Brian Smith Memorial 499/599 Scholarship R 1. E G U L A T I O N S Purpose 1.1. The Brian Smith Memorial 499/599 Scholarship supports students researching business situations as part of their Report of an Investigation (499 or 599) paper. 2. Eligibility 2.1. To be eligible, applicants must be enrolled, or intending to enrol, in their 499 or 599 Report of an Investigation in the current year in the Waikato Management School. 2.1.1. Applicants who have not yet completed their final report and are enrolled at the Scholarship application closing date are still eligible to apply. 2.1.1.1. Completion of the report is defined as the final report having been submitted to their Supervisor for review. 2.1.2. Applicants who submit their final report to their Supervisor for review before the Scholarship closing date are ineligible, so should not apply. 3. Value 3.1. Each Scholarship will have a value of $1,500. 3.2. Up to two awards will be made annually. 4. Application 4.1. The closing dates for applications are 31 March and 31 August. 4.2. As part of the online application process, each applicant must: Complete and upload the prescribed Personal Statement form that includes (but is not limited to) the following subheadings: o Name of sponsor o Outline of 499/599 project o Academic merit, and personal character and qualities. Upload a CV of no more than four pages in length 5. Selection Criteria 5.1. The Scholarship will be offered on the basis of academic merit, and personal character and qualities. 5.1.1. Academic merit will be assessed primarily on the last two years’ full-time study, or equivalent. 5.2. Preference may be given to those applicants who have not previously been awarded a Brian Smith Memorial 499/599 Scholarship. Brian Smith Memorial 499/599 Scholarship 6. Selection Panel 6.1. The Selection Panel will comprise the Waikato Management School’s Associate Dean (Academic), a Department Chairperson (nominated by the Associate Dean (Academic)), and the Faculty’s representative on the Scholarship Committee (or nominees). 6.2. The Selection Panel may refrain from making a recommendation if it finds no candidate of sufficient merit. 6.3. All applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application. 6.4. The Selection Panel’s decision is final and no further correspondence will be entered into following the selection meeting. 7. Awarding 7.1. The successful applicant will be offered the Scholarship on condition that they enrol in or are enrolled in the 499 or 599 Report of an Investigation and have not completed their report on the closing date for this Scholarship (see regulation 2.1.1.1.). 7.2. A successful applicant must advise the University’s Scholarships Office of their acceptance by the date prescribed in the offer documents. 7.2.1. If any applicant declines a Scholarship or does not take it up, the Selection Panel, may offer the Scholarship to another person. 7.3. The Scholarship will have a maximum tenure of one year and must be taken up in the year for which it is offered. 8. Other Conditions 8.1. The Scholarships Committee may terminate a Scholarship at any time and recoup any funds awarded, if it is not satisfied that the recipient is following the required programme or is not otherwise complying with the conditions governing the Scholarship and/or the regulations of the University of Waikato. 8.1.1. The holder of a Scholarship shall have the right to appeal to either the Education or Research Committee against any decision to terminate an award. 8.2. The University may, from time to time, vary these regulations. 8.3. By accepting a Scholarship, a recipient agrees to participate in any publicity concerning the Scholarship arranged/requested by the University of Waikato.
