BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT OR-030-2013-08 Date: 1/30/2013 Contact: Mark Wilkening (541) 473-6218 BLM Seeks Nominations to Resource Advisory Council VALE, ORE.-The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Vale District is seeking nominations for seven open positions on the John Day-Snake Resource Advisory Council (RAC). The RACs advise the BLM and the U.S. Forest Service on public lands issues. The BLM will accept nominations until March 14, 2013. The RACs, composed of citizens chosen for their expertise in natural resources issues, help the BLM carry out its stewardship of 245 million acres of public lands. The BLM, which manages more land than any other Federal agency, has 29 RACs across the West, where most BLMmanaged land is located. Each RAC consists of 15 members with an interest in public land management, including conservationists, ranchers, outdoor recreationists, state and local government officials, tribal officials, and academics. The diverse RAC membership is aimed at achieving a balanced outlook that Federal land managers need for their mission, which is to manage the public lands for multiple uses. “I value the advice given to the BLM by resource advisory council members,” said Vale District Manager Don Gonzalez. “The people who live, work and recreate near or on BLM-managed lands provide the managers with valuable advice, and their input enhances the District’s ability to manage the public lands for multiple uses while conserving resources for future generations” continued Gonzales. Individuals may nominate themselves or others to serve on an advisory council. Nominees must reside in the state where the RAC has jurisdiction and will be judged on the basis of their training, education and knowledge of the council’s geographic area. Nominees should also demonstrate a commitment to consensus-building and collaborative decision-making. Each nomination packet must include a completed background information nomination form and any other information that speaks to the nominee’s qualifications. The seven positions open on the John Day-Snake RAC are in the following categories: Category One - Public land ranchers and representatives of organizations associated with energy and mineral development, the timber industry, transportation or rights-ofway, off-highway vehicle use, and commercial recreation. -More- Category Two - Representatives of nationally recognized or regionally recognized environmental organizations, archaeological and historical organizations, dispersed recreation activities, and wild horse and burro organizations. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. -BLM- 2012 Oregon / Washington Resource Advisory Councils and Oregon BLM Resource Advisory Committees 124° 122° 120° 118° W H AT C O M PEND OREILLE O K A N O G A N SAN JUAN F E R RY S K A G I T A ISL ND C L A L L A M 48° STEVENS Eastern 48° S N O H O M I S H C H E L A N Washington J E F F E R S O N TS KI D O U G L A S AP K G R AY S M A S O N H A R B O R OCEAN N G RAC L E W WA S H I N G T O N P I E R C E I W H I T M A N A D A M GARFIELD COLUMBIA Y A K I M A C OW L I T Z COLUMBIA ASOTIN WA L L A WA L L A B E N TO N SKAMANIA 46° S FRANKLIN S WHAKIAKUM C L AT S O P SPOKANE L I N C O L N G R A N T K I T T I T A S THURSTON PA C I F I C I 46° K L I C K I T A T CLARK U M A T I L L A N TI CLACKAMAS YAMHILL M O R ROW SHE LL AM WASHINGTON RMA OO K W A L L O W A HOOD RIVER MULTNOMAH GILLIAM John Day - Snake RAC U PA C I F I C WA S C O POLK I O N MARION J E F F E R S O N WHEELER LINCOLN B A K E R L I N N G R A N T BENTON OREGON 44° L N A N 44° CROOK E D E S C H U T E S H COOS JOSEPHINE JACKSON R N E M A L H E U R Y Southeast Oregon RAC DOUGLAS L CURRY A A K Steens Mountain E K L A M A T H 42° 42° 124° No warranty is made by the Bureau of Land Management as to the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of these data for individual or aggregate use with other data.
