Students have the opportunity to perform research for course credit under the direct supervision of Departmental faculty. The students learn research techniques as they work with the faculty. Each year our undergraduate students present their research findings at regional and national scientific meetings and some publish them in professional journals. Please consider the Biology Major as your academic choice at Troy. Students are attracted to the Major by its flexibility, such as the choice of 38 different minors. The Biology Major balances flexibility with academic rigor by encouraging students to take those courses and minors that best prepare them for their future careers. Students select upper level courses in three areas: 1) Botany and Zoology, 2) Ecology and Field Biology, and 3) Physiology and Molecular Biology. The three areas expose students to several different biological specialities to help them identify their interests and in turn decide on a productive career Overview of the Major During the freshman and sophomore years, students complete General Studies requirements in English, mathematics, and computer sciences. They also complete their foundation courses, such as Principles of Biology and Organismal Biology, Chemistry I & II, General Ecology, Genetics, and Organic Chemistry I & II, which prepare them for advanced courses. Students complete Physics I & II, their upper level biology classes, and courses for their minor during their junior and senior years. Minors Students enrolled in the Biology Major must choose a minor. The choice of a Minor allows students to strengthen their backgrounds or pursue areas of interest. A minor varies between 18-20 credit hours, depending on the minor and the choice of courses. At present, Troy offers about 38 different minors, ranging from art to math to Spanish— enough to meet the needs and interests of every student! Many career opportunities are now available to you. After graduation, our students have chosen three different career paths. First, some of our students enjoy careers at research laboratories, both public and private, in industry, and with state and local governments. Second, many students opt for a graduate degree, which opens up even more career paths. Many graduate schools offer assistantships to help defray the costs of a graduate education. Third, some students enter professional schools (medical, dental, pharmacy, veterinary, etc.). Departmental Clubs Students are encouraged to join one or more of the Department’s three clubs. Beta Beta Beta (the national honor society for the biological sciences), the Environmental Club, and Alpha Epsilon Delta (the health professions honor society). Revised: October 31, 2008
