboratively to unpack Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for math and the 8 Mathematical Practice Standards and develop a scope & sequence for the department, as well as common assessments & unit plans for the grade-­‐level teams. The department and course teams will meet every other week to perform and progress monitor this work so that effective DDI can be utilized to continuously improve math instruction that is aligned to CCSS. Science: The Science Department will work collaboratively to unpack the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and develop a scope & sequence for the department, as well as common assessments & unit plans for the grade-­‐level teams. The department and course teams will meet every other week to perform and progress monitor this work so that effective DDI can be utilized to continuously improve science instruction that is aligned to NGSS, CCSS, and CRS. Attendance: Build school-­‐wide attendance policies and plan for parent/guardian engagement. Strengthen incentive program, regular communication to parents/guardians regarding student attendance, and a school-­‐wide teacher-­‐driven focus on attendance monitoring and support. College Access & Persistence: Strengthen curriculum, instructional practice, and professional development, particularly in Math and English to qualify students for college-­‐level coursework. At the same time, develop an Early College culture and structures for ensuring students are prepared for and supported in their Early College coursework. Climate, Culture, and Social Emotional Learning: LVHS has a school-­‐wide guideline that Lake View is HOME, which focuses students on the importance of Honor, Ownership, Mastery and Education and what each one entails; explicit social-­‐emotional learning on needs as identified in various data; incentives to motivate students in growth areas as seen in data; restorative justice that prioritizes learning rather than punishment; a focus on collaboration and continuous learning for staff as well as students common planning time that is prioritized, structured, and planned in advance to maximize planning around both academic and social-­‐emotional supports.
