•This is Dave Loos’ 23rd season as Austin Peay head coach and he is 370-331
at APSU–the winningest basketball coach in Ohio Valley Conference history–and
452-384 all-time in his 27th season as a college head coach
•APSU was picked to finish third behind Murray State and Southeast Missouri in
the newly-formed OVC West Division in the preseason poll. The Govs, however,
have been eliminated from OVC tourney contention with Wednesday’s loss.
•This is the final trip of a four-game road trek. The Govs will end the 2012-13
season next weekend at home against Southeast Missouri and UT Martin.
•This is APSU’s 10th year–the most of any OVC school–playing in the ESPN
BracketBuster Series, this year known as the ESPN Ramada Worldwide
BracketBusters. The Govs enter the final year of the series with a 3-6 record, still
seeking their first BracketBuster road victory.
•Liberty comes into the game with a 9-19 record, including 5-9 in the Big South.
The Flames currently are fifth in the conference’s North Division standings.
•Guard John Caleb Sanders, who was homeschooled (Homeschooled Christian
Youth Association in Texas), leads Liberty in scoring at 13.5 ppg while backcourt
mate Davion Marshall is averaging 12.8 ppg. A third guard, Tavares Speaks,
comes in at 12.6 ppg. Junior forward JR Coronado doesn’t score much (4.9 ppg)
but hits the boards at 8.2 rpg.
•This will be the second time APSU coach Dave Loos and Liberty head man Dale
Layer have coached against each other. The Governors won a 74-72 decision
against Colorado State in 2000-01 when Layer was the Rams’ coach.

game...they would end BracketBusters with a 4-6 record...it would be their first win against
Liberty...it would be their first win against a Big South school this season...it would even
their overall record to 3-3 against current Big South members...they would improve to
8-21...they would go 3-4 in February...it would be APSU’s third road victory this season...
it would make Dave Loos 1-0 all-time against Liberty...it would make Loos 2-0 against
Liberty coach Dale Layer...it would be Loos’ 453rd career victory.
WHAT A LOSS WOULD MEAN: It would be the Govs second straight loss...it would be
the Govs seventh loss in BracketBusters games...the Govs would fall to 0-3 against Big
South teams this season...the Govs would slip to 2-4 all-time against current Big South
members...APSU would drop to 7-22 overall this season...the Govs would fall to 2-12
on the road this season...it would be Dave Loos’ 332nd APSU loss and 385th all-time.

OVC CHANGES IN 2012-13
OVC begins Divisional Play in 2012-13
The OVC begins divisional play for men and women’s
basketball beginning with the 2012-13 season, with
APSU a part of the league’s new West Division.
The addition of Belmont, July 1, gave the OVC
12 member institutions, the largest Conference
membership since the league’s inception in 1948 (the OVC is currently the
nation’s eighth-oldest Division I conference). The West Division will include APSU,
Eastern Illinois, Murray State, Southeast Missouri, SIUE and UT Martin. The East
Division will include Belmont, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Morehead
State, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech.
The 2012-13 schedule features 16 games with each team playing divisional
foes twice during the season (home and away) and playing teams in the opposite
division once a season. When creating the schedule it was a priority to play
as many games as possible after January 1; the final schedules feature only a
handful of late December games.
Men’s games will continue to be played on Thursday and Saturday while the
women’s games will be played on Saturday and Monday for a second straight
season. The 2013-14 schedules will mirror these schedules, meaning if a team
played the 2012-13 game at a Conference opponent, that team will host that
same opponent in 2013-14.

GOVERNORS STATE: SIXTH OVC WEEKEND RECAP
What went right?
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Notorious for getting off to
slow starts this season, the
Governors got off to an 18-6
lead against Eastern Illinois
and 28-6 edge against SIU Edwardsville.
Austin Peay never trailed in
either road contest, not only
gaining early advantages but
maintaining them.
Bouncing back from a struggling previous weekend, senior
forward Anthony Campbell was
on fire returning to his home
state. He averaged 22.5 ppg
while connecting on 9-of-17
from three-point range. He was
4-of-4 from three in the second
half against Eastern Illinois. He
scored nine of the Govs’ 11-3
run to start the second half
Senior forward Anthony Campbell
versus SIUE.
With Chris Horton’s 20 rebounds leading the way, the Govs out-rebounded their
two opponents by a 38-26.5 margin. This is the same team that was out-rebounded by the opposition in the first nine OVC games this season.
Freshman center Chris Horton shot 80 percent (12 of 15) from the floor in two
games and blocked nine shots to become APSU’s single-season record holder
with 85, topping the 2003-04 mark of Josh Lewis.
Freshmen reserves Cory Arentsen and Preston Herring continued their development, combining for 23 points on 6-of-10 shooting and a trio of three pointers
between them.
APSU was able to win a game against EIU with the team’s leading (Travis Betran) and third leading (Will Triggs) scorers combining for 11 points.
What went wrong?
Little went wrong during the weekend.
The Govs committed 36 turnovers, 18 in each game.
Owning a 16-point lead with two minutes left against EIU, the Govs opened the
door by committing five turnovers in the next minute.
After permitting 18 points in the first half to Eastern Illinois, the Govs allowed 19
points in the final two minutes.
GOVERNORS DECREE
BRACKETBUSTER: For the eighth straight year and final year, all Ohio Valley Conference schools will participate in the Ramada Worldwide BracketBusters series. Six
schools will host games this season, with the other six on the road. APSU, which will
travel to Liberty, Saturday, has competed in the most BracketBusters games (nine).
GUARANTEE GAMES: In his 23rd season as head coach and 16th as athletics
director, Dave Loos and his basketball program annually have helped supplement
the APSU budget with “guarantee” games. In fact, with this season’s four games
(Western Kentucky, DePaul, Memphis, Illinois State), APSU has played 86 games for
direct guarantee money or as part of tournaments where at least one game has not
been at a neutral site.
NO PRESEASON ALL-OVC SELECTIONS: The preseason All-OVC team was an example of the Governors youth as it enters the 2012-13 season. The Governors failed
to have a preseason All-OVC selection for the first time since the 2006-07 season.
50TH OVC SEASON: Austin Peay began playing OVC basketball in the 1963-64
season, meaning 2012-13 is APSU’s 50th as a member. Austin Peay ended the 201112 season with an 8-8 OVC record, giving the Govs an overall OVC record of 396-348
(.532) during their near five decades as an OVC competitor. Before APSU head coach
Dave Loos took over in 1990-91, APSU owned a 165-207 OVC mark.
ABOUT THE 2012-13 GOVS
•Redshirt senior forward Anthony Campbell, whose
father Mark played both basketball and baseball
at Northeast Missouri (now Truman State), was
MVP for Edwardsville High School in a tournament
played at Lantz Gymnasium, home of OVC foe
Eastern Illinois.
• Redshirt sophomore guard Thomas Greer played
for his father, Mike, at West Carroll High School
where he was a Class A Mr. Basketball nominee.
His sister Addy, was a walk-on player at UT Martin
a year ago.
• Redshirt sophomore forward Joe Harms, a physics
major, spent this past summer working on building a fully-functioning desktop Nuclear Magnetic
Resonance (NMR) machine for university use. His
work was a subject of a feature on NBCsports.com.
• Junior center Matt Hasse’s grandfather, John
Kucer, played basketball at Toledo. Hasse’s family
owns a small island in Canada, where they travel
every summer to fish.
• Junior forward Will Triggs was a prep teammate
of forward Anthony Campbell as a sophomore. As
a prep senior, Triggs recorded double-doubles in
28 games.
• As a college freshman at Southern Miss, Jerome
Clyburn broke a the bone in his left foot during the
first practice. After missing the first nine games,
he returned to action and then broke the bone in
his right foot three games into his season. • Sophomore guard Herdie Lawrence played in the
backcourt alongside Saah Nimley at the same
Collins High School that produced former UConn
women’s star Maya Moore.
• Sophomore forward Chris Freeman played for his
uncle, former Kentucky star Reggie Warford, two
years ago at Muhlenberg County HS. His cousin,
Derick Warford played football with New England. Another cousin, Bob Lanier, is a former Detroit
Pistons star and is a member of NBA Hall of Fame.
• Junior guard Travis Betran, a Harlem, N.Y., native,
didn’t begin playing basketball until he was in fifth
grade, but became a regular at Rucker Park, the
most famous streetball court in the country.
• Freshman forward Preston Herring was a secondteam Alabama All-State selection as a 6-3 guard in
2009-10. A little more than a year later he earned
All-State honors as a 6-7 forward/center, growing
four inches in a little more than a year.
• Freshman center/forward Chris Horton was a member of three straight high school state championships at Columbia High School in Decatur, Ga.
Horton’s father. Eddie, played for Austin Peay back
in the mid-1970s.
• Freshman guard AJ Lynch was called the “most
underrated guard” in Alabama while playing at
Bount High School in Mobile.
• Freshman guard Cory Arentsen played his AAU
Basketball for the St. Louis Eagles, a program that
produced former Govs’ guard Colby Pierce and
center Zac Schlader.
• Walk-on junior guard Jeremy Purvis was a teammate of prep All-American Alex Poythress, now at
Kentucky, at Northeast High School.

FAMILIAR FACE RETURNS
Corey Gipson, who helped lead Austin Peay to
consecutive Ohio Valley Conference championships in
2002-03 and 2003-04 while going 27-0 in the Dunn
Center, has returned to his alma mater as assistant
basketball coach. Gipson joined the APSU coaching
staff in June following the resignation of Scott Combs.
Gipson, who has quickly elevated his coaching profile in
a short time since leaving APSU, spent the previous two
seasons as associate head coach at UNC Greensboro.
Gipson was named to the UNCG staff as an assistant
coach on June 20, 2009 and a year later was elevated
to the position as associate head coach.
Last spring, the Sikeston, Mo. native left UNC
Greensboro for Furman after a head-coaching change
was made at the North Carolina school. However, when
APSU head coach Dave Loos beckoned, the idea of
returning to his alma mater and closer to home was
just too appealing.
TV/ONLINE VIEWING
Fans can catch APSU men and women’s basketball

24.Anthony Campbell 2008- season-best six assists against SIUE. Clyburn
also grabbed a career-best eight rebounds.
WELCOME HOME: Returning to their
hometown of Edwardsville, Anthony Campbell
and Will Triggs combined for 35 points on 13
of 24 shooting, against SIUE and 13 rebounds.
SOUP’S ON: Coming off a single-digit performance against Belmont, Anthony Campbell just
needed to return to his home state to recapture
his scoring touch. The Edwardsville native’s 24
points against Eastern Illinois represented his
eighth 20-point outing this season and 14th
for his career. Campbell’s five three pointers
matched his career best—he also had five at
Illinois State.
PURVIS TIMING: Junior walk-on point guard
Jeremy Purvis, who had relinquished his starting
point guard position to senior Jerome Clyburn
three games ago, scored a career-best 11 points
against Eastern Illinois on a perfect shooting
night. He was 3-for-3 from the floor, including a
pair of three pointers, and he also was 3-for-3
at the free-throw line.
FINDING A WAY: APSU’s leading and third
leading scorers, Travis Betran (17.9 ppg) and
Will Triggs (12.2 ppg), who were averaging
more than 30 points per game entering the
contest, combined for just 11 points against
EIU. In fact, Betran’s five-point performance
stopped a streak of 13 straight double-figure
scoring performances.
RANGE FINDER: For the first time since
the Morehead State game, Jan. 9, the Govs
finished shooting better than 50 percent from
three-point range by going 9-of-17 against EIU.
LUCKY 13: When Chris Freeman scored 10
points against Belmont it snapped a streak of
13 straight games of single digits. He previously
had 15 points against Lipcomb, Dec. 18. BACK IN LINEUP: After playing in his first
game since Dec. 1, 2012, at Murray State,
senior point guard Jerome Clyburn made his
season’s first start, Feb. 7, against Tennessee
State. He missed the season’s first week-plus
after knee surgery. Then in his first game back
against DePaul, he suffered a hamstring injury,
later diagnosed as a tear. As a result, he missed
the next two months.
OVERTIME BLUES: The Govs have played
four overtime games in the past month and a
half–all in OVC play–and they have won just one
of the extra-session contests. The Govs most
recently lost a 75-68 decision at Murray State,
Feb. 2, and an 88-82 overtime home loss to
Tennessee State, Feb. 7.
PERCENTAGE DECREASE: After going 11
straight games shooting 50 percent or more
from the floor, Govs’ junior Will Triggs fell short
of that mark against Tennessee State. He ended
the night 8-of-20 from the floor (40 percent).
NO PASSING FANCY: The Govs’ six assists
against Tennessee Tech, Jan. 26, were a season
low. It was APSU’s fewest assists since having
just five against Tennessee State, Jan. 30, 2012.
WALK ON TO STARTER: With senior point

guard Jerome Clyburn out with a hamstring
injury and APSU’s other point guards struggling
with turnovers, APSU’s coaching staff turned
to a player in mid-December who joined the
practice sessions a little more than a week
earlier. Jeremy Purvis, who played at Clarksville’s Northeast High School before playing two
seasons at Jackson State Community College,
got the starting nod against Lipscomb. He
ended up playing 32 minutes. He started the
next 10 games at point guard.
ANOMALY: When Austin Peay shot 32 of 58
against Jacksonville State it was the second
straight game and the fifth time this season
the Governors had shot 50 percent or better
from the floor in a loss.
TRIO’S TAKE: In the second half against
Jacksonville State, forward Will Triggs, center
Chris Horton and guard Travis Betran accounted
for 19 of APSU’s 21 field goals, shooting a
combined 19 of 25 (76 percent).
GAME WINNER: When Travis Betran delivered the game-winning shot a split second prior
to the horn sounding, Jan. 9, it was APSU’s first
buzzer beater since Josh Terry beat Morehead
State, Dec. 12, 2010. 11 AND COUNTING: In the previous two
seasons, forward Anthony Campbell never got
to play in Game No. 11. After game No. 10 of
2010-11, he tore the ACL in his left knee during
practice. In 2011-12, Campbell tore the ACL in
the same knee in Game No. 10 against Arkansas State. He celebrated No. 11 this season
by scoring a career-high 25 points, including
a trio of three pointers against Lipscomb. But
he followed that up with three more 20-point
outings against Illinois State, which included
five three pointers; Utah Valley and High Point.
ALL-TOURNAMENT: After scoring 45 points
in two games, fifth-year senior Anthony Campbell earned Dr. Pepper Classic all-tourney honors. Against Utah Valley, he scored 22 points
on 8-of-16 shooting, including a trio of three
pointers, while also grabbing five rebounds. He
followed that up with a team-high 23 points
in the consolation contest against High Point.
Went 7-of-13 from the floor.
CAMPBELL REACHES MILESTONE: With a
pair of free throws in the second half against
Berea College, Nov. 28, senior forward Anthony
Campbell reached the career 1,000-point mark.
Seemingly a foregone conclusion when he had
739 points after two seasons, a twice-torn ACL
in his left knee limited Campbell to 10 games in
each of the previous two seasons. He became
the 32nd Gov to reach the milestone.
CORE EXERCISES: Freshman guard Cory
Arentsen scored a career-high 20 points against
Berea in his first-ever double-digit scoring effort. Arentsen’s six three-point field goals are
a team season-high and the most by a Gov
since Tyshwan Edmondson hit seven threes
at Tennessee State, Jan. 15, 2011.
A FOR ASSIST: Freshman guard AJ Lynch
was credited with a season-best nine assists

earned such honors largely based upon his eight
blocked shots in two games during the tourney. .
TORONTO TRIP: For the first time in program
history the Governors basketball team traveled
internationally in August for a three-game exhibition tour to Toronto, Canada. Basketball Travelers (BTI) sponsored the trip with the Governors
promise to play in a BTI-sponsored guarantee
game in the near future. The Governors went
2-1 in their exhibition tour.
INTERNATIONAL TRAVELERS: Not only did
the Govs play in an August exhibition trip to
Canada, they also needed passports to leave
the country to play the final two games of the
Triple Crown Cancun Challenge, Nov. 20-21.
APSU’s first two tourney games were at Western
Kentucky, Nov. 13, and then at DePaul, Nov.
17, before the scene shifted to Cancun and
the warmer climate for games against Western
Carolina and Gardner-Webb.
NEW COURT: Austin Peay is playing on a
brand new state-of-the-art playing surface. In
early June the old playing surface on Dave Loos
Court was removed. It took until mid-August for
the final phases of the project to be completed.
The new maple floor itself--an anchored resilient
wood system that has a rubberized base, helping protect athletes’ ankles and knees--comes
from Connor Sports Floor, which provided the
surfaces at both NCAA Final Fours in 2012.
IN HARMS WAY: Redshirt sophomore
forward Joe Harms, a physics major with a
goal of one day becoming a medical physicist,
used part of his summer working on building
a fully-functioning desktop Nuclear Magnetic
Resonance (NMR) machine for university use.
The 6-7 Harms played in six games in 2011-12.
LOCAL TRANSFER SITTING OUT: Zavion
Williams, a local product who starred at West
Creek High School, transferred to APSU from
Lipscomb at semester’s start and is sitting out
the season in accordance to NCAA transfer
rules. The 5-10 guard will have three seasons
of eligibility remaining beginning in 2013-14. Williams played in 26 games as a freshman at

Dave
Loos
Head Coach
23rd APSU Season, Memphis
Dave Loos is in his 23rd APSU season, the longest coaching tenure in APSU basketball history. The dean of Ohio Valley Conference coaches owns a 370-331 Govs record
and 452-384 overall mark in his 27th season. His 445 wins entering the season ranked
27th among all active Division I coaches. It also includes Loos’ 82-53 mark at Christian
Brothers (Memphis).
Loos’ 320th APSU win, Dec. 9, 2009, moved him past former Murray State and UT Martin
coach Cal Luther (319 wins) as the OVC’s all-time wins leader. In 2008-09, he moved past
legendary Western Kentucky coach E.A. Diddle into second place.
Loos also owns 234 OVC victories during his impressive tenure and is 82 games (234152) above .500 during his 23 seasons, even after an inauspicious 16-26 mark in the
first three seasons.
Under Loos, the Govs have had 13 winning seasons in the last 17 years, including the
2007-08 team’s 24-11 mark–tying for the most wins in school history. The Govs finished
last season at 20-14, their sixth 20-win season under Loos.
His 2006-07 OVC Coach of the Year honor was his fifth such honor. He is the only coach
in APSU history to earn more than one OVC “Coach of the Year” honor and is the only coach
in OVC history to win five such honors. He also was named the 2002-03 Tennessee Sports
Writers Association “Coach of the Year.”
When the Governors played at Tennessee State, Jan. 30, 2012, it was Loos’ 800th
game as a college head coach.
He has coached such notables as Charles “Bubba” Wells, APSU’s all-time scoring
leader and former NBA player who now is a Governors assistant, and Trenton Hassell, who
has played nine NBA seasons, most recently with the New Jersey Nets. Loos, in fact, has
coached Austin Peay’s top three career scoring leaders–Wells, guard Nick Stapleton and
forward Drake Reed, the three-time first-team All-OVC player who now is playing in Austria
Loos also is APSU’s athletic director. In his 15th year in the dual athletics directorbasketball coach role, Loos also has the OVC’s longest tenure as athletic director.

LOOS-LEAF NOTEBOOK
MEMBER OF FOUR HALLS OF FAME: APSU
head coach Dave Loos was inducted into the
Austin Peay Athletics Hall of Fame, Feb. 16,
2008. It was the fourth athletics-related Hall of
Fame to honor him. In Spring 1997, Loos was
inducted into the St. Louis Amateur Baseball
Hall of Fame; Loos was a former prep and
amateur baseball star in Missouri during the
1960s and later coached American Legion
baseball in the city. A former two-sport star
(baseball and basketball) in college, he was
inducted into the Memphis (M-Club) Athletic
Hall of Fame in Fall 2002. In June 2007, Loos
was inducted into the Missouri Basketball
Coaches Hall of Fame.
RECORD SURPASSED: APSU head coach
Dave Loos, who surpassed the career Austin
Peay wins mark in 2007, now owns the record
for wins coaching in the OVC. Loos now has
351 wins. In 2008-09, Loos became only the
second coach in league history to accumulate 300 wins as an OVC coach. He entered
2009-10 with 314 wins, needing six victories
to surpass Cal Luther, who recorded 319 wins
while coaching at both Murray State (1958-74)
and UT Martin (1992-99). Loos surpassed
the mark, Dec. 9, at Ohio. Loos also owns the
record for wins while at a single league school.
LOOS TENURE ENDS AS NCAA COMMITTEE
MEMBER: In December, 2008, Dave Loos
was appointed to the NCAA Division I Men’s
Basketball Issues Committee. His appointment ended Sept. 1, 2012. The NCAA Division I
Men’s Basketball Issues Committee is charged
with oversight of all issues pertaining to NCAA
Division I men’s basketball. The committee
works closely with the National Association
of Basketball Coaches (NABC) on legislation
and other issues, as well as the National
Basketball Association and USA Basketball.
The committee’s primary duties are to ensure
the appropriate oversight of the sport, with
an emphasis on recruiting activities and to
enhance the development and public perception of the sport. The committee also makes
policy recommendations per topics unrelated
to legislative and playing rules issues.
Dave Loos became the program’s all-time winningest coach in Winter 2007, surpassing the
legendary Dave Aaron (258 wins, 1946-62). As a result of his accomplishment, outgoing
president, Dr. Sherry Hoppe, at the behest of several boosters, had the playing floor named
Dave Loos Court.
DEAN OF OVC HEAD COACHES AND ATHLETICS DIRECTORS: Dave Loos remains as the
only Division I head basketball coach who also
serves as his respective school’s top athletic
administrator, athletics director. Loos has
helped APSU thrive as both its head basketball coach and the Athletics Director. In fact,
it is nearly unheard of in the world of NCAA
Loos Career
Coaching Milestones
athletics an athletics director also coaching,
especially a sport as prominent as men’s
basketball. What is remarkable is Loos, who is
the dean of Ohio Valley Conference basketball
coaches, also is the longest-serving athletics
director at his university–he currently is in his
14th year. He was at the forefront of APSU
return to scholarship football just five years
ago after spending more than a decade in
non-scholarship status. Yet, perhaps one of his
greatest sources of pride as Athletics Director
came in both 2002-03 and 2008-09 when
APSU’s Athletic Department was awarded the
OVC Academic Achievement Banner as the
league’s top academic program.
