THE A ZULAUF TRUST SCHOLARSHIP 2014
BACKGROUND
The A Zulauf Trust Scholarship was established in 2011, to promote the study of Mathematics.
REGULATIONS
1.
The award shall be known as The A Zulauf Trust Scholarship.
2.
The purpose of this Scholarship is to promote the study of Mathematics at the University of
Waikato.
3.
Candidates will, in the year of application, be enrolled or enrolling full-time to undertake the
research portion of their Master’s degree. It is expected that the bulk of that research will
take place in the year of application.
4.
All applicants, domestic or international, will need to meet the University’s enrolment
criteria for the Master’s-level study that a recipient must undertake.
5.
The Selection Panel will comprise one or more Professors from the Department of
Mathematics, the Chair of the Mathematics Department, and a representative of the
University’s Scholarships Committee, or nominees.
6.
The Selection Panel will pay particular attention to the following:
a.
Academic excellence
b.
The comments of the referees.
The Selection Panel may also take into account the following:
c.
Achievements to date
d.
Future promise
e.
All-round qualities.
7.
Short-listed candidates may be required to attend an interview before the Selection Panel.
8.
The Scholarship shall be formally awarded by the University’s Scholarships Committee, on
the recommendation of the Selection Panel. The payment of the Scholarship will be
overseen by the Public Trust.
9.
The value of each one-year Scholarship will be up to $5,000.

10.
The Scholarship may be paid in two instalments.
11.
It is expected that the Scholarship will be used to defray course-related expenses.
12.
The Scholarship may be held together with any other award, unless the conditions of the
other preclude this.
13.
It is expected that the Scholarships Office will monitor the recipient’s progress, and
facilitate reporting to the Trust.
14.
By accepting a Scholarship, the recipient agrees to participate in any publicity concerning
the Scholarship arranged by the Trust and/or the University of Waikato. For example, a
recipient may be required to attend a presentation ceremony.
15.
The offer of a Scholarship must be accepted by the date indicated in the letter of offer. If a
candidate declines a Scholarship, or does not take it up, the Selection Panel may offer the
Scholarship to another person.
16.
The Scholarships Committee may terminate a Scholarship at any time and recoup any
funds disbursed if not satisfied that the holder is following the required programme in an
appropriate manner or otherwise complying with the conditions governing the Scholarship.
The recipient shall have the right to appeal to the Academic Board against any decision to
terminate an award.
17.
The due date for applications is 18 July 2014.
