Hamilton Zoo – University of Waikato Science and Engineering Scholarship B A C K GR O UN D The Hamilton Zoo and the Faculty of Science and Engineering at the University of Waikato recognise that they have mutual interests in educating students and the wider community about the operation and the role of zoos. The purpose of this Scholarship is to provide an opportunity for students of the Bachelor of Science (Technology) degree to gain practical experience and to undertake research relevant to the student’s degree requirements at the Hamilton Zoo. 1. 0 GE N ER A L 1.1 The Scholarship will be known as the Hamilton Zoo University of Waikato Science and Engineering Scholarship. 1.2. The Scholarship will consist of a cash award of $13,500 paid in instalments and a year-long placement with the Hamilton Zoo where the recipients will undertake research project work relevant to the BSc (Technology). 1.2 Up to two scholarships will be awarded annually. 1.3 The tenure of the Scholarship is 12 months (November to November). 2. 0 EL I G IB I LI TY 2.1 The Scholarship will be awarded to full-time enrolled undergraduate students of the University of Waikato who have completed the second year of the BSc (Technology) degree. 2.2 Scholarships are awarded on the merit of previous and current academic study in relevant subjects, a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in the field of animal behaviour management (or similar), and suitable practical skills to fulfil the placement requirements 1 . 3. 0 A PP L IC A T IO N 3.1 Along with the prescribed application form, each applicant must submit: a) A one page statement which outlines their interest in animal behaviour management, career aspirations in this field, and the practical skills they can bring to the placement; b) A CV of no more than three pages in length, c) The names and contact details of an academic referee and a character referee. 3.2 1 Applications close 5pm on 4 September. Hamilton Zoo – University of Waikato Science and Engineering Scholarship 4. 0 SE L EC T I ON 4.1 Applications will be short listed by the Placement Coordinator for Biological Sciences and the Director of Co-operative Education (or nominee). Shortlisting will be based on the eligibility criterial (refer to clause 2.1 and 2.2). 4.2 Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend an interview with the Hamilton Zoo. 4.3 The Selection Panel will comprise of up to two representatives of the Hamilton Zoo, the Director of Cooperative Education (or nominee), and an academic staff member in the field of Animal Behaviour (as nominated by the Head of School of Science). 4.4 The Selection Panel’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into following the selection meeting. 4.5 The Selection Panel is not obliged to make an award if in any year there are no applicants of sufficient merit. 5. 0 A WA R D , R E TE N TI O N , A ND PA Y M E NT O F TH E SC HO L A R S HI P 5.1 Successful applicants will be advised of the offer of a scholarship in writing and must advise the University’s Scholarships Office of their acceptance of the offer by the prescribed date. 5.2 The Scholarship must be taken up in the year in which it is awarded. 5.3 Recipients are required to enrol in three of the four following placement papers (SCIE371, SCIE372, SCIE373, or SCIE374). Recipients will not receive their first scholarship instalment until their enrolment in the first placement paper has been confirmed. 5.4 Recipients will design and carry out a project to be conducted during the placement, which should be of mutual interest and value to the candidate as well as to the Hamilton Zoo. The project and work undertaken will form the basis of reports that will be written by the student about their experience, to satisfy the requirements of the placement papers. Details of the length of the reports and the submission dates will be provided by the recipient’s University Supervisor as will other details relating to the placement. 5.5 The Scholarship will be paid out in equal monthly instalments over the period of the placement. Continued payments will be subject to fulltime enrolment in the relevant papers and ongoing satisfactory performance2. The final instalment is a condition on successful completion of the final technical report. A ‘satisfactory level of performance’ will be determined by the University’s Co-operative Education Unit in consultation with the student’s supervisor and the Hamilton Zoo. 2 Hamilton Zoo – University of Waikato Science and Engineering Scholarship 7. 0 C O ND IT I ON S 7.1 The Scholarship may be held in conjunction with any other bursary, scholarship or award, unless the conditions of the other award preclude this. 7.2 The University may terminate the Scholarship at any time and recoup funds disbursed if it is not satisfied that the holder is following the required programme or is not otherwise complying with the conditions governing the Scholarship and/or the regulations of the University of Waikato. The holder of an Award shall have the right to appeal to the Academic Board against any decision to terminate an Award. 7.3 By accepting a Scholarship, the recipient agrees to participate in any publicity concerning the Scholarship arranged by the University of Waikato and the Hamilton Zoo. 7.4 With the consent of Hamilton Zoo, the University may from time to time vary these regulations.
