University of Waikato Taught Postgraduate Fees Scholarship

BACKGROUND
The University of Waikato established the Taught Postgraduate Fees Scholarship to support students
studying at postgraduate level, primarily undertaking coursework. Preference will be given to students on a
pathway to research qualifications at the University of Waikato. Awards will be determined on academic
merit.
REGULATIONS
1. Purpose
1.1. The University of Waikato Postgraduate Fees Scholarship is designed to support part- and full-time
students studying at postgraduate level1 at the University of Waikato. Applicants will primarily be
enrolling in coursework, rather than research papers.
2. Eligibility Criteria
2.1. The Scholarship is open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and international
students.
2.1.1. International students must have completed at least 120 points at any New Zealand
University.
2.2. To be eligible applicants must be:
a) enrolling in 500-level taught papers; OR
b) enrolling in 400-level taught papers that are categorised as Level 8 under the New Zealand
Qualifications Framework (see Appendix A).
2.3. Scholarships are awarded on academic merit, with a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of A–
expected. Normally, GPA calculations will be based on the equivalent of the applicant’s last two
years of full-time study.
2.4. Past recipients may apply for subsequent periods of Taught Postgraduate Fees Scholarship if they
continue to meet the eligibility criteria.
3. Value
3.1. The value of the Scholarship will be:
a) Total 60 points = $3,000
b) Total 30 points = $1,500
c) Total 15 points = $750

This can include: taught components of a masters degree - any papers required for the qualification including 30 or 60 point
dissertations (theses of 90 points or more are not eligible for this scholarship); Postgraduate Diplomas; Postgraduate Certificates;
and Honours degrees normally of one year duration.

3.2. Recipients may only receive funding for up to a maximum of 60 points in each application round.
3.3. The Scholarship will be applied to a recipient’s tuition fees in the year of scholarship tenure.
4. Application
4.1. Applications must be submitted prior to the commencement of the papers for which funding is
being sought.
4.2. A maximum of 60 points can be applied for in each Scholarship round.
4.3. There are two processing deadlines:
4.3.1.
Round 1: for study commencing S Semester or A Semester in the year following
application; applications close 31 October.
4.3.2.
Round 2: for study commencing B Semester or T Semester in the year of application;
applications close 30 April.
4.4. Applications for C Semester or Y semester papers must be submitted in the round preceding
enrolment (see 4.1)
4.5. Students enrolling in the Master of Business and Management (MBM) or Master of Professional
Management (MPM) programmes may only apply for a maximum of 60 points per scholarship
round.
For any papers where the start and end date overlap both application rounds, the
application should be submitted in the round preceding the relevant enrolment period.
5. Selection
5.1. Applications are ranked by the Dean and Scholarships Committee member of the respective
Faculties.
5.2. The University of Waikato Scholarships Committee will endorse the rankings at their annual
Scholarship selection meetings in December (for Round 1) and June (for Round 2).
5.3. All applicants will be advised in writing of the outcome of their application after the relevant
Scholarships Committee meeting.
5.4. The Committee’s decision is final; no correspondence will be entered into following the selection
meeting.
6. Awarding
6.1. Recipients must enrol in the papers listed on their Scholarship application.
6.1.1. Recipients wishing to change to papers of equivalent or lower points must seek approval
from the Scholarships Office.
Changes may effect scholarship eligibility which could
necessitate the University to recoup awarded funds.
6.2. A recipient’s fees credit will be processed as soon as practicable in the month after the
commencement of the relevant enrolment period.
7. Other Conditions
7.1. The Scholarship may be held together with any other scholarship, bursary, or prize, unless the
regulations of this Scholarship or the other funding preclude this.

7.2. Should the recipient hold another University of Waikato fees scholarship, the Taught Postgraduate
Scholarship will pay the balance of any tuition fees (up to the value awarded); however, the student
will forgo any unused balance of the Taught Postgraduate Fees Scholarship.
7.3. If, during the tenure of the Scholarship, a recipient’s circumstances change in such a manner that
their continued eligibility for the Scholarship may be affected, they must inform the Scholarships
Committee (via the Scholarships Office) immediately.
7.4. The Scholarships Committee may terminate a Scholarship at any time and recoup any funds
awarded, if it is not satisfied that the recipient is following the required programme or is not
otherwise complying with the conditions governing the Scholarship and/or the regulations of the
University of Waikato. The holder of a Scholarship shall have the right to appeal to the Education
Committee against any decision to terminate an award.
7.5. By accepting a Scholarship, the recipient agrees to participate in any publicity concerning the
Scholarship arranged by the University of Waikato.
