BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT For release: September 15, 2010 Contact: Nick Schade (541) 618-2281 Rewilding the Wilderness: Event Scheduled in Celebration of National Public Lands Day Medford, Ore. – The Bureau of Land Management’s Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is hosting National Public Lands Day on Saturday, September 25, 2010. In honor of the recent designation of the Soda Mountain Wilderness, this year’s theme will is “Rewilding the Wilderness.” It will also celebrate the 10th anniversaries of the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument and the National Landscape Conservation System. The project will take place at Pilot Rock and will involve removing fencing and other range infrastructure. The volunteers will meet at the Pilot Rock Trailhead parking area. The road accessing Pilot Rock Trail head is rough and rocky. High clearance vehicles are recommended. For directions to the trailhead, please contact Nick Schade at (541) 618-2281. Sign up will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the fence removal effort will begin at 9:30 a.m. and last till approximately 2:00 p.m. Volunteers are asked to wear sturdy close-toed shoes, bring leather gloves, hats, and sunscreen, and a refillable water bottle. The work day will conclude with a picnic at historic Buckhorn Springs and an opportunity to mingle, meet new friends, and explore the historic Buckhorn Springs Lodge and grounds. Beverages and food will be provided by the BLM. The Cascade Siskiyou National Monument is a unit of the National Landscape Conservation System which encompasses more than 27 million acres and includes 886 federally recognized areas.
