Closure on Douglas Complex Fire Area Re-Opened
Roseburg, Ore. –The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) temporary emergency closure of public
lands in Douglas County and Josephine County, will end September 30, 2013. A portion of the
Cow Creek Byway road will remain closed to through traffic until March 31, 2014.
The Cow Creek Road will be closed from Middle Creek to Union Creek due to hazards from falling
rocks and destabilized soils. The section of the road that will remain closed is indicated on the
attached map.
“While this area is being reopened, there will continue to be many hazards within the fire perimeter
from destabilized soils, falling rocks and trees throughout the winter,” said Steve Lydick, South
River Field Manager. “The public should use extreme caution when entering any area of the burn.”
The BLM is continuing to work with the public to address resource and safety needs within the
Douglas Complex fire perimeter.
The Douglas Complex of fires was started by lightning on July 26, 2013, seven miles north of Glendale,
Oregon.

###
The BLM manages more land – more than 245 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of
Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700
million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of
the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as
outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other
resources on public lands.
