Narrowing Your Results
When you’ve completed a search, your results appear in the right pane. The left pane
lists the filters you can apply to narrow your results to documents of interest.
Your filters will appear in the following order:
•
•
by Document Type
by Library
•
by Topic
•
by Jurisdiction
e.g. Commentary, Legislation, and Regulations
e.g. Tax, Corporate and Business Law or HR
Employment

Changing Your Search Scope
In the first example, the search was conducted using the all contents search. With
IntelliConnect you have different options to search specific content, your search
results, and the document in view.
Depending on which elements of your library you’d like to search, click the search
scope down arrow and select a search scope. If the search mode is not available, it
will be disabled or "greyed-out."

Smarter Searching
By default, IntelliConnect processes all searches as “AND” searches. For Example, a
search for “dog cat” will find documents that have the words “dog” and “cat” in
them. Additionally, if you type in terms with other connectors such as “OR” or “not”,
IntelliConnect will recognise those connectors and will process them automatically.
There’s no need to select a specific processing mode if you use Boolean or proximity
connectors in your search. (For more information See Page 27)
Your search results will appear on the right pane of the IntelliConnect screen. By
default they will be listed by relevancy.

Glossary
Boolean: Boolean logic refers to the logical relationship among search terms. It is
named after the British-born Irish mathematician George Boole. On IntelliConnect,
simply type the search expression and the system will automatically search using the
terms typed. (See also page 27)
Connectors: Predefined terms that establish a relationship between words and
retrieves documents that match this relationship.
Commentary: Editorial Commentary and/or analysis written by CCH/WK Editors.
Filters: Search results display by document type within the left results pane. This
allows the researcher to narrow the hits to review from a search.
1st Search Term: Selectable icon that repositions the cursor to the 1st occurrence of
the search term or its thesaurus equivalent.
Practice Areas: The specific content a user accesses. This is customised via the
preferences tab.
Preview Pane: Section of the search results window that shows the document
selected from the search results. This appears in the bottom right section of the
window.
Proximity Connectors: Terms used to retrieve words or phrases with specified
parameters, for example within a paragraph would be w/par.
Related Information: Editorially created relationship tool that retrieves documents
that contain additional information, for example Legislation and Commentary. The
researcher can move through each document type to obtain additional information
relative to the research issue.
Relevancy: This refers to the “weight” or “significance” assigned to a document with
a search results list. It is a combination of the number of times the search terms
appear and the importance of a document. For example, a Supreme Court case will
have a higher relevance than a CCH Explanation.

Advanced Search Using Boolean Technique
The key to a successful search on IntelliConnect is a good search expression. A good
search expression includes words that are unique to your research topic and avoids
common words that may appear throughout the publication and, therefore, are
unrelated to your research topic. When devising a good search expression, you can
use an exact phrase, or you can use Boolean connectors to connect various terms you
want to include in the search expression.
There are many ways to create a search expression that returns relevant search
results:
•
Think about your research topic and identify unique words that make up the
topic.
•
Construct an expression using these unique words — that is, a keyword, a string
of keywords related to your question, or an exact phrase.
Using Boolean Connectors in Your Search
The Boolean search method allows you to type search expressions using the Boolean
connectors AND, OR, and NOT and the proximity connectors W/n, F/n, P/n, W/sen,
and W/par. (See below for explanation) These connectors indicate the relationship
that two or more terms in the search expression must have in a document in order for
the document to be included in your search results. To use Boolean connectors, simply
type your search expression using the Boolean connector that fits your specific search
criteria between the terms of your search expression.
Here is a list of Boolean connectors and a description of what each retrieves:
o AND - Placing the word AND between terms retrieves documents that contain
both of the terms. (For example, petrol and oil retrieves documents that
contain petrol and oil.)
o OR - Placing the word OR between terms will retrieve documents that contain
either or both of the terms. This is useful for entering synonyms or alternative
terms like child or dependent. (For example, petrol or oil retrieves documents
that contain either term or both terms.)
o NOT - Placing the word NOT between terms retrieves documents that contain
the first terms only if the second term does not appear. This connector is useful
when your keyword often appears in a context that is irrelevant to your
research. (For example, if you want to find documents concerning Maternity
leave only, the search expression Maternity not Paternity excludes documents
in which Paternity occurs in reference to parental leave.)
o W/n - Placing w/n between terms retrieves documents in which the first term
appears within 25 words of the second term (where n equals the number of
words between terms). (For example, petrol w/25 oil retrieves documents that
contain the words petrol and oil when they appear within 25 words of each
Advanced Search Using Boolean Technique
Page | 27
other.) Note: The value of n cannot exceed 127 words.
o W/sen ‐ Placing w/sen between terms retrieves documents that contain the
first terms within 20 words of the second term. (For example, home office
AND deduction w/sen expenses retrieves home office AND deduction within 20
words of expenses. Similarly, you can type in home office OR deduction w/sen
expenses to retrieve home office OR deduction within 20 words of expenses.)
o W/par ‐ Placing w/par between terms retrieves documents that contain the
first terms within 80 words of the second term. (For example, petrol station
w/par oil refinery retrieves petrol station within 80 words of oil refinery. For
example, home office AND deduction w/par expenses retrieves home office
AND deduction within 80 words of expenses. Similarly, you can type in home
office OR deduction w/par expenses to retrieve home office OR deduction
within 80 words of expenses.)
o F/n ‐ Placing f/n between terms retrieves documents in which the
follows the second term by no more than n words. (For example,
foreign retrieves documents containing both the words credit and
which the word credit follows the word foreign by no more
words.)(i.e. n = 2 in the example).
