1 00 Oregon Street Restoring BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT OR-038-2012-08 For release: Immediate Release Contact: Mark Wilkening (541) 473-6218 BLM Prepares Post-Fire Rehabilitation Plans VALE, OR- In the wake of multiple and extensive wildfires, th e Bmeau of Land Management Vale District has begun planning for emergency stabilization an d rehabilitation. Ten fires bmned more than 797,000 acres across southeast Oregon this season, the majority between Jordan Valley, Oregon, an d McDennitt, Nevada. Treatments will provide for rehabilitation of Greater Sage-Grouse an d Lahontan cutthroat u·out habitat, with a focus on sagebmsh restoration and riparian recove1y. Treatments will include ground and aerial seed application of grass, forb and slnub species as well as fence repair, erosion control stluctm es, and noxious weed u·eatlnents. Temporruy protective fences will be constm cted to ensme recove1y of native vegetation as well as protect the public land user's investment in seeding treatments. Seeding treatments will use a mix of native and non-native grasses, and slnub species will include sagebmsh an d bitterbmsh. Noxious weeds will be managed by both mechanical and chemical methods. Seeding will be completed by u·actor drill seeding, aerial seed disu·ibution, and seed incorporation with chaining. Seeding an d erosion conu·ol u·eatments will begin this fall and continue into winter, weather pennitting, while other u·eatments will take place over the next two to three years. "Post-fire erosion is a concem " says Jordan-Malhuer Field Man ager Pat Ryan. "We look f01wru·d to working with the community and om sister agencies in restoring the lan dscape." The BLM Vale Disu·ict will work with local landowners and cooperators, in addition to various local, state, and federal agencies, in designing and implementing stabilization and rehabilitation treatments.
