WMS International Exchange Scholarships
R EGULATIONS 2016-17
1.
Purpose
1.1.
These Scholarships have been established to enhance the awareness and foster interest in
exchange programmes offered by the University of Waikato. Ten Scholarships are awarded
each year to:

encourage students to participate in exchange programmes;

provide financial support to students approved for exchange programmes; and,

promote exchange destinations most relevant for management.
Eligibility
2.1.
A candidate must:
2.1.1. have completed at least one year of study at the Waikato Management School and
be eligible to apply for exchange programmes;
2.1.2. have been accepted into a University of Waikato exchange programme;
2.1.3. apply to recommended institutions (seee appendix A);
2.1.4. be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand; and,
2.1.5. be a full-time student at the Waikato Management School.
3.
Value
3.1.
The values of the Scholarships (in NZD) are as follows:
3.1.1. Europe $2,500;
3.1.2. USA, Canada, and Mexico $2,000; and,
3.1.3. Asia $1,500.
4. Application
4.1.
The deadlines for applications are 13 March 2016 for B Semester 2016 exchanges and
17 July 2016 for A Semester 2017 exchanges.
4.2.
When completing the online Scholarship applicaiton, each applicant must upload:

a personal statement using the template stipulated in the online application form; and,

a brief CV (of no more than three pages in length).
5. Selection Criteria
5.1.
5.2.
The awards are offered on the basis of:

academic performance;

perceived benefits of the exchange programme; and

reasons for choosing a particular institution and/or country.
Preference will be given to students who have achieved a minimum of A- grade average in
the last two semesters.

6. Selection Panel
6.1.
The Selection Panel will comprise the Waikato Management School’s Acting Dean, Associate
Dean International, Student Centre Manager, and Scholarships Committee member (or
nominees).
6.2.
The Selection Panel may refrain from making a recommendation if it finds no candidate of
sufficient merit.
6.3.
All applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application.
6.4.
The Selection Panel’s decision is final and no further correspondence will be entered into
following the selection meeting.
7. Awarding
7.1.
Successful applicants will be advised of the offer of a Scholarship within six weeks of the
closing date.
7.2.
The offer of a Scholarship must be accepted by the date indicated in the letter of offer. If a
candidate declines a Scholarship, or does not take it up, the Selection Panel may offer the
Scholarship to another applicant.
7.3.
A Scholarship shall be taken up in the semester for which it is offered.
7.4.
Receipt of the Scholarship will be conditional on acceptance into the exchange programme.
7.5.
Any exception or variation to these arrangements must be approved by the Selection Panel.
8. Other Conditions
8.1.
The Scholarship may be held with any other bursary, scholarship or award, provided that the
regulations of the other award allow this.
8.2.
The Scholarships Committee may terminate a Scholarship at any time and recoup any funds
awarded, if it is not satisfied, that the recipient is following the required programme or is
otherwise complying with the conditions governing the Scholarship and/or the regulations of
the University of Waikato.
8.2.1. The holder of a Scholarship shall have the right to appeal to the Education
Committee against any decision to terminate the award.
8.3.
By accepting a Scholarship, a recipient agrees to participate in any publicity concerning the
Scholarship arranged by the University of Waikato.
