Salem, Ore.— Spring is here and camping season is just around the corner! The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) recreation sites in northwest Oregon will open in early May. From Newport to Welches, the BLM Salem District continues to expand and improve its recreation offerings. In 2013, more than one million people visited BLM lands in northwest Oregon. BLM Salem offers more than 180 developed campsites, 13 group overnight and day use sites, seven developed day use areas and 100 miles of motorized and non-motorized trails. Some developed BLM recreation facilities charge fees for day or overnight use. A few highlights of BLM’s northwest Oregon recreation opportunities include: Fishermen's Bend Recreation Site: Longtime favorite of Willamette Valley residents, this campground and boat launch on the North Santiam River features a range of overnight accommodations. Take advantage of advanced reservations at Recreation.gov. Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area: A premier interpretive center and historic landmark on the Oregon Coast, featuring tide pools, the state's tallest lighthouse and some of the best marine wildlife viewing opportunities. Ranger-led lighthouse tours are available. Alsea Falls Recreation Site: A scenic and secluded day use area and campground on the South Fork Alsea River offers 16 campsites, great picnic opportunities with a walking trail along the scenic Alsea Falls. Enjoy a less hurried and enjoyable route from the Willamette Valley to the coast along the Alsea Back Country Byway. A new and improved trail system for mountain biking and hiking is in development and will be open by late June. Sandy Ridge Trail System: Sixteen miles of trails designed and constructed for mountain biking. Look for new, enhanced beginner-friendly options in 2014. Sandy Ridge is located near the base of Mount Hood, one mile west of Brightwood. The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s mission is to manage and conserve the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations under our mandate of multiple-use and sustained yield. In Fiscal Year 2013, the BLM generated $4.7 billion in receipts from public lands. ###
