Edna Money Scholarship for Pacific Academic Excellence
REGULATIONS
BACKGROUND
The Edna Money Scholarship for Pacific Academic Excellence was established in 2014 to recognise
exceptional academic endeavour and achievement of Pacific students at the University of Waikato.
Edna Money was a Morrinsville farmer and accountant who bequeathed money to the University of Waikato
in 2013 to benefit Pacific students. The Edna Money Scholarship for Pacific Academic Excellence is one of
three Edna Money scholarships for Pacific students studying at the University.
The purpose of the Edna Money Scholarship for Pacific Academic Excellence is to recognise and provide
support for students who excel academically in a programme of study at the University of Waikato and to
encourage students to strive for academic excellence. The Scholarship will be applied to tuition fees.
1.0
GENERAL
1.1.
The award shall be known as the Edna Money Scholarship for Pacific Academic Excellence.
1.2.
The award will have a value of up to $3000 and will be applied as a tuition fee credit, following
confirmation of the recipient’s full-time enrolment in the semester following the awarding of the
Scholarship.
2.0
ELIGIBILITY
2.1
Applicants must be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident and of Pacific Island descent.
2.2.
Applicants must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate qualification at the University of Waikato in
the year of tenure and must have been enrolled in full-time undergraduate study at the University of
Waikato in the year preceding the award.
2.3
Academic Excellence Scholarships will be awarded for academic merit, with a minimum grade point
average (GPA) of A– expected for eligibility.

APPLICATION
Applications for the Scholarship must be received by the University of Waikato Scholarships Office
on the prescribed online form by 31 March 2015.

3.2
All applications must include:
(a) A personal statement (maximum one page) that sets out the following:
(i)
academic achievements (tertiary level);
(ii) the attributes and strategies that have assisted with the applicant’s current academic
success.
(b) An academic reference attesting to the applicant’s potential for continued academic excellence.
The reference must be from an academic staff member from the applicant’s Faculty or
programme of study.

SELECTION
The awarding of the Scholarships will be made by a Selection Panel comprising:

the Chair of the Scholarships Committee (or nominee) who will be Chair;

the SASD Pacific Student Support Coordinator;

an academic staff member appointed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor; and

the University’s Senior Policy Advisor – Pacific.
The Selection Panel will consider the applications and may contact the referee on a confidential basis
for further relevant information.
4.3
The Selection Panel’s decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into following the
selection meeting.
5.0
5.1.
AWARD & RETENTION
Successful applicants will be advised of the offer of a Scholarship in writing and must advise the
University’s Scholarships Office of their acceptance of the offer by the prescribed date. If the
candidate fails to accept the Scholarship within the specified time, the offer will lapse.
5.2.
The Scholarships Committee may terminate a Scholarship at any time if it is not satisfied that the
holder is following the approved programme of study or is not otherwise complying with the conditions
governing the Scholarship or the University of Waikato. The holder of a Scholarship shall have the
right to appeal to the Research Committee against any decision to terminate the Scholarship.

6.1
CONDITIONS
An Edna Money Scholarship for Pacific Academic Excellence may not be held in conjunction with
other Edna Money Scholarships.

6.2
An Edna Money Scholarship for Pacific Academic Excellence may be held in conjunction with any
other scholarship or award, unless the conditions of the other award preclude this.
6.3
In signing and returning the Scholarship acceptance form, the student will be deemed to have read,
understood and accepted the conditions for the award and retention of the Scholarship.
6.4
By accepting a Scholarship, the recipient agrees to participate in any publicity concerning the
Scholarship as arranged by the University of Waikato.
